Dub just sent me the Hangar list and he has a SJ .50 in there. I'm thinking about buying it for my Viper. What kind of speeds would that run for sport flying?
Is it touchy on the needle at all? And what kind of prop does it like?

Thanks again for you help.

Destiny:

A SJ 50, actually any Jett "Sports" engine will perform better than anything else out there. Very user friendly, idle foreaver, transition like no other, more power and more rpm than any sports engine you are going to compair it with. But, you gotta remember, its designed as a "Sports" engine. Look at the Jett web site ans see the rpm shown, it will give you that and then some. Follow the prop recommendations. Will put a tt or OS to shame in rpm and power and be user friendly. I start all mine, 35, 50, 60, 90 with a chicken stick cause I dont like to spin them over without fuel, thats just me, I have it down to one or two flips. Gotta have just the right amount of fuel in the cylinder. Now, you are looking for some scoot. If you buy the SJ version and someone else comes out with a LX version, gonna kick your butt bad, real bad. My SJ's now sit in the motor cabinet in favor of the LX as they are installed in go faster sport racing planes. You gotta bring out a full bore racing engine like the Nelson, or Jett racing engilnes to beat me, and they are not legal for our club racilng. Actually if you come out with that viper with a quickee engine, chances are you will still get skunked cause you will be running against a 60LX in a very superior air frame plus outright tretchery. Bottom line, spend a little more money and get a LX version. My 60 turns a 8.5 X 8 apc in the 19K range depending on weather conditions. Fun part, start her up, needle, sit it down and IDLE out to the strip and take off every time, then watch the guys run for the fence or trailer. These engines tend to run foreaver, my 35 is 6 years old and getting stronger. Yet to wear anything out. So, the expensive motor becomes cheep after the first few years. Just make your purchase match what you expect. ENJOY

Destiny the sport jett engines are very strong. They will outperform all other sport engine, last much longer and has second to none customer support. On the viper with the right prop you should see around 140. As rmenke sais the LX version is a good bit stronger. Rmenke I will stick with my Jett Q500 40. It turns a 8.8x8.75 over 19500 at 4500ft elevation on a very hot day.

Sorry... i missed this post somehow......

I think these guys covered it.

The SJ-50 is a very user friendly engine. Runs well, throttles great...... easy to operate.

For sport flying on a Viper, just put a standard APC or MAS 9x7 or 9x8 on it.... figure on 130 mph + easily. Probably a bit more on the +
Alternate good props are the 8.75x8W and 8.8x8.5
