Thanks for the link, I've heard rumors, but didn't think it would happen. Here are more details:

Profi Quickee 500 6.5cc

The new Profi 6.5cc Q500 engine for AMA class 428 is a very exciting. The development of this new engine has been in process for over two years.

The photos you see here are of production samples and represent the finished version.

This engine brings the proven features of true world record holding Profi competition engines to Q500 racing.

Pricing for the Q500 engine has been established. Price for all Q500 orders placed on the backlog will be established as $385.00 including muffler. All orders placed after the initial delivery of engines is completed will be $425.00. You are encouraged to put your name on the backlog list and no money is required until engines are ready to deliver.

See Profi Q500 Parts for the current engine spare parts list.

Some of the features:

AAC piston and sleeve. Profi has the best piston material in the world and that is what makes the big difference in all
Profi engines.

Absolutely Perfect piston to cylinder fit. Very tight while cold, perfect at running temperature.

Integral rear bearing with the crankshaft forming the inner race of the rear bearing. Borrowed from Profi FAI competition speed engines where this is a standard feature but never seen on an American built racing engine. The result is a truly free bottom end. A side benefit is the very high quality steel used to make the crankshaft.

Stiffer Crankshaft resulting from the larger diameter at the junction with the crank disk and forming the inner race of the rear bearing. The dead free crankshaft rotation adds a small improvement in rpm compared to any regular ball bearing engine.

Balanced crankshaft, no external balance. This engine runs so smooth you will not believe it. 18.5mm crankshaft.

Crankshaft has 12mm gas passage with an exclusive asymmetrical configuration resulting in improved torque band at operating rpm.

Flow smoothed and angled crankshaft inlet port, for improved intake performance.

Domed piston. Slight RPM improvements result from the domed piston again adding to overall performance.

Front Bearing Retainer. The front bearing is held in place by a screw-in bearing retainer, one more item borrowed from FAI competition engines. And again the stability of the crankshaft results in a small rpm improvement.

Test flying is indicating that the Profi engine uses just about the same propeller combination as the current top engines. The test engines have shown great flexibility in propeller choice.

It may not be a "Q40" version. Most Q500 racing in europe allows venturies rather than the carb.

In talking with somebody that's ran one, it had some durability issues and was extremely touchy to needle. They only got two good flights out of 20+, so there appears to be more homework needed.

I'd also question the 12mm crankshaft opening when they're limited to a 9mm carb opening. I would think the air would slow down when it got to the bigger crank opening, causing a loss of power.

I'd worry about having to send an engine overseas for repairs. Yes, we do it with MB's in FAI, but they don't get raced nearly as often as 428/422.

I saw this blurb on that site, so I figured it had to be a q40.

8/1/07 Excellent Response from all over the Globe Many people have asked to be placed on the backlog list for the first delivery of Q500 engines. Q40 version testing should take place this fall and winter. Test flying continues with Nitro and FAI fuel. Some prop combinations work very well with FAI fuel.

Dfinately some issues working with a foreign supplier, but the globe keeps getting smaller. Like anything else, I'll wait and see how things shake out.

Thanks for the dirt.

You guys hopefully realize how lucky you are- live in New Zealand everything has to go back overseas for repair............and we have only ever had exceptionally good service.
Both the pylon engine manufacturers in the USA give us very good, and prompt service, regards trevor henderson nz

AFter a little more digging, found this on the site above. Looks as though the motor has already competed in the U.S. with very promising results.

6/10/07 Wow! Profi Q500 Turns 1:05 First Race Time Two Q500 motors were entered in a North West Q500 428 race this weekend. Heat times ranged from 1:05 to 1:09. This is the fastest time ever for the region. And 4 seconds faster than the fastest competitor. Profi almost lapped the entire field of entries. And the worst part...it was leaving a smoke trail the entire race, pilots didn't want to run it to lean! Thanks for the tests Tom Strom and Tony Huber!

Interesting,,, they chat about a Balanced crankshaft with no need for an external balance hub and claim its THEE smoothest running engine in its class.

I'd like to hear what Tom and Tony say about the Profi.

Gary, true, the speed of the fuel air mixture into the crank passage would slow (divergent duct) and the pressure would increase (Bernoulli sp? -- Pressure and velocity are inversely proportional ). I wouldn't think this would help performance but hell, what do I know, I'm just a salesman

In the Eurocup Q500 competitions, there is no limit to the size of the venturi. This seems to be the standard in Q500 in Europe.

I heard the same thing as Schmidt's post. One thing I can say is for sure. Is if the Profi engines are as well balanced as the FAI engines, it will be smooth as glass. That FAI engine is the smoothest engine alive. It's nice to see another manufacture getting involved.

Lets see if the extra 5sec. can be shaved off

There just as fast or faster than the earlier 1990 F3D planes. The names Tom and Tony aren't ringing a bell for me, but what Q500 design they using?
