HI guys,

I recently bought a Bridi Aerocomander Shrike. I used to fly the full scale and am hoping the model flies as well as it did. Has anyone here had any experience with this model? Any recommendations? I have a set of robart rotating retracts and hope they will do the job there? I was thinking about using two .40s. any reocommendations here would also be appreicated.

Thanks.

Joe

A friend of mine had one of these and it would snap on landing even at a fast landing. My understanding that it was in the wing design. I believe the later kits may had a different wing.
There was a thread in this fourm or the scale fourm several mounts ago on the Bride Shrike Commander. Look in the search box. If you can't find it let me know and I will check with Dale and see what he had to do to make his flyable.

Yes, do a search. A bunch of guys got together online and put in an order for new, better behaved aerocommander wings from a foam cutting house. I forget which place did it, but they'd still have the wing files if you wanted to order one.

Thanks guys for your replies. I'm concerned about the snaps on landing. This is usually due to tip stalls. Did your friend use flaps for landings? This will almost always cure the tip stall problem as the tips are flying at a much lower angle of attack than the section of wing with the flaps.

Another easy cure for this would be to sheet the wing with the foam saddles twisted a little to provide a few degrees of washout (I don't know if this is even possible). If someone had a perfectly straight wing (no washout- or even worse, wash-in), and was landing with no flaps, then tip stalls are almost guaranteed.

Yes, the full scale had 6.5 degrees of washout. Adding washout to the wings would work, if you could figure a way to do it.

I don't know if Dale used flaps or not . He is an excelent flyer and landed very fast and it still tip stalled. I don't think flaps alone will solve the problem.

BaldEagle,

There are several factors which would lead to tip stalls. The highly tapered wing and small tips is certainly a contributing factor. I heaver heard of guys using the computer radios to droop the ailerons to get the effect of flaps. This is a real NO-NO!. I'm not suggesting he was doing that, but you just don't even want to think about it.

Flaps would almost certainly have helped.

I know on Dale's first flight everything was set up normal. But he has not been the only one with that problem. ot a tip stall.

Ok.
thanks. I'll certainly be aware of that fact when I get started on mine.

I built one many years ago, and if you don't change the wing airfoil you're doomed, do not go for the scale airfoil, it will not work at this reynolds numbers, cheat on the wing design a little, do not make it as tapered and most important, thicken that airfoil to generate lift, I would go with a Clark Y airfoil, add about 3-5 degress washout, with its stock wing, it will be tip stalling at 40 MPH, mine met its demise on landing (had to, one engine was overheating), I deployed about 30 deg. flaps, lined her up with the runway and coming in high with the nose pointing down at about 25 deg., this thing started tip stalling (gear was still up) to the point of being uncontrollable, it went in. My airplane weighed in at 12 lbs. ready to fly and it was fully decked out, after mine I so four or five more at different scale meets do the same thing, at full throttle they flew very well, but you know, you gotta come down some time! These are not Sunday fliers for sure!

Walter,

Thanks for your post. This mirrors the other comments I have heard on this model. I guess I'll be cutting new cores before I build mine. Think I'll add a little chord to the tips and definitely add some washout. There are a lot of good airfoils used on gliders and I have the numbers on them. I do some checking before I pick one. I didn't look at the cores on my kit. Is that a symetrical airfoil or does it have some camber?

Thanks,

Joe

This was a long time ago, but it was at least semisymetrical, the main problem was that from the nacelles outward the thickness of the airfoil was extremelly thin, and it got to be just over a 1/4 inch at the tip, you are right, try and get some of those airfoils used by sailplane guys or go to the University of Champaigne, Illinois web site and take a look at what Selig has to offer, there are hundreds of airfoils to choose from.

I used to have the cowels and nacelles for that bird. I sold the nacelles but still have the cowels in a drawer if you need a set.

Does anyone have a set of the original wire landing gear? I just got a Bridi Shrike a few monthes ago. The kit was complete except for the wire gear.
And what do I need to do to buy a set of the new cores??
