I'm sure this has been asked on this forum, but if so I missed it. Which kv brushless motor would be best to upgrade
a HBK2? How about the CP2? 3100, 3800, 3900? Why do they make different size motors, more guts, less guts?
9 or 10 pinion? Which ESC with what motor?

The Esky 3100kv and 3900kv BL motors are a K2 "bolt on" upgrade while the 3800kv unit requires some minor motor mount mods. I ran an Esky 3100kv motor and like the performance. However, more experienced pilots thought that it lacked power just a bit. That said, I would recommend the Esky 3800 or 3900kv motors due to the fact that they not much more expensive than the 3100 unit. I would also recommend that you go with the Esky 33amp ESC for either of these two motors as well.

As for a pinion choice, I would recommend that you take note of what some of the other members say about this. A good rule of thumb is too limit the headspeed to about 2700rpm while using the stock wood blades. Below is a headspeed calculator that might be of help.

P.S. IIRC, Esky recommends a 10T pinion for use with the 3100kv motor.

This brushless motor is good for the esky king 2 (check here). 3800kv with built-in heat sink

Thanks. Which ESC would you use? You prefer this motor to Esky? What pinion # do you prefer also?

I am running an Esky 3900 with a 10t pinion on one of my HBKV2's. Run a 25A ESC making sure you have the ability to turn the brake off and have a soft start...

Thanks. I'll make note of it for my HBK2. Let me ask this. Which brushless combo would you do with a CP2?

In my CP2, I'm using a Esky 3800 with a 10t gear and a Turborix 25A programmable controller, it seems to work pretty well. I don't know about the fit. I'm using a Heli-Fever 300 fiber body and I had to do minor mount mods (lengthend the motormount holes) to get the motor to fit. but all and all, plenty-o-power and it works well for me.

I use an E-Flite park 370 4100KV inrunner with an 8T pinion and an E-Flite 20 amp ESC batt thunder power 1320 13c I get 14 min of flight time.
More then enough power for me.

I have the esky 3800 with the esky 25A ECS and 9t pinion, but the 3800 requires a bit of a frame motor mount hack to make it fit and sit properly. I believe the 3900 fits right in

Why doesn't everyone just go with the 3900 kv instead of making the modi's on the 3800k? Is there really that much
difference in the performance of the motor between them?
I'm going to buy the upgrades for my HBK2 this winter (motor, ESC, & pinion) What else do I need, or need to adjust or
program on the HBK? Is that alot of questions, or what? Looks like jaghobbies is a good place to purchase them.

I run a 3800k in my CP2, just cause I got a good deal on it. Seems like both are very similar separated by 3 amps and 18g of weight due to size difference. From what I've read and have been hearing the 3800k is more suited for a belt application. But again, I'm not sure as I run twin tail rotor motors and not a belt bird.

Esky 3100k
Motor weight: 40g
Motor length: 28mm
Motor diameter: 25.9mm
Shaft diameter: 2.3mm
KV: 3100RPM/V
Free load current: 2.5A
Max efficiency: 80%
Max current: 13A
Speed controller requiement: 25A

Esky 3800K
Motor weight: 58g
Motor length: 30mm
Motor diameter: 27.7mm
Shaft diameter: 2.3mm
KV: 3800RPM/V
Free load current: 2.0A
Max efficiency: 80%
Max current: 20A
Speed controller requiement: 25A

Esky 3900k
Motor weight: 40g
Motor length: 28mm
Motor diameter: 25.6mm
Shaft diameter: 2.3mm
KV: 3900RPM/V
Free load current: 2.0A
Max efficiency: 80%
Max current: 17A
Speed controller requiement: 25A

Nice comparison KJShover... You can see the 3800 is about 2mm more in diameter..

Thanks, I looked around when I decided to go brushless. I'm still not sure of the benefits of the 3800 vs. the others but I was building on a budget and I couldn't pass up the price on the motor.

This is a very informative thread, keep it going guys! I am waiting (post strike here in the Uk!) for my 3800 outrunner, 25amp esc (both esky). I went for that motor as the deal was great, but I cant decide between a 9t or 10t pinion, for basic novice hovering and moving around. I dont want a mad head speed that will terrify me!
Also, when I was just about to order the popular 1350 megapower 15c battery ( 10 mins flight, and 2 hours charging with one battery is just too frustrating!) I came upon this website,www.flightec.co.uk, and went for their 1345 18c. Bit more money when you consider the postage of the megapower from the States to Uk, I felt if there was a problem, it would be easier to get sorted by a UK supplier. They also offer a guarantee with their batteries, I hope I dont regret not going with the majority on the battery choice.!!
