I totally agree with Ken and what does post count mean anyway??? More posts, more experience, I think not, less posts less experience, again, I think not, up front and honest is the way to get the respect you are looking for and I do not see that coming from this member based on his own statements.

I dare him to reveal those other usernames...

I kind to have to disagree here, if you asked a question and say, Vert, Lunchbox, Mr. Mugen, or someone were to answer wouldn't you rather take there advice over a guy with 30 posts.

Post count is nothing; I've read some really pointless short posts on here, how should that count toward what you type in a message?

Besides, when I first started posting on this forum, I worked in a hobby shop. If people asked questions and I knew the answer, I could tell them a straight, non-biased answer. Because my post count was low at first I got ignored. It's like an unwritten forum law that those with fewer posts are less knowledgeable.

What we need is an average post count per day on everyones' profile, then if it's too high, you know they're just talking crap!

Chris.

well if you can help, why not post a suggestion or answer? i kinda agree though, most people will believe those with like 7,000 posts instead of just 4, thinking they arent really that serious about it, which isnt right

What you are not thinking about is time as a member. We have several good members in the forums I normally moderate that only have 50 posts or less that have been good members for years. Some of these guys I'll beleive long before someone with a huge post count in some cases. It's all about weeding through the stuff. It's pretty easy to tell if someone is feeding a line versus being truthful and some simple research will eaily show that. It's by no means perfect but when you put all the research together, it becomes easy.

Oh yea, then you have the guys that list all kinds of time in a certain part of the hobby in their profile but then post things that just cannot possibly be by any stretch of the imagination. Again, pretty easy to figure out.

I would also agree that there seems to be an unwritten law about post ount on forums, and not just RCU. I frequet others as well and in some cases I have a very low post count and see it, except from the people that actually know me or have met me, they usually step up for me in those cases.

Just a peice of advice, be unfront and honest, no matter your skill level, you will be surprised how most forums will respond favorably when you do this. It's simply not trying to be something you are not which as moderators we see all the time. Those types usually do not last long.

So maybe it all boils down to this:

You have good members that are honest and show no need to prove what and how much they know. They are honest about their abilities and are not afraid to show they do not know everything. If they make a mistake and are politlely shown, they will back off and even apologize

Then you have members who what to learn but do not know something and are afraid they will not be taken seriously because they think the question is onsidered to be simple and they do not want to look bad. Generally they are pretty good but tend to exagerate somewhat.

Then you have those who beleive their way is the only way and if you call them on it and prove they are wrong you get torn up

Then those that beleive the post count or time on the hobby means everything and will post anything just to get the count up.

As moderators our post counts will almost always be high because we have to monitor a lot of things, but sometimes our posts are as simple as what Ken and I posted a few posts back. If you want to really see how a good thread runs, go over to the airplane forums and read, even the beginners forums, actually especially the beginners forum. You will see older folks over there admiting they need help and they get all they need without being torn to little pieces. In the Giant Scale planes forums I have members who are absolutely brilliant and they help as much as they can, but you do not see them beating on someone, especially if that person is really adimant about a certain product though we know it has probelms, we will help out the best we can.

And you know what, over in those forums, they are generally good about staying well within the rules of posting. We have to explain things sometimes but that generally ends the issue.

I feel for the mods in here as they have a very hard job, were I have it pretty easy so Iam able to moderate more than one forum, I think I have 5 or 6 now where the Car/Truck forums have more than one mod. And we do not even get paid for this, we do it for the love of the hobby, not the power trip that we are accused of sometimes.

And I really hate to say this, especially since I just created a huge post, but we really should get back on topic, so if you need to response do so and let's let it go after that. Sound cool to you guys???

AWESOME---lol----

and i never knew having more than one screen name was a VIOLATION....

I only said that because AS the other posts said --you can be looked over and belittled for having a low post count ...

it was just an attempt to let others know i wasnt just saying things to say things ...i ment it ...I dont use my other screen names
because i dont remember the passwords...lol....no really ....for the most part ive had to find myself in old posts just to remember the screen names....i used to travel a lot and used a wireless lap to post and i never saved my passwords..

