one other thing I did strip the retract units and grease them but I still find them very slow to retract even with a extra large air tank

Hello to Andreas & all L39 owners.

Today I managed to Maiden my L39 @ last.

Two really great flights with no dramas. Perfect landings on the mains followed by nose wheel touchdown.

Unfortunately the friend taking the first flight video was enjoying the flight so much he stopped filming not long after takeoff.

The second flight video stopped again just after takeoff, this time the onlooker using my camera unfortunately over did the close up so missed the plane.

Wheels did not retract cleanly but will sort them out by speeding up the upward cycle.

Also will put a stronger spring in the nose leg, it worked O.K. but will help rotation on take off by being a bit more posative angle of attack.

Brakes were superb.

All the best,

John C

I bought Kevin's Old L-39.

It has been re-powered with a Kero-Start Behotec JB-180.

I have about 8 flight's on it so far, and it is a very smooth and stable flyer!

Hi Andreas,

C of G as per plan & Kevin's setup, worked really well. With full tanks & UAT a little nose heavy but only for the first couple of turns & then O.K.

The plane is very stable & smooth to fly, you do gain speed if you drop down on finals.

I need to dial in a bit more flap for takeoff & play with the flap setting for landing.
I only had about 10 deg of flap for both, did not try my full flap setting so it landed fast but under full control.
Will put take off flap to about 20 deg & try my full flap setting next time.

Deployed speed brake at a fairly brisk pace, it definately slowed the model down & because of the high speed made it balloon upwards slightly.

The 2300AES had more than enough power. Take off on full throttle but most of the flight was at third to half, only used full for a loop.
Because my mains were in the airflow I left my 10 deg take off flap on for half of the flight. When I got the nose wheel in & the mains almost up I took the flap off & it definately flew a lot quicker.

A very smooth flyer & all my club mates who watched remarked that it looked very real.
It's size and presence in the air is fantastic & such an easy outline to see.

They even gave me a round of applause for my flight & landing.
It was rock solid on finals and probably the easiest plane to land that I have flown.[)]

Good luck with your maiden, if you have yours set up like the rest on this thread I can say that it will be a non drama & very easy flight.
These planes are superb.

All the best,
John

Congratulations John! I'm a bit slow with Dr.'s plane. Too busy at my work place. Can any body tell me the exact size of the screw that hold the fin in place? I can not get to the JL website. May be they are updting the page.
