Looking to upgrade my 9Z and I'd like to knwow what do you guys think if someone already has some experience with any of this 2 Radios.

Before the 12FG came out I was into the 12Z but now I dont know it looks like the 12FG might have some fewer options and also chaper.

I noticed on the FG it doesnt have the joistick but a button only so which one would be better if it was for the looks I would go for the 12z but I was wondering about what does the 12FG doesnt have compared to the 12Z ?

any one????

I had flown the 9Z since they were first introduced. Now I have a 12Z and love it. I like the feel and the programming is really easy compared to the 9Z. I don't think you would be disappointed wth the 12Z .

A friend just bought one also that had a 9Z and he was sold when I showed him how easy it was to setup and adjust the program for a new setup. He just sold his 9Z. Another happy modeler.

So it does feel better than the 9Z by holding it??? I love my 9Z and I have hold a 14mz and it felt kind of wired kind of too big hard to reach the sticks.

The 12Z is not large like the 14MZ. It is much lighter then the 9Z, but not to light.

In my opinion, yes. I think you would be very happy with the 12z without a doubt.

I have a 12z but have also used (programmed and set up) a 12FG. The 12z is a much better radio in my opinion. It has more complete features although the 12 FG has all the necessary features too. More importantly, the 12Z is much easier to program than the 12FG.

Your statement about the 12Z being easier to program is erroneous. I have read both the 12Z and the 12FG manuals and they are virtually identical! The primary difference between the two is mainly mechanical in the case, rotatable sticks, battery and movable switches.

Yes, I have a 12FG and have also played around with a 12Z . I bought the 12FG based on what I found to be basically identical programs. I also had an early 9Z and that radio sucked as far as ease of programming was concerned.

I have to agree with you on how hard is to program or to get arround on the 9z,,I still like it a lot but it's kind of hard.
which one did you get the 2.4ghz or 72mhz,,and how do you like it so far???

I got the 72 mhz. I am not ready to be a beta tester for a new freq. band! When I see for a work for a while(like a year or two), I will consider it then. I have no problems on 72 mhz and haven't for the last 35 years.

I have recently programmed a full house competition sailplane which is one thing most radios on the market have no good features for. I have to admit it did it with ease and it seems to have all the functions my Airtronics Stylus has and that is THE sailplane radio.

I am still coming to grips with it's method of programming. Although easy, it's different than what I have been use to. Just a matter of time.

The ergonomics of the radio are great.

I am a little peeved they didn't use a standard AA 6-cell battery pack. They use an odd size cell to make you have to buy there batteries. I checked and two li-ion cells will fit in the battery area. The radio is obviously designed around there voltage.

Charua, I own both a 9c and 9z and still I got another radio! I chose the 12z after looking at the 2 manuals and realizing that it is the easier of the two to program (menus are virtually the same but the Z is more graphically based), multi-engine mode and other little items. That chart futaba has is useful but leaves one wanting for more info. I'm sure you'll be happy with either, the major functions are the same, but here is a list of some differences that I noticed in quickly comparing manuals. You'll probably have to refer to the manuals to fill in the details of this list.

Mechanical Differences
-FG Side Slide Levers can be operated from front or back of transmitter possibly the side. 12Z 's have mechanical center detents here the 9Z did not, not sure if this is true of the FG
-FG is lacking a third center knob on the front. This knob on the Z also works as a momentary push switch.
-FG has 2 monitor LEDs, Z has one multicolor one.
-FG has 2 additional digital trim levers.
-FG has 1 button and dial/button control for programming operations, Z has 2 buttons, dial/button, and joystick.
-FG has a 3 position switch at the SG position while the Z has a 2 position one.
-Z switches can be changed.
-FG uses off the shelf SD cards, while Futaba recommends the use of their CF cards in the Z.
-FG uses Nimh battery, Z a Li-ion.
-FG uses one charger for TX/RX, TX battery does not need to be removed. Z comes with a separate TX charger, battery needs to be removed.
-Aluminum case, DSC cable, and charge/DSC cord for switch harness, provided with the Z.
-Z has higher resolution LCD(?).
-Z has polyphonic sounds/alarms, FG has ?.

Software
-FG requires special cable to buddy box with another FG, cannot be used with T6X, T7U, T8U and T9Z.
-FG can store 32 models in internal memory, the Z 25. FG can store more with optional SD card (according to Futaba recommendations).
-FG user name can use partial Japanese character set.
-Some Z sound volumes can be adjusted.
-Z can be password protected.
-Z can be set for autopower off.
-Z menus more graphically based.
-FG has a SWASH RING mode.
-Z timers have a split function.
-Z has a Dial Monitor Menu.
-Z D/R names can be changed.
-Programable and other mixes on the Z have an offset setting also.
-Z has a second servo speed setting for program mixing.
-Z has additional curves, ie LINEAR,EXP1,EXP2,VTR,LINE and SPLINE as opposed to the FG's LINEAR,EXP1,EXP2 and POINT
-Z has additional switch mode Symmetrical Box.

Good luck!

I'm nuts making such a list no?

I'll add that the 12z felt slightly weird since it is slightly lighter and thinner but very quickly grew on me. LCD is much easier to read than the 9z, and easier to program as well. So far I like it.

Here's a link to a heli page, but has a lot more useful info than anything else I've found, recommendations on aftermarket CF cards, calibration mode for the 12z etc.

12Z can be used with the MPXD-1 decoder for an extra 7 channels (lose one, gain 8, net = 7).
The FG can't use it.

12Z also have a Swash-Ring mode, but you have to upgrade to the new software. It also now says 12+2 channels during startup. Whatever that means.

Is the 12FG 2.4ghz only? I understand that with the 12z one can get a 2.4ghz module later on if one wishes to do so. That way one does not lose all the older PCM modules one has.

It means you just got 14 channels like the 14MZ! Congrats!
