I finally feel like I am building again. Today started by cutting some dowel rod and drilling it for ¼ inch bolts to go through. I don’t like end drilling my tube and do like reaching into the plane with a bolt that goes into the wing. I decided to do it backwards and am mounting a bolt in the wing and will put nuts on the inside. After I got the holes I glued the bolts in with the head flush with the dowel and threads sticking out.

Then I got out the jigsaw out and cut a new piece to fill one of the rib cells. I want even more for the bolt to hold with.

After I got both cut and fit I started working on the cardboard tubes. I added a thin balsa cap to the end and used polyurethane glue to hold them in.

The cutting of the foam came next. I used a steel rod and a torch for this. I heated the rod and made holes big enough for all three dowels. I smeared in epoxy and dropped in the dowels.

In the photo the top wing has the dowels in. The bottom wing just has the rib laying in place.

Hey Roger, your gonna love this plane. I flew mine this past weekend and WOW! This thing flys so well I can't believe it. Mine pulls a little bit to the belly in knife edge but I'm working to mix that out. The first few flights I had the CG to far back but once I moved it forward it really came to life. Flat spins are so awesome... anyway you're gonna love it. Here is a picture of mine after 2 flights. I still have to add decals and wheel pants but I love it.

The left wing is coming along well. I got the center rib glued in place and drilled for the anti-rotation pins. Then I put the hard points and bolt in the right wing. After all of that I picked the spot for my aileron servo in the right wing and cut the hole with a knife then burned out a clean box. I did a quick fit on the left wing and the anti-rotation pins are a little off, fortunately they are not glued in yet.

I finally feel like I am making a difference on this project.

Tonight I started on the right wing and cleaned up after putting in the hard points last night. Then I glued on the center rib with 60 minute epoxy. After that I worked on making the anti-rotation pins on the left wing fit and glued them in. Then I epoxied the horizontal stabilizers together after I adjusted the holes that they fit through. Finally I cut the wing tubes flush with the center rib using a coping saw.

I put in the anti-rotation pins and adjusted them on the right wing tonight. Then I shortened the wing tube with was about an inch too long. I used a pipe cuter for that. I masked the balsa beside the center ribs and then I used my Dremel tool with a sander head to trim the center ribs to shape. All of the plywood that meets up with foam in this kit is over sized and needs to be trimmed. Finally I cut and CA’ed the center wing tube. It sure was nice to use CA again

That is so you can set the incidence and if need be have plenty of room to adjust the wing root rib. It sure sucked trying to sand that baby until I did what you did... got out the dremel.

Due to all rain we had here Sunday I go a better than usual session in today. I finished my wing attachment and mounted the horizontal stabilizer.

For the wing attachment I started by cutting out a piece of plywood to fill the opening on the side of the fuselage. Then I CA’ed it in and put in a a couple of donuts and other reinforcements.

The horizontal stabilizer was pretty straight forward. After I got it into the position that I wanted I tacked it with thick CA. Then I fiberglassed the center. I thought the fiberglass with the kit was overkill and used some lighter glass I had. This was another reason to put the bottom stringers on LAST!

Tonight the vertical stabilizer went on followed by the rear facing balsa. Then I put the fairing blocks on the tail. I had been working this a one unit but I found tonight that it was much easier to cut them apart and fit them separately.

I used polyurethane glue for most of this tonight. This is the first project I have used it on and it is an interesting product. On the down side it is slow and when it foams up it tends to be a bit messy. On the plus side it cleans up and sands very well and it tends to fill gaps when it foams.

So have you tried to put in the robart hinges yet? I just tried to put some robart hinges on a test block of top-hinged balsa and it didn't come out so well. Anybody have some tips on using robart hinges, or a site that gives some tips?

Finally back at it! Between a badly need vacation and work, it has been a long time between postings.

Today I got to work about twice as long as normal. I got the rudder dry hinged (no glue yet) and got the hard point in for the control rod. The hinging for this part went a normal with the Robart jig. I put marks on the tail first for spacing and then the jig self centers. On the rudder I put it up to the hinges hanging out of the tail and marked them on the rudder. It was a little more of an art on the rudder since the jig did not reach all the way back to flat wood but it sill worked well.

I also made a quick test hinge to test top hinging. This went fine but I found that I need to put the hinge in shallower to get full down throw.

Then I fitted the cowling and drilled it for screws. After that I measured the engine, cowling and engine box and did some math to find out how much I needed to cut it back.

I cut out the Cowling for the DA-50 and did some testing to check my numbers from day 32. Everything looked good so I cut the engine box back and dry fitted it before I ran out of time. I used a Dremel with a cutting wheel and it did a great job.

Sizam: I will try to go into detail when I do it and include photos. The Jig will help some but like the rudder there will be some drill by eye also.

Lots more measuring tonight. I measured the engine mount and then marked and drilled for my mounting bolts. Then I used polyurethane glue to glue the engine box together. I don’t like to use CA on something that will take this much vibration a more flexible adhesive is needed.. Then I used small screws to pin the firewall to the box. The firewall fits inside the box and the pins go through the box and into the edge of the firewall.

The engine is mounted! I mounted the engine and then had to cut out the rest of the cowl. Lots of try, sand, try, sand. I used a Dremel tool with a cutting disk and sanding drum.

Roger:

Looks good.

A thought in passing - what would you think of the OS Pegasus 320 four in a similar plane? The Pegasus is a 53cc 4 stroke glow, horizontally opposed four cylinder, if you aren't familiar with it.

Even if nothing else, think of the sound of four stacks out the bottom!

Bill.
