Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has run into problems capturing DV video under Windows XP with a Dual Core Processor. My current rig:

Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Windows XP Home Edition
2 GB RAM
NVidia 7600GS
Creative Audigy (Original) - using the Firewire port through it.

The last time I was successful in capturing video, the computer had an Athlon 2400+ on another motherboard, but everything was essentially the same. I was able to capture video with Moviemaker, Premeire, etc with no problems.

Now - I can't capture no matter what I do. Windows refuses to even acknowledge the camera is there. Here is what I have tried so far:

- Replaced Firewire related files in XP to pre-SP2 versions (as suggested by numerous websites)
- Tried a fresh install of XP (straight off CD - no service packs)
- Tried 2 different cameras (JVC and Panasonic)
- Tried 2 different cables
- Updated every driver I thought was even remotely related
- Turned off Firewire networking

Anyone have any other suggestions? Please?

-Allan

Try using a DV cable.

Then, In Premere, go to Capture>Movie Capture

Click "Edit" on the Capture Settings and change "Video for Windows" to "DC/IEEE 1394 Capture"

Mike,

I appreciate the input - but the problem is "lower-level" than that. I know how to configure Premiere - I've previously had it working.

I've pretty much tried all the obvious stuff. I'm no computer noob. My computer is hand built by me. I've been around long enough to see Windows 3.1, 95, etc. I've installed several versions of Linux over the years. You name it and I'm probably comfortable doing it with a computer.

Sorry if this comes off as a little snide. I don't mean it too. I'm just looking for a little more in depth input than check config, install new drivers, etc.

I had a similar problem once, but as it turned out the computer was fine. The DV port on the camcorder failed. Did you try hooking your camcorder up to a different computer?

Maybe bad cable. Did you try another Firewire cable? SInce Windows won't recognise it, and you've reinstalled the OS I'd try the following to help eliminate the physical layer stuff, in this order:

1.) Same computer, same cable, different Firewire device (like external hard drive)

2.) Same computer, different cable, same camcorder

3.) Different computer, original cable, same camcorder

4.) Different comnputer, original cable, different camcorder

5.) Different computer, different cable, different camcorder

Other items, camcorder related:

1.) Make sure camcorder is in playback mode

2.) Make sure camcorder is in video playback mode (not photo playback if it can also take stills)

3.) Make sure there is no kind of DV -> Analog conversion enabled on the camcorder. (Something similar, HDV->DV conversion, had me dumbfounded for a week)

4.) Make sure the camcorder is configured for DV (Firewall/i.Link) output, not USB output. My Sony 8mm Handycam does this.

I hope you find your problem, and when you do, please share what the fix was.
