not true, you can still fly the wooden blades on them, they are just trying to get you to spend more money. of course the carbon blades are going to be better but don't upgrade until you can hover consistantly, you don't want to fly into anything with carbon blades on.

I have heard it said not to use the Esky 3800, 3900 motors with the wooden blades. Mainly due to exceeding the safe head speed of the wooden blades. The 3100kv motor is also a good motor but of course not as strong. You should be able to compensate for this by selecting the gearing for how you fly.

Why doesn't everyone just go with the 3900 kv instead of making the modi's on the 3800k? Is there really that much
difference in the performance of the motor between them?
I'm going to buy the upgrades for my HBK2 this winter (motor, ESC, & pinion) What else do I need, or need to adjust or
program on the HBK? Is that alot of questions, or what? Looks like jaghobbies is a good place to purchase them.

While it's true that the 3900 can potentially deliver more raw headspeed, the mods required to fit a 3800, or many other worthy motors, are worth it because the 3900 just doesn't have the torque of the 3800. With the belt drive combined with the occasional need to lean into the collective, more torque (more consistent headspeed under power; less bogging) is a very desirable thing.

Besides, the "mod" only takes about 1 minute with a Dremel grinding bit. I use the HDX300 4200kv 9T motor with Dynam 30 ESC I got from Rusty. Opened the pinion hole in the frame a little and ground away a bit of the ridge surrounding the motor mount to allow for wire clearance. Medium pop-ups have little effect on rpm.

Higher gearing will give a little more pop, but if the motor doesn't have the torque ability, you could slap a 13T on it for 4500 rpm at 0ยบ pitch (hypothetically), but when you tried to pop it up, the motor would bog waaaayy down, the tail would lose all authority, and the heli would start spinning like it was doing the Hamill Camel.

Best results tend to come from higher torque/smaller pinion combinations that will yield your desired headspeed. If you're using a pinion that's bigger than 11T, and just hovering and sport flying, it may be time for a "bigger" motor and a smaller pinion.

I just fitted the3800 motor, 25 amp esc, and 9t pinion, only because the package came like that. I also have a 10t pinion, which will be the best for basic hovering with the training gear on?
Also beware, the brake was programmed on, I had to reprogramme to take it off

Really good info everybody. Still would like to know opinions on the 3100KV motor.
Is the 3100 KV more for hovering and sport flying? And the 3800 & 3900 for 3D
flying?

I've been flying the 3100kv esky with the 25 amp ESC, This package will fly the bird OK. perfect setup for hovering and learning. Don't get me wrong I have about 50 flights on my 3100 kv Bird with no problems at all. I'm talking figure eights stall turns flying in circles ETC. It's a very gentle setup and can be flown nicely with the stock 1000Mah lipo batteries. Good run times and nothing gets hot. I'm running a 10 tooth pinion. In my humble opinion. It's a perfect beginners package. Don't expect to do any aerobatics and you really don't have alot of power to spare. But if you want to fly around like a scale heli it's great... Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback experience on the 3100KV. I'm a beginner that started this
Spring. I want to upgrade my HBK2 motor so I will be satisfied with the size I install.
I assume that you can contol the 3800 & 3900 by throttling down to control the power?
Now that you have a 3100 installed, do you wish you would have installed the 3800 or
3900?

O.k. got all the upgrade parts for my HBK2. 3800 motor, pinion, brushless esc,
deans plug, & batteries w/deans plugs.
I haven't flown the HBK2. I've been using a HBFP to learn on, then winter got
here. Question is. Should I wait till Spring & fly the stock HBK2 to get the feel
of the bird, or should I just install the upgrades & learn from there? Will there
be a big handling difference from the upgrade parts? Power, etc?

When I swapped out the stock parts for the BL setup, I didn't really notice that much difference upon spool up compared to when the stock motor was new.

Then I flicked the idle up switch and lifted off.

The headspeed was noticeably, but not frighteningly, higher, and upon liftoff and flying around, the rpm stayed steady and the heli flew more stably as a result. The stock motor, even when new, would bog on increased collective, and now I don't notice any bogging until the battery strats getting flat. The batteries (stock Esky 1000mah/10C's) still get hot, but the motor and esc only get slightly warm.

As to whether you should switch out the parts before you fly it, or set it up beforehand, that's up to you. But if you don't fly the stock motor at all, you can sell it and the esc as new pretty easily in the classified section here or elsewhere and recoup some of the upgrade cost, or put the cash towards a HH gyro or some bling.

shizack, thanks for the pointers!
I've got 2 each, 1500, & 1 1800 mah battery. They have the Deans
connectors. I guess that's what I needed to know, if the heli was
going to be over powering with the upgrade motor, or if I should
start out with the stock. You answered my question. Seems that
the extra power makes it more stable & more manuverable.
I'll sell the stock parts as you suggested.
What HH gyro did you go with? Would you recommend that I
start flying my HBK2 w/a HH? Or first fly with the rate gyro stock?

About the Align pinions, I have the 3 gear(9, 10, 11) set and don't care for them because they flair at one end and it made for an unnecessarily difficult installation. The cylindrically shaped(straight walled, no flair) pinion fits in without modification, whew, one less headache!

Just my experience. I get most everything from Helidirect, they have them all, your choice.

I am using KA-400H 3500KV with E-Sky 25A ESC without any problem. This motor will come with two shafts 2.3 and 3.17 to suite with your application and you can find this motor here.
