ramcfarland: Where you at? I've not heard, no seen any progress since you got your engine. Or did you send it back?

Today in Illinois was a beautiful day to fly, so I dusted off the 4 -Star Fourty and hit the field instead of work. Couple other guys (literally) hit the field as well, they'll be back in their shops doing repairs for the next few days.

I started on the Landing gear fairings, and have a couple of concerns about the gear flexing, and tearing up the fairings. I'll try and post a couple of photo's of what I'm thinking about doing. I'm thinking I'll place about a 1/4 gap between the plastic fairing and the gear skin, and place a thin piece of rubber all the way around and hide the ugly metal gear that would be exposed. Kinda like a boot that would slip over the skin, and remain flexible. That way if the gear did flex that much, it would cause the plastic fairing cover to either split open or pull away from the fuselage.

Also looking at installing the hard points (1/4 dowel rod- 8 each) for the screws to bite into, other than the balsa sheeting.

Great idea there Jim,makes nothing but sense-

Send my engine back?are you kidding? Its a beaut and I know I'm gonna luv it. a 14OZ tank will fly the Reliant 10 minutes give or take depending on your throttle usage; word is the Stinson with a "38" installed cruises at 1/2 power and I expect the same or better! I attached some pictures of it.

I have spent a bit of time getting the over all air frame sanded and filled as necessary...as in "starved Horse look" to some of the forward sheeting on the Reliants nose section. when I checked at differing points with a 'straight edge,'then a skim of (light weight filler," and then sand and then another. It is comming along nicely.

I'm slowly getting things together. Still working on getting the fairings cut out and fit, along with the functional wing struts that need to be fitted/installed. I've not yet started with putting filler on every thing, just getting it together right now. Still gotta get the wind shield/screen put into place, and other little details.

Looks good Richard. keep the photos coming.

Thanks-

I'm presently fitting the inner and outer cowl rings per plan and thats working out so far and it seems little trimming will be needed to fit and secure the cowl;speaking of which ,yours looked excellent lots of fun ehh

I'm about ready to cut the doors and hinge them etc.; the fuselage is 'close' to "finished" and I'm figuring what to do with SO much light weight filler while applying light skim coats as building up thickness along portions of the cowl and the QUESTION be...do I brush Sig's Stik It and proceed to iron the Sig Coveral "over those filled areas" I keep wondering wether Dap products products FAST'N FINAL light Weight spackling could be effected by the applicaation of the Sigs covering adheisive. I was thinking about glassing the forward fuselage first

As for the sig stik-its, you should be fine putting it over the filler, I've not encountered any problems using it. As for the cowling, yeah it was fun, so was the wheel pants, and the fairings. I'm getting kinda sick of styrene for a while.

Glassing the forward fuselage, huh? That might be interesting. Be sure and post a couple of photos'. Plane is looking good!!!!!

I'm working on fixing my small clip-winged cub. For some reason I'm picking up some major glitch's these last couple of weeks, to the point were I've almost lost her. I'm thinking a while back I had a fuel tank that split and put fuel down in the belly were the reciever is. I didn't think that any got down in there, but the other day, I removed a Y-harness that was running to the servo's and put them on seprate channels, for differental. I noticed that the foam had sucked up some of that fuel.

Now I'm wondering if maybe that fuel did get into the reciever, and is causing corrision of some sort. The receiver is a FM/PPM so not big expense, but I'm going to send it in to Futaba and see what they say. If they say it's going to cost more than I want to pay, then they can keep it, and I'll upgrade to PCM.

Yes Jim that is a plan for over 20 years I flew Airtonics and only got shot down once and prior to my shoot down another pilot on the same frequency AND flying P.C.M. went in, other than that no problem then a couple years back was getting glitches on my 1/7 P-47 so I up graded to PCM and problem solved another plus is PCMs resistance to gas ignition and magnetos...I think

I'm using PCM on the stinson, and probably from now on. But the old FM's are still good in my book. I've not have any trouble with my cub (FM) till after the fuel tank ruptured, so I'm pretty sure the 2 are linked together.

Tom and all-I found this picture of a bare bones full scale SR-7 or SR-8 and dug up my old 3 view drawings from my old Stinson SR-8 kit so maybe I will attempt a mock up ;I like the Stinson SR-9 but the windshield assembly proceedure leaves some thing to be desired, with Fibreglass being a superior chice I think...there I go again

ramcfarland: So I take it you're done with the gear covers / fairings? Did you make the wing struts functional?

I'm falling behind..........again...

Me too...depending on your definition of falling behind LOL

No I have not I'm "thinking on" making my own fiberglass wheel fairings. I figure mold release /wax, 2 oz or heavier fiberglass cloth ,being laid up over the 'included Top Flite fairings, hence the 'mold release' we will see. Been working on a pet project that I want to be flying this season ,basically I have been sanding and filling/sanding and finishing it and the Reliant.

Below are pictures I took of documentation I found today from a 30 plus year old kit previously posted here being my existing rotted fabric covered Sterling Stinson Reliant SR-8 that was covered with Sig's long D/C product called Sil Ray (miss the SIG Company as it were as they were a great source of building supplies for builders.

It's funny I was going to ask you about the fairing's, as they do seem very flimsy. I was thinking I might just glass the inside of them, to add a little strength, but let's see what you come up with. I did go ahead and start installing the hard points for them to screw into. I used brass 3/16 tubing to cut out my holes, then epoxied 3/16 dowel rod in there. Once dry I'll sand them smooth and redrill the 1/16 holes for the fairings.

I'm still thinking about the rubber boot idea, and I'm thinking I'll head into lowes tomorrow and see what I can find. I need something like 1/16 thick, or less, that can be used.

I finally got the other door hinged, and drying. Now If I can just get my windows cut out, and finished I'd be a happy camper. Slow and steady wins the race.
I did post a pic of my cub, that has been giving me fits. Enjoy...

Jim
