What would be a good 3D plane to use with a Zenoah G38 ?

I asked this same question several months ago and never got a reply. That pretty much answered my question.

You might try a 120 size ultrastick. About the only plane I can think of that has a lot of wing area to carry the weight and still light enough to give you unlimited vertical. You could also try the large 80" Morris profile. The g-38 is a good engine, just heavy for the power it puts out. You could also have the g-38 converted by rcign. That would open up several more options for 3D.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll look into the Ultra stick and Morris profile.

I didn't mean to be short in the above post. The problem with the G38 and 3D is that you have to have a plane under 14 lbs to get the thrust ratio high enough. Since the engine weighs about 5 lbs, that leaves very little room for airframe and gear. Then you have to worry about wing loading....

A few years back we were building a stick type plane with an 80" foam wing and box fuse. It was designed to use the G38 and weighed about 15lbs. They flew great and would do just about anything in the book, but you just couldn't hover it because of the weight. The last one I built would go vertical from takeoff up to about 400 ft, then lose momentum. I've been looking for something to build that would be a little lighter. So far, the only thing I've seen is Ryan's Rebel, featured in RCM a few months back. There's a few threads on here talking about the plane, so you may want to check them out.

A guy at my club had an Ultra Stick 120 with a G-38 in it and it did not have unlimited vertical. It was a sled. Forgetd the G-38 for 3D.

Kenny,

Joebob beat me to it. I designed the Ryan's Rebel to be easy to build, good flying and light. My Ryan's Rebel weighs in at 12 lbs 4 oz. with a G-38. Will hover at about 50%-60% throttle or so. Only problem is the Rebel was not designed for 3D, but use the same airframe with over sized control surfaces and you should be fine for 3D. Maybe shorten the fuse a bit also.

Ryan
