Thanks Rick, as I type this note, the full scale plans for Jim Kirkland's A6-Intruder are open on the hotel bed next to me. God bless the USPS , faster service than I ever expected.

Sorry Jon, I've never flown a nutcracker. I'm just getting back into the hobby the past three years most of my planes have been high wing models. I'm just being nostalgic for the planes I remember seeing at the field as a kid or in the magazines.

Once you start studying the full size prints of the A6 Intruder, it isn't a difficult plane to build. The crib method that Jim Kirkland uses to build the wing is a bit unconventional, but the rest of the design is quite easy. Not that wings haven't been built on a crib to allow of for the diahedral, but to lay the bottom skins on crib first. The fuselage is just some additional carving. I also picked up and 11" Sig WWII canopy (SIGWC811) with is a close match to the debolt canopy used in the plans.

Jim

So many planes, no enough time or money.

I've been using the "Lost Jig" method to build wings where the LE and TE are made of balsa sheet set on edge. After the ribs are glued in place and the top spar(s) added the wing is removed from the board and the bottom excess of the LE and TE is cut off. So, the LE and the TE act as the jig while building.

I think the Beachcomber plans are finished. I'll email them to those who requested them later today.

David,

Fabulous job on the Beachcomber!! It's a wonder how complicated they made things back in the Golden Days!! So much neater, cleaner, simpler, sweeter and faster to build with less weight and more strength.

Thanks for the kind words, Jon. I left off a lot of info such as hardware, radio installation, nose gear, etc. I figure anyone who builds from plans has their own choices about that stuff. The spar is at 33% so if anyone converts it to a tail dragger you could simply switch the gear blocks to the front of the spar. The forward section of the top block will need to be hollowed to get the fuel tank high enough. I should have drawn that in, I guess. Of course, it will need fg cloth around the wing center section, maybe even shear webbing half way out the wing panels; that depends on the spar material used.

Hi David - I've been busily scaling down the revised Beachcomber plans you e-mailed me. This is gonna be a cool little plane with a 36" WS. One thing I noticed when referencing something else on my VECO kit plans was the airscoop - or lack of one - on the kit plans?? And the BC plans you posted early on is this thread has the scoop and it does not look like mykit plans. Is the VECO kit a different varient?

I'll shoot you a DXF copy of the 1/2A Mini Beachcomber when I get done - maybe even before I get done if'n I get stumped.

Thanks - Todd

Hi Todd. I traced the MAN plans. I'm not surprised that changes were made for kit production. Your 36" BC sounds great. I'll bet it will fly even better than my 36" Sun Fli IV.

Thanks,
David

Well... We'll see . I'm more of a builder than a flyer - and this re-scaling thing is fun when you have a CAD file to work with - I should consider Engineering as a profession . I like the reduced Sunfli4 that you did, but the BC is screamin' to be bumped up - even ahead of your Sure Shark and all the other planes I want to build... "scaled down ala Rainedave". Due time David.

Thanks for the clarification on the plans - I am going to delete th landing gear and air scoop (for obvious reasons) on my (our) Mini BC. Geez... after looking at the complexity of the VECO plans... NO WAY could I build this plane per plan. That Jim Kirkland had WAAAAAAY to much balsa (and genious) at his disposal... but whataguy... keeps us po' folk thinkin' a bit in the 21st century.

I'll be in touch,

Todd

David,

I just found this thread and would like a set of the plans. I'm building a new plane for the SPA Vintage event in Atlanta this fall.

Thanks,

Rich
