I'm a bit late, but regarding the instructions. I translated/re-did the instructions for them, so thats why there might be two differnet instructions. I only got the spanish ones and translated, so they are just more reader frendly, not improved.

Back at her finally. Last week I was on call and had to work every night except for Saturday when I cut up my finger in a prop. So this week I have been avoiding manual labor, even more than normal.

Tonight I got the main gear attached to the fuselage. An then I did a sand down on the sides to smooth things out some. I always get a kick out of putting a plane up on legs.

Then I attached the leading edges to the wings with wood glue. I was in no hurry here since I was about done for the evening anyway.

Since I have never made foam wings before I am a little apprehensive about cutting out the control surfaces. You only get one shot here. So what I did is to take one of the pieces of foam from the packing material and sheeted it. The piece is about as thick as the horizontal stabilizer and should give a good proof of concept. I used wood glue and left it under some cans over night tonight. It can be seen on the shuck above the wing in the photo.

Tonight was broken into to projects. I put masking tape on the presheeted wings and rough sanded the leading edges of the wings. (I know they are not perfect) At this point I just wanted to get them both sort of rounded. That was enough to get me tired of sanding.

Then I took my test piece that I made yesterday. Shown on top of the wing. I marked the piece as if it was the elevator. On top parallel lines 4mm from the cut line and on the bottom 10mm. I went to my jig saw and by tilting the table found that these lines would make about a 25% cut. 25% + 25% = 50%, hey that’s about right! I cut both lines and that went very well. Then I wanted to see how it would sand and I was very surprised that the foam sanded well!

By the way the instructions now show top hinges not mid hinges. Also all of the ready to cover’s shown at Toledo had top hinges cut.

I got the leading edges on the empennage tonight. Then I put the marks on the vertical stabilizer/rudder for cutting as the phone rang for work. This job thing is starting to get in the way.

Roger:
Great thread!
Have you measured the land gear height?
I plan on building one also for a Fox 3.2, and have read about the short gear.

Sanding was the primary order of the day. I did a very rough sanding on the empennage leading edges. I just wanted to get rid of the excess.

I also got the rest of the marks on the horizontal stabilizer/elevator cuts including for the counter balances.

Thanks Kevin. I did a very down and dirty quick measurement tonight. From the center of the engine box to the table, with the tail up, and got 11” without tires. Since I am using a three blade 20” prop that is one inch. Add tires and that is about right. I will be doing much better measurements much later. I have a couple of ideas to get more high including shimming out the gear and big tires.

I have 3.25" tires on mine and with a BME44 I have right at 12" clearance from center of the crank to the floor.

Just FYI.

Jigsaw time! The elevators have been separated from the horizontal stabilizers. I did this by putting the horizontal stabilizers in the bottom shucks and running them through the jigsaw flat to make the for aft cut on the counter balance. Then I used a 25% angle on the table for the long cuts.

Then I did some serious studying on how I want to do the rudder/vertical stabilizer. I changed my mind about ten times and called it a night.

I got the rudder cut off tonight then I faced one of the elevator/horizontal stabilizer sides. Since I had the jigsaw out I did a very rough cut of the block that fits around the vertical stabilizer. Everything will be top hinged except the rudder, I think I will center hinge that.

Broken record time. Tonight took the tape off of the elevator/horizontal stabilizer glued last night and sanded the excess off and rounded the leading edge. I also rounded the vertical stabilizer. Then I glued the other faces on and called it a night.

Boy am I having fun, not. Tonight I got the other elevator/horizontal stabilizer sanded and rounded. Then I did the basic rounding for the tail block. Made a big pile of balsa dust.

I have just about decided that I prefer a built up wing over foam at least from the construction side. I could have pushed the process some with epoxy but I think I prefer cluing sticks together with ca. A buddy of mine swears by foam for crash survivability. I have seen him bash some up that would have smoked a build up wing, but he flew the next week. It will be interesting to look back and see if it was worth it.
