Since I enjoy building and posting and have received some interest based on the number of hits in my gallery shots of my Stinson Reliant build as it takes shape and continues here.

At this point I'm considering modifying the cabin area to replicate the SR-7 or 8 version of the full scale.

Please post pictures and discussions of your TopFlite Stinson projects

I'm about 90 % finished with my TF Stinson. I found it to be an enjoyable plane to build. The only part of the process I didn't like was installing the windshields. The first three sections were easy but then it cam to glueing in the last section. It was hell getting it in an securing the pane with heavy duty tape. That's without getting any RC51 on the windshield in the process. I'll post some pictiures tonight.

Well thats interesting and seems I won't find out as I'm doing an SR-7 what can I say thats always been my fav with its plate glass(I presume)40 Ford style windshield I love it!![:D]

Ok,, so I was given the Stinson. It was covered, servos and engine installed.

The down side..

Super Tiger 3000 ,, Never had one of these ever run properly

covering,, edge seals have no over lap, just cut with razor and is pulling up on the edges.

Flight controls don't move freely and bind on the frame not to mention limited throw due to fit of the hinge line

Missing parts such as wing struts and instructions.

I have bought a Saito 1.8 to power it.

80% with covering and controls repair.

Doors installed with my latches that spring load closed

Radio is standard futuba but will replace with High Torque servos for elev, rud.

I will fly this bird when it is flight ready.

has anyone installed struts and if so how did you do it. I will need them to be load bearing for spins.

Congrats Jim-sounds like you have a handle on the project,replacing the 3000 with a 180 4/C should be nice indeed. As for the load bearing struts... suggest you start a new thread with just that question and I'm sure you will get answers-AND when you have the struts mounted to be load bearing let us know here...[:D]

Progress slow this week but soon will have the left panel done and expect the right panel to go together in a week even at my slow pace. Sure looking forward to the fuselage construction [;)]

Top Flite does a great job of walking you through the strut building process. You can download a PDF construction manual through Top Flite's website.

FYI I am planning to make custom struts and not follow the TF manual. I plan to attach them to the gear then have the wing part screw as plans to the wing. The struts will be 2 parts on each side. The bottom strut attached to the gear will be permenant. The wing will have a plug in joint with lock pin above the faring so I don't have to work with the faring each time I add the struts. It would have been nice to have the materials from the kit to build the struts but the previous owner that left me the kit is no longer available to ask for their location.

I added a pic of my last project and my little cub.

Nice C-133 and clipped wing Piper.

I missed a weeks worth of constructing my Stinson as I managed to hit one of the pilot PVC pilot barriers just after touch down and spent the better part of last week reconstructing the right wing tip on another bird of mine.So now I'm seriously considering getting my eyes checked as this is my second crash in 3 years due to vision problems,more specifically my depth perception.

I suspect building my Rt wing panel should go quickly and then on to te fuselage which I look forward to

Looking forward to hearing more from you all its what makes this hobby sport so rewarding-

Progress is slow, The wing is complete with controls hinged. I am considering making a thumb screw on the lathe to attach the wing vs socket head screw. Servos installed are standard futuba waiting for High torque bb to arrive. Next up is throws on the wing , Y connectors for ail and flaps. Then the dreaded struts. [>:]

Update. The saito 1.8 is installed. Throttle servo connected. The fuel tank is installed on a pull out tray. I considered installing the tank sideways but could not get the fuel pick up to function properly. The tank c/l was set to the c/l of the carb. Fuel starvation would occur on low fuel in a turn so I mounted it lenghth wise as most planes. Fuel lines were brought our directly behind the engine.The cowl now fits correctly but must be cut for the muffler exit. I have sealed the firewall with 30 min epoxy.

Door latches are complete and doors ready to install. I found the interior kit but unfortunately the front seats are missing as well as the yoke. This was not a yoking matter.[:)]

I am also missing the struts. Going to building supply today to see if I can find replacement materials.

When I install the wing I will take and post photos.

Thanks for the infromation I was suspicious of the side mounted tank as well. Looking forward to pictures.

Been doing some'maint. work on another A/C so no progress to report at this time.

Installed elev. servos today,, 80+ oz each. After installing both chattered like no tomorrow.

The standard 40 oz removed did not chatter. Don't know what's going on. Called MFG they are sending two replacements asap.

UGH to removing them again.

Well thats good Radio manufacturing P.R... but hummmmmmm were the newly installed 80inch Oz servos digital? and if so were linkages binding and or over traveling------> I.E. giving you more surface deflection than the surface(s) could move?
Do not want to insult your intelligence-[8D]

Just picked up a "MAS EPOXIES" 60cc Syringe at the wopping price of 4-;to complete step #20 page 19-* just could not bring myself to walk in to a Pharmacy and ask if they sold syringes[X(]

You can get syringes at the local veterinarians for cheap usually. Even most pharmacies sell usable ones for administering meds to infants and they are right off the shelf.

Servo's were not digital. Linkages are free to move and chatter even when moving the flight controls. The Futuba 148's that were removed moved the same controls with ease and did not chatter. I only went to higher torque because some times I tend to push the edge on maneuvers. [8|]

Reminds me of the old days when R/S Systems increased the resolution and centering of the then analog servos and they chattered quite a bit by them selves. Sure hope I did not offend,keep us posted with your project and the replacement servos Futaba is sending.

The servos that were chattering weren't the Futuba's but one of the other brands. The futuba's ran smooth and quiet but only 40 oz of torque. The other brand that chattered was 80 oz torque. I found that if I held them in my hand and put the very slightest pressure on the servo it began chattering. So I do think it is the R&C that results in the chatter. It might also be the gear train being new and tight. (I don't ever publish the brand of a product that I have problem with but if you need help email I will help you if you have issues) (Legaleaze reasons)

The mfg of the chatter servo tec rep did immediately agree to replace them but he has never called me back eventhough I faxed him the information he requested.

Ok, struts are now mounted made of poplar. Not covered but they do fit. Whew. what a job,, what poor plastic farings. Just working with them they were so brittle they were cracking. But I guess I'll wait to make something better when the gear rips off.

Cover struts. Make spinner nut, buy prop,, install receiver, Cut and extend servo flap leads. Fly,, Getting close guys. [X(]

I'm currently building a stinson as well, and was wondering, when you cut and put on the die-cut leading edges did you have a straight line when looking down the front of the wing. When I stand beside my table and glance down the leading edge it looks like the W-1 through W-4 area is heading up at an angle to W-5, then from W-5 through W-16 everything is nice and straight, and heading downward at a slope. I've double checked all my rib jigs, and assume this is normal and will correct itself once the sheeting, and carving of the leading edge is completed. Am I right, or did I miss something? I've been doing this for a while but this wing is an odd shape.

I will look mine over in the morning and post- I do recall being instructed to remove a "substantial" amount of material from the BOTTOM of the leading edge material (near the outermost wing ribs BEFORE adhering to the outer wind panel ribs.AGAIN I will look over my nearly completed left wing panel Tues AM and post.
