Finally I get to see a 100+ mph run by an R/C car. And I managed to catch it on tape as well The weather kept the attendence down. Long drive from Dallas to San Antonio to get rained out. It threatened all day and finally right after the 1st round was finished the downpour came. I managed to get soaked collecting up all my equipment so I headed home. The diehards were still there waiting out the rain when I pulled out of the lot. It always rains on the Labor Day race seems like. Anyways the highlight of the day was the first 100+ mph run in Texas by anyone driving an R/C car. A brushless Lipo powered rail did the 132ft 1:10 scale strip in 1.33 seconds and change at 100.2 mph. Check it out in the video.

Be sure and get up there next month for the World Finals. I still remember topping the hill the first day I went last year and seeing all those people around the track. Its a memorable occasion to go to something like that. Check it out you'll be glad you did.

What length is the shut down area at that track?

Not sure I think its 150 ft. Seems awful short sometimes. I've broken up a few cars there. The old track at the K-Mart had pretty much unlimited run off. You just let off the throttle and let it coast to a stop. Used to see really high mph numbers there because people weren't afraid to run it through the back door. Most people wouldn't let off until way after the final beam. But the K-Mart closed down and the new owner wouldn't let us continue to race despite having run there for 10 years or so without incident. This track won't go away though You get used to the shut down and for a big race like the World Finals they put on so much LC-6 that you can get them stopped. There are small bumps right where you get on the brakes and you have to remember where they are. Hit the brakes a bit too fast right before one of those and the rear end ends up in the air and by the time its back on the ground you are in the catch net. When its time for the Worlds we just put more blankets in front of the net as we know people aren't going to worry abut getting stopped. Very little damage if any from piling into the blankets and catch net. There is a tank outlet just off the left side of the top end of the track that kept us from making it any longer. That is the side you gotta stay away from if you are going in too hot. About 6 inches of concrete await those who stray. You only have to bump it about 6 inches to the right but you better do it The worst wreck I've had at the track was to hit the net bounce up over that and bounce off that building then auger into the ground. Wish I had that one on tape. Parts were flying off going everywhere. I never did find the wheelie bar off the car. The body was undamaged due to it being mounted with velcro as it floated off after the net hit. The chassis was broken in half in 3 places. Had to buy a new bottom chassis plate and one steering spindle to fix it. I augered my top fuel car into the concrete one afternoon as well. Pretty much disintegrated the front of the car and the chassis whipped so hard it bent the rear plate. It went through the traps at 72mph if I remember correctly but snapped a belt so I had no brakes and I didn't manage to get it pulled far enough to the right to avoid the concrete.

Hey Gary,

It's in the range of 120-130ft shutdown. The Litespeed Raceway track crew uses VP Racing Fuels LC6/LC5 (depending on the season) full length - including shutdown. The extra traction in the shutdown run helps negate the shutdown length. Litespeed also uses safety boards full length. That helps 'funnel' cars to the blanket/safety catch net.

Gary,

Mr. Speed came on line at the MHRA website and corrected our "estimate". We came in a little short. Correct shutdown distance is 138ft., as provided by the track owner and chief of maintenance, Mr. Speed hisself. Now we know too. Thanks, Bill. Gary, hope this gets you the factual data you need. Regret any confusion this may have caused.
