David I use epoxy because I build in the real world. I don’t wait to use unobtainium. I use appropriate products for the job. Epoxy may weigh slightly more that wood glue but the benefit of building time makes up for it. You would have to use a lot of epoxy to make any significant weight difference. I would prefer that if you have any other questions about the competency of my build, that you do it in private.

Roger:

Sounded to me like David was asking a legitimate question, not impugning your veracity or criticizing your building.

And, as far as I can see, the pictures alone are a great testament to your building skills.

Now, if you can fly the thing...

Haw.

Bill.

The canopy is probably the step I was looking forward to least in this build. I found out why when I started doing the rough trimming. The plastic was hard and thick. I knew quickly I was over my head on this step so I enlisted the help of, friend and Master Builder George Louden.

I packed the fuselage and canopy up and took them over to his house tonight. We were able to fit the canopy and remove between five and eight inches of length from it. That was important to me because the plane I am modeling is really a 300S. Now I heard that voice out there that said, “It won’t knife edge as well.” My answer is simply that it looks much better shorter.

Also a note about attaching the canopy to the unfinished cockpit, I am going to paint the inside of the canopy to make it opaque. I like the look this has given a friends birds and it is quick, easy, light and looks good.

I was in no way was trying to down grade your building ability. I didn't use epoxy because I thought it would add alot of weight. I asked you that because I wanted to now if I was correct or not. I instead used Probond at the suggestion of someone else and while it worked great it really slowed down the build time because it takes a good 10 hours to setup.

Believe it or not I'm no expert and don't claim to be one. I'm just another builder trying to learn beneficial things that might improve my own building skills.

im still trying to decide on my first 'large' plane, i know i want a gasser, and I really like DA engines, seems like everyone loves them..

Wings, stab, rudder, turtle deck and hatch are all pre-sheeted foam.

Should be an awesome combo... I'm using a BME44 on mine.

If rog, uses his epoxy like it should be I can't imagine there being much weight difference in the finished product. Maybe an ounce? Looking good though Rog, why don't you build mine when your finished with yours? I mean what are friends for? Right?

Well the reason for the break in postings is that no building has happened. But here is what I have been doing. First over the weekend I made the annual pilgrimage to Toledo. I was planning to buy a BME 50 but they were not there and when I went to the DA both I fell in love with the DA 50. I asked them if they had any and they said they didn’t but, that they had a couple that people were supposed to pick up. Then they told me that if they didn’t pick them up by Sunday a.m. I could get one. Needless to say, I was at the booth first thing!

I asked DA what three bladed prop I needed and they suggested a 20 X 12 Mejzlik so I bought one. After I got the engine I went over to the Planes Plus both and asked what size spinner I needed and Marcelo Colombo (Yes the planes designer from Argentina) said to use a 3 ½ inch. So I went over to the Dave Brown both and talked to Dave Brown and I is going to have a spinner custom cut and delivered to my house with out paying postage.

I know a lot of this sounds like name dropping, and it is, but it shows what is great about Toledo. You get great information from the horses mouth and not some 15 year old kid on the Internet.

Roger:

What's the point of having the names if you can't drop them?

But do remember, please, that some of us "15 year old kids on the Internet" haven't seen that age for 50 or so years, and some that are now 15 are pretty sharp.

If that DA runs as well as it looks it'll be fantastic.

Bill.

Mmmmm ... DA50 ..... that should be one nice flying plane.

Moses

edit: The DA50 weighs 3.13 lbs (with the stand-off mounts), that's about 50 ounces. Makes 5 hp too ! I gotta have one.

I picked up my fuselage from my George’s house since we were done mounting the canopy. When I got it home I masked it all up and painted the INSIDE. The paint I used was a Rust-Oleum black with metal flakes.

If I had this to do over I would paint the cowl first but I did it after due to timing in this case. I had an offer for help so I took it and was not willing to wait about a week before we could get together again. The results are adequate and would pass the six foot test. But if you get up real close you can see swirls in the metal flake caused by runs on the inside. My wife thought that was the way it was supposed to look.

I glued in the floors on top of the stringers between F2 and F3B, and F3 and F4. Then I sanded down the bulkhead at the back of the turtle deck. After that I started the fitting of the cowl by sanding down the top of F2. In the photo the cowl is just held on with tape..

Have you decided on a scheme yet?

I like the idea of a black canopy... saves you from doing the floor, putting a panel and finding a dang pilot that looks good.

If you don't mind here is a picture of mine. I made the panel with a scrap piece of 1/16" balsa, cut out the holes and glued some gauges in it. I cut the gauges from an old Private Pilot magazine. It's far from scale but it turned out ok. Next step is to find a dang pilot that will fit in it.

Ok....I've asked this before and never got a straight answer on it. What method does everyone use to attach the canopy? It is the only part of building that always has me worried. Please post your secrets fellas.

I meant to cover the canopy attachment in more detail but I must have gotten distracted. The basic process went something like this.

First we rough cut the canopy to fit how we wanted. Then we nibbled it down to where it got a pretty good fit. At that point we taped it down and put thin thumbtacks in the edge of the plastic to hold it down. We used Pacer canopy glue (I think it was Formula 550). It was applied to the outside of the canopy balsa joint and wicked in very well. It looks a lot like very watered down Elmer’s glue. The piece was left over night to dry and another application was made the next day. The glue dried clear. The covering will come up and over the lip of the canopy and cover the holes

I too was worried but it turned out to be reasonably easy once I saw how.

I got called in to work tonight again so no construction tonight.

I installed pieces of light ply between the foam and the balsa edge and just used 3 screws per side to hold on the canopy of the 24% I have

There hasn't been any change lately. I had to work late every day this week. Then today I tried to cut off my left index finger in a prop. Five stiches and a bunch of fancy bandaids and I was back to the field. I am not sure what it will do to building but typing is a vitch! More as it happens
