Got the retracts behaving on Saturday so charged the battery and loaded the car ready to go flying on Sunday. Headed for the strip to find light winds straight down the runway and patial cloud so the sun wasn't too much of a problem. I suddenly realise that I've run out of excuses and I am going to have to fly this 17.4lb monster.

Assemble the model and all checks out, no last minute reprieve there! Fire up the motor and head for the strip. Few weeks ago I did some fast runs down the runway so I know that by feeding in some rudder I can keep the plane tracking straight.

Head to the end of the strip, take a deep breathe and start feeding in throttle. This time it's for real! Same pattern as before except keep feeding in the power - no problems with nosing over! Speed builds up and the model starts to lift. Ease in just a little elevator and it's flying. Better yet it's in a steady climb and still heading straight ahead. My concerns as to whether the OS 120AX was enough motor have already been answered, I'm well clear of the treeline and turning into the pattern!

Couple of circuits with the wheels down and I'm starting to feel good about this. Better still the plane is flying level with no trim - time to get the wheels up. With the wheels up there is a slight tendancy to climb, 2 clicks of down trim are all it takes to fix this. Fly a few circuits to get the feel of the thing, no dramas at all!

Drop the flaps, again no nasties, plane slows but still sits nicely. Drop the gear and more of the same. As I've got the flaps and gear down think that maybe its time to try a landing. Ease back on the power and bring it down, only to realise I made my base turn too soon and I'm a tad too high. Ease on a little power and go round, no problems at all. Next approach is better and the FW settles nicely onto the strip, a little long and I run into the longer grass at the end, but I'm down in one place.

Second flight I get a little more adventurous and do loops, rolls and inverted (this is part of the large model inspection for models over 7Kgm in Oz). Again the plane tracks nicely with no bad habits emerging. My heart rate is starting to head back towards more normal numbers. Second landing is also quite respectable, manage to stay out of the long grass this time! A small problem emerges as I taxi back, one of the wheels skews out of line. Turns out that the screw that holds the oleo leg has gone awol! Could have been worse, at least I didn't lose the wheel somewhere out in the paddock.

So, in summary, I'm pretty happy about how the first flights went. I was concerned about how this thing would fly given the weight it came out at, but all in all the model flew very well. I ended up with the CG at 130mm behind the wing/fuse join and right now have no reason to change this at all. The OS120AX (with A 16 x 8 prop) seems to have quite enough grunt to fly the thing, though I may have to hold off on the hovering.

Hope mine will also get up in the sky next week.
I am not happy about the weight and the Saito 170 radial, but I will try first some roll out tests.

Thanks for the great flight report, and congratulations! That's the engine/prop combo I'll be using too. So it's very encouraging.

I got my spinner too this week and I sure agree. I'm (hopefully) attaching a couple of pics. After waiting all that time I'm real disappointed. I'm going to send mine back and request a refund. I'm not sure yet what I'll do for a spinner. maybe contact Dave Platt and see if he'll sell his FW190 spinner separate from his short kit. It'll be off a little but sure better than this thing...

Status: offline 		Skyshark sells an almost perfect shape get the FW 190 D spinner not the fw 190
you will be pleased
it can be cut for 2 or3 blades

My skyshark is pretty accurate. I don't think it is too pointy at all.

Status: offline 		nice flight report, thanks, SO! thats the heavy typhoon flown, flys like a trainer, the bearcat flown, flys and lands superb, now the 190 is favorable, so now, will you give us the benefit of the doubt, and aknowledge we know what we are doing? we can only get better, and already, we are doing just that, see the line up this summer. its STUNNING, with your help, we will get rid of the niggles, but, the things are designed to fly, and fly they do

Well, let me say first of all ,that Redback ( aka Terry ) is being somewhat modest with his desciption of the FW190's flight and particularly ground handling !

Both his landing were, in my opinion, excellent, the 190 has a rock solid look about it on the approach, nice rate of descent and the wheels barely breathing on the strip. Excellent flying !The run out was long, with that weight translated in momentum, but manageable. The take-offs were very good too. In flight performance is smooth and fast. All in all , an excellent package.

Off course, I'm a bit jealous of all this since the 190 runs rings around my KMP Spitfire when it comes to ground handling !! However, let's see if the Spit will take some honours in the air. My Mk.XIV has the OS 120 AX too, but is considerably lighter at 14.2 lbs.......we will have to see. Let the battle begin.

the US market will be differant to the UK market, but some pictures of the new birds are already in circulation, others are having a re-vamp, its going to be a good year

Status: offline 		Hey nicostoffi I have a 170R3 for my willshobby 190 what ar'nt you happy about concerning the engine ?.
And what size Prop are you running on it.
Other threads I have been watching are running master air 18x6 classic props and are pleased with the
results so I've ordered one for my set up.
Also ordered a keleo ring exhaust and from all reports this seems to improve the performance as well.
I to am concerned about the performance with the weight some of these birds are coming in at but saito
do say for 1.20 to 1.50 size models so I'll be watching with interest how yours performs.

the keleo exhaust and a APC 16x8 prop.8 kg - 17,6lbs - weight.

I think it's not enough to fly.
Maybe I change the prop to APC 15x8 for more power.

If weather means good, I will test the FW 190 for a short roll out on our field this sunday.

First at saturday the KMP Bearcat engine will have their break-in