BUT i do remember getting messed with about post counts years ago ,,,so thats why i said that ...

IT MUST HAVE MEANT SOMETHING TO CAUSE THIS TO GET SUCH A OUT POURING OF LONG POSTS...

a ip address in CALI is different than one from florida or chicago or new york...right ---thats why you find no other screen names

---------------------------either way back on topic
i beleive if RC racing was more respected by its racers MAYBE JUST MAYBE it could be respected in the WORLD as a sport
for every guy that calls it a toy it just sets us back.....
if anything to evolve IT MUST CHANGE itself ......change is good ....
sort of like NASCAR talks about FRANCHISING,,,,yes maybe bad for the GUY who just wants to race and be apart of the races
BUT good for the sport ,,,FRANCHISING would make NASCAR more competitive ,,and safer

i respect the guy who just wants to go broke trailering his -not so expensive car - down to the track to get in the way of the faster cars
BUT for the guy who spends all his time and money to win ---the guy above is JUST IN HIS WAY....

in rc there is nothing worse when your on a lead lap and a new racer is all over the place causing wrecks.
calling rc a hobby or toy just shows that you arent that serious ---maybe you own a business ,or have a important day job or your wife and kids are more important or something like that---
but MAYBE JUST MAYBE some person is sitting in his or hers room wrenching on his RC hoping they can get sponsored or do this for a career..

RC racing and winning is important to me .....i love this sport hobbytoy whatever ....

Really?? This is extremely interesting to find out. I've been involved in the IT fields for just about 30 years now, and an IP address has always been just about the same worldwide. I'd be extremely interested in finding out how IP addresses are different in California.

Ken

A rose by any other name...

I just love to race. I don't care what you want to call it: toy, hobby, wothless pastime - I don't care as long as I get to race. I am able to go to around 10 points/series races each year - in addition to club racing. Most of them have over 200 entries. There is nothing like being able to travel to a new place, hang out with friends you only get to see a few times a year and get that adreneline rush from being up on the drivers stand as the RD says: "Clear 'em out! Down & quiet" and "Go On The Tone!"

I can't see getting bent out of shape, or even slightly miffed at having my trucks called toys. After all, I just dropped $19,000 on an 18' TOY HAULER so that I would be better able to travel to the races in this region! Maybe I should change my name to RC Toy Racer! lol! hmmmm, NOT!

i have always thought the general difference was that toy shops sells toys and hobby shops sell hobby grade RC. Any overlapping products I would consider toys. But when Im describing my hobby to clueless folk, I refer to them as toys.

like:

what did you get up to last weekend?

oh, i just played with my toy boat.

There used to be a car dealership in Perth called The Toy Shop. They sold exotic cars. Fast with 2 doors. All very impractical and marketed towards those with extra money and time. You get the drift.

Call it what you want, i do not call it a toy, a toy is something that my 6 month old boy plays with.
R/C to me is a HOBBY , yes i do have TOYS too, but R/Cs and 1:1 rockcrawling are my HOBBIES. Toys are something you do to pass time but you dont really care about much.... hobbies are something you love, eat, breath, and sleep!!!
Call it what you want, it could care less if you call it a toy or whatever. But it will always be a hobby for me

btw, imo, if more people would respect the hobby as something MUCH more than a toy... maybe the hobby/sport would get somewhere Until then, call it what you want

This might be too obvious. Question should be Hobby or Sport? Toy and Sport is like Ball and Basketball. Toy is a thing, Sport is an activity. Apples - Oranges.

Toys are things you play with. Sport is something you compete in for money, trophy or maybe just plain bragging rights. Would you consider it a sport if you are by yourself. Some might say yes, like trying to beat the record time, but again your competing against someone else's time.

For me its how you spent your time with your RC, I am a basher so its a hobby for me and it doesnt matter how much money I spend in it. If I want to join a race club or league, then I consider it a sport.
