I'm looking into putting a TowerHobbies .61 ABC in my contender. I don't know much about brands of an engine, but they look like a good deal....I'm just a weekend flyer and not interested in doing much to an engine. Are they a good deal? I want a reliable engine that can last for a good while. Also, how often do people usually swap out engine, if they do?

I have a .46 tower engine and it is a good value. I can't speak for the .61.

There is a guy and his son that fly at our field that have one in a Four Star 60. It took them a while to get it running just right...finally on Sunday, they got it running perfectly. It seemed to be making plenty of power. The only problem they had that day was that the back of the muffler fell off!

GMS and T.Tiger engines may be a little better. You should like any of them really. John

My TT 46 pro runs circles around my Tower 46. I might put a different carb on the tower ansd see if that helps.

I saw a guy with a Tower motor on an RCM trainer trying all day to get the motor to run right. The 'engine guy' at our club said he thought the carb was too big and the motor wasn't able to create a good enough vacuum to suck fuel into the motor. Could've been that the beginner had mounted his fuel tank in a bad position... just one experience, certainly doesnt mean they're all bad motors.

Aren't they rebranded OS motors anyway? Like the old FP series?

A guy at our feild had 1 and it ran like it had an air leak, sent it back to Tower and they sent him a new one, same problem. Buy a Thunder Tiger pro .46 for a few $ more, you'll be glad you did.

Good Luck,
Warren

I have the Tower 75 and I won't buy another. I am sticking to OS for the smaller to mid size 2 stroke engines. Here is what I am experiencing with my .75 It is leaking through the front bearing so it takes if roughly 20 - 30 seconds before it shuts down after kill. They tend to lean out in the air thus causing the purple to fade, I expect its life to be limited to a short life due to the leaning in the air. The tuned muffler is what gives them the power they have and that may be part of the reason its leaning like it does. They are very loud. It has been a pain in the arss... to get it tuned on the ground and it won't hold a setting.

I fly it on a WM super stunts 60 and once its life is done I will replace it with a four stroke saito/OS.

Save your self the cheap head ache and purchase a known brand engine that has a good reputation like OS etc....

Hey I had 4 brand new Tower Hobbies 46 Pro's with Tuned Muffler. I thought I had powerful motors. Was I wrong. The tuned muffler is where the power comes from. The mufflers likes to fall apart while the engine is in the air. The motor does leak around the front bearing. I rate there 46 pro as do not buy junk! What I bet the real problem is...quality control. If you really like to fly and not wanting to spending time messing with motors buy something else. I have put my faith in OS and have a dozen of them 2 and 4 stroke. OS quality control works very well.

Except for their 40-size engine, all of the Tower engines are re-badged GMS engines. I'm not sure who makes their 40 bushing engine. I've generally heard good things about both Tower and GMS engines, but the quality apparently can be hit-or-miss when reading the various threads.

I use the GMS 47 and Tower 46 on a couple planes. They do lean out A LOT in the air, far more than most others. Once you get it set well for flying don't mess with it. They can produce a heck of a lot of power when they are running right. If you use thread locker, you will have no problem with the muffler.

I cant say that either are great engines, but i have been happy enough with mine. One thing i don't like is that it can't be turned off by just throtle down. it just keeps going at super slow idle (so long as you are taxiing IN! ) I suspect its bigger brother will be pretty similar.

The tower will do the job, but if you can afford a few extra $ you might be happyer with an OS, Irvine, or TT. any engine has to be treated right to get good results, but the consensus is OS Irvine and TT owners have fewer complaints.

best of luck,
Shmo

update: Tried the Macs tuned pipe for this motor. Didn't add any RPMs at all, but it did increase the tank pressure a lot without slowing the motor down. ended up having to turn the high speed needle in about a full turn. Seems to run a lot more consistantly, doesn't lean out as much when you point it up.

I have been flying a friends plane since he put a Tower .75 on it. The ringed engines REQUIRE more break in time, but they seem to be reliable and strong runners after the break in. Good luck with whatever choice you make, but it's better to have more engine than you need and to throttle back some than to not have enough engine when you need it the most.

Believe me darkmask25 would be better off purchasing a well known engine other then the TH. Their is a thread over on the RConline web site with others having the same similar problems I am having.

As requested this is just my opinion.
