ORIGINAL: high flyer 777 Why doesn't everyone just go with the 3900 kv instead of making the modi's on the 3800k? Is there really that much difference in the performance of the motor between them? I'm going to buy the upgrades for my HBK2 this winter (motor, ESC, & pinion) What else do I need, or need to adjust or program on the HBK? Is that alot of questions, or what? Looks like jaghobbies is a good place to purchase them. While it's true that the 3900 can potentially deliver more raw headspeed, the mods required to fit a 3800, or many other worthy motors, are worth it because the 3900 just doesn't have the torque of the 3800. With the belt drive combined with the occasional need to lean into the collective, more torque (more consistent headspeed under power; less bogging) is a very desirable thing. Besides, the "mod" only takes about 1 minute with a Dremel grinding bit. I use the HDX300 4200kv 9T motor with Dynam 30 ESC I got from Rusty. Opened the pinion hole in the frame a little and ground away a bit of the ridge surrounding the motor mount to allow for wire clearance. Medium pop-ups have little effect on rpm. Higher gearing will give a little more pop, but if the motor doesn't have the torque ability, you could slap a 13T on it for 4500 rpm at 0ยบ pitch (hypothetically), but when you tried to pop it up, the motor would bog waaaayy down, the tail would lose all authority, and the heli would start spinning like it was doing the Hamill Camel. Best results tend to come from higher torque/smaller pinion combinations that will yield your desired headspeed. If you're using a pinion that's bigger than 11T, and just hovering and sport flying, it may be time for a "bigger" motor and a smaller pinion.
