Happy Thanksgiving!! Here's what the landing lights look like!!!! Start the Fueslage in the a.m.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 1:33:31 AM)

SWEEEETTTT..... got my right wing sheeted on top today will finish it tomorrow will be installing landing lights as well when i get servo linkages hooked up in the future are those the ram lights?

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 2:08:58 AM)

They are RAM Econo Landing Lights, Tower has them for like $21.99. I've got them set up on my retract servo switch for the time being. But once Santa claus makes his delivery of my 9CAP PCM system, I'll put them on a channel that can be mixed with Flaps. That way once the Flaps are deployed, the lights will come down and turn on. I've not got the electrical connectors from radio shack yet, so I'm holding off on doing anymore wiring with my other lights until then. Also I'm waiting till I get the fuselage framed up and the wings mounted so I can visualize how I want the wiring to run (out of sight).

You know what they say "A picture is worth a thousand words" guess what I'm starting?

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 2:18:01 AM)

Grotesquebass: Be sure and post some pictures of your landing light set up. I'm interested in seeing other peoples
ideas and creations.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 3:26:03 AM)

u can see pics of the setup at www.toysbytim.com how to section sorry my cam went down yet again santa gonna bring a new one just go to projects page and click how to's lotta good info on our plane there great guy to gave me alot of good ideas

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 4:35:08 AM)

I've seen his page, and I used his set-up, yet I changed the fixtures to look a little more scale. But you're right he's got some good information in there. I'm diffinatly going to use the 15-pin connectors for the wing connections. That seems like it would make set-up much more easy.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 2:03:19 PM)

definitly alot easier with 15 pin connections can u snap a pic of the bottom of you wing so i can take a look???

WhoDaMan -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 2:13:41 PM)

Hi Guy's, Were getting a little closer,,,,,,,,,,,, Good lord those lights are sweet

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 3:00:30 PM)

Grotesquebass: Here's a couple of shots for you, I'm not sure what you're wanting to see. But I did leave a good 1/16 gap around my light fixtures, and the case for covering to be applied. And also I've got to build a lens ( using clear plastic sheeting) & lens cover from 1/32 ply to go over top of the actual light itself.

Fast Richard: Formers are growing in number, I'm thinking I might even get the bottom section framed up today, if my CA glue holds up. Of course my guy building his cessna is needing more help as well, so that might slow me down.

Enjoy!!

Jim

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 3:21:35 PM)

thanks for the pics i may just go the route youve chosen heres a crappy pic with my computer cam

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 6:41:46 PM)

It's basically the same route as Tim's lights, just the fixtures are different. I made my fixtures from left over light ply I had from another kit. Then made them about 1-1/8 inches wide with the tab. Just think of those old B-B gun targets you can buy, that are self righting after you hit them. Then I used an old sig push rod, that a 2-56 rod will just fit through with a little friction. Then I had two old control horns that I epoxied on the side of the fixture and cut down to fit. Once that's completed I put my light in what I thought was the center, traced with a pencil, and used by dremel tool to hollow out the center section. Then placed a piece of plastic underneath the light and used tape to hold it in position. Mix up a little epoxy and pour in around the fixture and let harded.

Earlier someone was asking for documentation about the landing lights. Here's a photo of the color scheme I'm going with, if you look at the wing you'll see the light. Also here's a photo of a close up shot of the landing light. Hope this helps you with the placement.

Here's the plane photo, it didn't post with the original message.

Thanks!

Well if this was a race I would be dead last- however jaaron01 is helping me for one make a few decisions regarding the build and I like that!

jaaron1 we are going to have twins lol thats the scheme i had picked out when i started the build lol

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/23/2007 10:55:50 PM)

Grotesquebass : Here was the color scheme that came in second position. And I still like this scheme alot.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/24/2007 2:18:34 AM)

damn thats nice too i think i like the red a bit more tho :D

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/24/2007 2:29:46 AM)

So does my wife. Guess know you know why I'm going Red & White.

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/24/2007 3:07:02 AM)

All formers are completed, and framing will commence in the am. I've gotta go to the hobby store and get a new bottle of CA before the games can begin.

Boy that Blue SR-9? looks great maybe thats the one for me-checking my options[8D]

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/24/2007 4:51:42 PM)

ramcfarland: As for which model that is, it's hard to tell. You've probably already seen this web site but if not there are hundreds of photos of all kinds of stinsons that you might like to check out. It's a good place for color schemes as well. Just depends on how scale you want to go. I've seen stinsons of every model, and almost no two look alike.

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/25/2007 1:42:11 AM)

Hey hey got your PM thanks "no two alike,"thats fer sure[:)]

Commenced RIGHT wing nothing glued but a wedge thus far hope to have the thing well under way on Sunday.

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/25/2007 3:02:11 AM)

To anyone whose framing the fuselage. Once you've got all the formers glued in place you will be instructed to add the bottom longeron. When you do you'll see that from formers 5 through 9, you won't get a straight line as the book says. No matter how "good" & "straight" you build. I went ahead and made the cuts in Formers 6,7 & 8 for a nice straight line. We'll see what effects that will have on the construction progress down the road.

SEE Below from Topflite FAQ:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm at Step 6 on Page 29 of the instruction manual. In order to get a straight line for the bottom longeron (when viewing the formers from above the work bench) between formers 5 and 9, I would have to cut a notch of perhaps 1/4" in former #6 and somewhat smaller notches in formers 7 and 8. My formers fit between the main stringers. Can I just align between formers 6 and 9?

A straight line from F5 to F9 duplicates the lines of the full size aircraft. Variations of 1/16" (not unusual) at a couple of construction steps can result in a 3/16" or larger deviation at some locations. This is a large aircraft and small variations can lead to large cumulative deviations. Unless you intend on competing in large scale contests, going from F6 to F9 would work and probably look better as well.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/25/2007 3:07:42 AM)
