I'm using the 21st Century covering as well. I plan on taking a piece of the covering into one of the local auto parts stores that sell paint. A buddy of mine took his there, and they matched it with a computer program they have. Then they loaded it in a spray can for him as well. I'm going to go that route and see how it works out for me.

As for painting the 21st centruy, you don't need to.

Hi Fast Richard,

I have a TF Stinson SR-9 kit awaiting my finishing up my H9 AT-6 assembly(its an ARF). I also have a Pica Waco YMF-3 kit awaiting.

Pardon my ignorance. What are those black things your T pins appear to be stuck through?

Hello Red1 and welcome aboard-The 'black things,'are Rocket City UFOs called (pin clamps) --->to use simply insert a pin thru the center and press the pin clamp in place,the obvious advantage is the pin now has a greater surface and "clamps"the balsa sheeting,etc.,in place--As far as I know they are dis continued and what a shame[&o]

put it in a spray can for him huh amazing i may just go that route as for painting the 21st century i was going to paint the trim of the bird such as white around edges

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/27/2007 10:50:04 PM)

You might be able to do the painting of the trim. I'll have to admit, I've not done any painting though I'd like to one day. All of my masterpieces, if you can call them that, have been with monokote, and Century Fabric. Maybe someone else on this thread can answer the painting question. That would sure make doing the trim around the rudder easier. I was just planning to use Century fabric and bend it around the corners, I've done it before.

Any pro's out there with experience of putting paint on top of 21st Century Fabric??

Jim

In the words of Jack Sparrow "Problems arose, ensued, and were overcome!" This little problem took 3 marlboro's and a hot cup of coffee, along with 30 mins to figure out, if I can save someone some pain and agony, here goes:

Word to the wise about "Building the front of the fuse (Pg.30) Step #2."
When they tell you " test fit the die-cut 1/8 plywood left bottom deck and the left forward fuse side to the fuse. Note that the forward fuse side must be notched to accomodate the cottom corner braces of former 3 and 4." This is a flusterating area because things will not line up as supposed to, but before you start notching anything out and scratching your head. Go ahead an move to step 4 and add the vertical former bracing to both sides of formers 3,4 and 5.

FYI...vertical former bracing is 1/8 inch thick. Simple math would say 2 x 1/8 = 1/4? So when you adding that to former #3 you gain 1/8 in on the back side of the former, thus why left forward fuse side (which key's into left bottom deck) is all off by 1/8 inch. See attached photo's and heed my advice, skip step #2 & #3 proceed to #4, the go back and due #2, and #3. At least this will not be visible once all is finished.

On a lighter note the Stab saddle turned out great!!!
Jim

Hi guys: I've just been given a stinsin reliant (gold edition). The person that gave it to me had put into the weeds breaking off the landing gear and cowl. The gear fix is straight forward but the cowl is trashed. Need a new one. Where do iI go for a new one? Also need a manual. Can anyone steer me in the right direction.

When you get to this point, which probably wont be long. Let me know if you need better photo's to see how this thing fits. After I figured this thing out tonight, I kicked off for the evening. To much flustration was involved in that process, and ruint the rest of the evening.

Hi Bryan

Thanks for the welcome. If this thread is anything like the Waco YMF thread it will be great learning/teaching tool. I'm looking forward to monitoring this closely...and maybe even contributing from time to time. [:)]

Hi Richard,

FYI. I did a search on Google and came up with two items of interest concerning T pin clamps. 1) Go to http://www.tpbweb.com/media/catalog/311.pdf. There you will find an article entitled "How to Make Rocket City Pin Clamps". 2) At http://www.airfieldmodels.com/information_source/model_building_tips/tools.htm you will find a discussion of pin clamps. Supposedly Nelson Hobby Specialties, Keller, TX sells them [ RCL 55 Pin Clamp, 50/pkg, $3.19 ]. Just to be on the safe side I dropped them in inquiry questioning whether these were still available through them. I'll let you know asap. BTY, this article also explains how to make them.

padoni -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/28/2007 4:00:57 PM)

Thanks for the info on finding the cowl and instruction book. very helpful. another question????? Is it the AT-6 spinner that is used on the stinsin and what size is it (2 1/4") ? You Guys are a great help, I'm learning a lot following your build. Going to have to build My own.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/28/2007 8:01:05 PM)

it has been alot of work so far but seeing those nice gull wings sitting against my wall makes it worth it finally starting to look like something...

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/28/2007 8:23:04 PM)

Here's some more photo's, I don't know how much better they are, as my camera can't decide to focus or not on close objects.

Grotesquebass -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/28/2007 11:28:59 PM)

alright so i wanna install the ply doublers BEFORE test fitting the front mount right???

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/28/2007 11:36:20 PM)

Well I'll be...So Nelson has them!!! good going!!!!!!!!! gonna order some .
Here is where I'm at on the right wing panel -getting close to building the fuselage still un sure about the O.S. 200 4/C... I mean it appears on the cover of the latest issue of Model Aviation installed in Jason Shulmans Composite -ARF Integal which makes me think its a stump puller;however considering the OS 160 "twin" is shown on the Gold Edition Stinson plans and considered (marginal power),I figure the 200 4/C would be perfect.

jaaron01 you are on the roll.......

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/29/2007 1:28:20 AM)

Yeap, if you want to make life easy. Also it might save you from having a 1/8 gap to content with, later on.

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/29/2007 1:33:36 AM)

ramcfarland: slap a G-38 on the front of that monster and invest the extra money in another project.

As for being on a roll, things slowed down here for tonight, I was voted in as the new "Club" secretary. So I was over at another guys house getting all the files that I need for this massive job.

Tonight I just epoxied on F4C doubler, and the rest of the F3,4,& F5 doublers. I let that epoxy dry good, and tommorrow night epoxy on the left & Right Fuse sides.

Grotesquebass: How's the fuselage coming? Did you figure out the straight line business between F5 & F9?

Jim

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/29/2007 1:37:34 AM)

padoni: Yes it's an AT-6 spinner sold by towerhobbies, cost is about $44.00 bucks. They also list the different adapters that will be needed depending on your engine, and prop shaft size. Let's see some photo's of what your working with, Pre & Post Operative.

Jim: Thank you for the info. I will take some photos and post thwm.

ramcfarland -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/29/2007 4:42:46 PM)

G-38 -well okay lots of votes on that one can you tell me about starting and vibration problems if any??

Well thought this is useful to those starting or considering building this "classic round engine, golden age,Gull wing Stinson;" so posting it :being step#22 page 21 the use of 'masking tape' allows quicker and better completion of this step after all,balsa is SOFTER than spruce-go figure-

jaaron01 -> RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build (11/29/2007 9:00:48 PM)

For using a G-38, you'll hear horror stories about every kind of engine. Everyone I know who's had problems, has tried stupid ways of mounting them. Don't use the soft mounts, stay with a hard mount. Ensure your firewall can take a engine of this size, which if you add some extra bracing, which most do, you'll have no problems

Engine vibration is normally caused by out of balance prop, especially on a engine of that size. For balancing a nice wooden prop, buy a can of spray polyurethane, and if one side is a little heavier, just make a quick spray on the back side, let completely dry and try again.

And as I said above, using soft mounts on an engine of this size is usually not a good idea, like a washing machine, once things go out-of-balance, they only get worse.

Starting problems, just choke them till you get a good pop!!, Then release the choke and flipper over. Once you get them broke in, they are no problem. Most people who have problems starting them, have the prop installed in the wrong position, and don't follow through compression stroke with there flip.

Jim
