Thanks found em.. Too bad what's in the kit breaks up so easily.
TF-22B Stinson Reliant SR-9 upper landing gear fairings $36.00

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/18/2007 11:38:07 PM)

AND here is me working on the left wing still ...'my excuse being finishing a repair' on another project-'[8|]

While adding the cap strips to the ailerons found this "alignment jig," very useful and a time saver,when trying to ensure the aileron caps are lined up with the corresponding wing ribs.

There is an increasing amount of GREAT information being posted on this thread! [:)]

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/19/2007 12:36:26 AM)

We'll I've got the Right Wing itself done, but working on the flaps and Ailerons. Almost got them done, just got to sand the angle's on them for proper delfection. I went ahead and added the metal tube to both wings and joined them on my table. Wow, what a wing!!! I can only imagine what she'll look like once the fuselage is placed in between those wings.

I'm still going to try and use the stock fairings that came with the kit. However I'm for sure going to sand the inside of them and line them with fiberglass cloth and epoxy. Hopefully that will help them stand up a little better to usage, and not crack so easily. And, if after a few flights it starts cracking, then I'll be forced to upgrade.

Fast Richard: You're going to have to step it up!! I'm so close to starting the fuselage formers I can taste them.

Jim

I have always noticed that for cooling, folks always cut just the bottom of the cowl out,,, I have always thought it made it look like it has a smiling face [:)]

guy's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, what font is the lable

jimcork1 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/19/2007 3:55:26 PM)

The font? The photo taken from actual plane with origional marking. So don't know what they used in the 30's.

I have used the photo to make a color transparency water transfer and make markings. Then spraythin coat flat poly on top.
But it has been quite a while and the materials are a bit $$. I was thinking you could use the photo to form your print. Wish I could tell you more on making one.

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/19/2007 4:14:02 PM)

Hello all

WhoDaMan thanks for the picture ,thats the version I'm planning on doing doing,an SR-7 with its distinctive windshield ,which I always I favored, not to mention the factory schemes of SR-7s and of course always liked the Stinson logo!

Jim :yea I'm falling behind but I was looking for a "stick kit" to build for the pleasure of it and wanted "another Reliant," after several War Birds and composite pattern aircraft so I'm enjoying this build AND I do believe the right wing will go pretty quick ..

Lexington Park glad you like the jig idea,me too! and congrats on the catch my brother is into fishing too!

Attached is a picture or two of my very old 'Sterling Models' Stinson SR-8 fuselage which has long been retired-

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/19/2007 4:24:48 PM)

we are gonna have to get together when are birds are finished and get some photos planning on red and white scheme i cant wait to get her done and flying then i can start my 102" meister me-109

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/19/2007 10:08:59 PM)

I was planning on a Red & White color scheme as well, but I seen a Blue & White one I like as well. Here's a couple a shots of the Red & White that I'm thinking of.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/19/2007 11:15:03 PM)

hey thats funny thats what i am really considering doing such a cool scheme isnt it

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/20/2007 11:03:31 AM)

For the all important Stinson logo why not Try Gary at get stencils www.gary@getstencils.com YOU will be glad you did just give him a call and tell him Richard sent you.

Must of been done in my sleep ...pictured is the flap well under way:the instruction manual called for a (1/16" space)between the top of the flap leading edge and the top of the wing surface SO I used scrap 1/16 balsa slid in place before 'tack gluing' the flap L.E. to the wing flap T.E.

Its early so I will be sure to go over this increasing in length thread...and thats a good thing[;)]

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/20/2007 11:07:40 AM)

Looks like an SR-10 I have plans for a 72" version that clearly shows the rather complex windshield on this late model Reliant-

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/20/2007 12:49:24 PM)

heres some progress on the right panel

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/21/2007 2:00:41 AM)

Progress for sure-It looks like I will start my right panel this Wednesday I already completed all the sub assemblies for the right wing. It will be great to frame up the fuselage it has to go faster;we will see. keep up the pictures[8D]

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/21/2007 2:31:15 AM)

I CANNOT wiat for the fuse wings are getting boring i asked the wife to get me some hitec 645's for xmas lol hopefully santa is good to me lol decided on a g38 i am always thinking ahead for next projects to i am up in the air between the TF Jug, Meister 102" me109,or ziroli stuka........[:D][:D][:D][:D]

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/21/2007 11:52:41 PM)

I was all set to finish up the right wing flap last night. I got the holes drilled for the hinge points, then I cut the flap lose. And upon putting the hinges in there I couldn't for the life of me get the hinges to work right. Then after about 30 Mins it dawned on me what the problem was. When I was using the drill guide I used the farthest apart marks for the inside, and the close together marks for the outside (bass ackwards). So a little epoxy and a 3/16 stick of balsa and all 6 holes have been neatly plugged and sanded smooth.

Tonight I will attempt to hinge the flap once more, using the correct spacing on the hinge points, and maybe even get a little work done on the landing light for the right wing. Happy Thanksgiving.

Jim

WhoDaMan -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 12:13:49 AM)

Hi Jim:
Do you think you will be detailing the interior of the plane, the cockpit area? I think I am going to spend some extra time on this, I love doing that, Also using a FS how bad will that over the long hall do to your finish. Thanks

Dave

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 3:48:20 AM)

Finished the left panel but will not hinge the ailerons and flaps till later. Hinges- been there done that- on a couple other Top Flite kits 'the drill jig and exact measurements are the trick.

Gooble Goobbble.......[8D]

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 4:15:06 AM)

damn that looks awsome rich makes mine look sloppy lol

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 2:19:33 PM)

We'll the Right Wing is done and hinged. Now for a little more detail work on the retractable landing light for the right wing and I'll start the fuselage. I have my servos' for the Flaps, the Futaba 3010's so I'll go ahead and get them mounted. They are also the same size as the Hitec 645's so I'll make those servo mounts and install them as well.

I'm just using some Futaba 3004's on my landing lights. I'll post a couple of photo's tommorrow of the wing joined and the landing lights down and lite. Hopefully I can stay out of a "turkey coma" long enough to clean up my building table, and start a former or two for the fuselage.

Earlier someone was asking about detailing the interior of the plane. With as large of an interior as this plane has, you almost have to detail it, or put in tinted windows. I've already got the cockpit interior kit bought, and I've got a couple of idea's I'm working on. I'll probably use 400 grit wet-dry sanding paper for the flooring. I'll visit a material shop here in town, and get some white & red (Manogahide) I can't spell it? That's what I'll use for the inside door lining.

Jim

WhoDaMan -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 2:26:38 PM)

Yep Jim It was me that was wondering that, That sounds like a great idea, Thanks,

Dave

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 5:26:28 PM)

I've got the linkage for both retractable landing lights set up, so they have the same throws. I'm just waiting for the epoxy to dry on the right light & fixture, so that I can hook them up, shut off the lights, and watch them go up-and-down for a while. I did put the wing together ( without the tube ) to get and idea of the size. Whoa!!

This is going to be a fun plane to have out at the field this spring....

Jim

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/22/2007 5:43:39 PM)
