Hey guys, theres a boxxer in the mail heading towards me, Ive read the online instructions and the bottom wings arnt removeable..which is a bit of a problem. I have a small car so its hard to transport a plane like this. Is there a way I could make the lower wing removeable with out changing the wing span, or screwing with the upper wing? Its already a pain in the rudder to transport m 28inch foamie!

I was thinking about putting small 1 inch hard wood dowels inside the carbon wing tubes and then drilling a hole through the wing and tubes so you could put a screw through it. It wouldnt need a very large screw, my Chip Hyde Double Vision uses one 2.5mm screw on each wing, and it is much much larger than the Boxxer. Two 1.5mm screws on the top and bottom would be strong enough to hold the wing on.

It would take a little weight off the finished model because you wouldnt need to epoxy the wings to the fuse, it would be easier to repair but I am worried that by not glueing the wing to the fuse, I would takeing away from the torsional strength of the frame.. I might have to drill some holes and put some hard wood alignment dowels in the fuse so it always lines up.

Does anyone have any ideas or am I just crazy?
Cant wait till the mail man shows up I got an oldschool special edition OS.61 and im not afraid to use it!

First off, the tubes the wings are mounted on are quite small. See pic #10 below.

I'd say the mod for removable wings would be pretty easy. If it were me, I'd do this...

First off, glue the wing tubes into one wing panel with epoxy.

Make a small plate for a 14x20 blind nut from ply that fits inside the root rib arrea, and touches top and bottom. It will need to glue inside the wing, to the ply root rib with epoxy. It will need to be glued in a spot where it can touch (and be glued to) the spars or tubes you just glued in.

You will need a second ply plate glued inside the opposite panel with a hole corresponding to the blind nut, to pass the 1/4x20 nylon bolt through.

You will want to use a bolt with an allen wrench head or hex head (not a slotted screw), as an offset ball driver will be needed to screw the bolt in, more than likely.

Do the struts and top wing as the manual says.

It will not be as strong as a glued on wing, but I THINK it will work.

Again, I THINK. I can't really promise or guarantee anything, as this has not been tried.

Thanks Frank for the tips! Keep in mind the Boxxer wingspan is only 42" so really it should not be hard to fit in most cars. You could of course try to fit it in your car prior to doing any mods. Then if it fits, you would build as per the instructions.
