Kelly,

What is the square tube for that runs down the spine of the planes? Is it a stiffener since the turtledeck is foam?

Busy couple of weeks at work and life!

I stripped all the hardware from the planes last week in preparation for final sanding.
I also glassed in the air ducts for the engines and ran the fillets around the cowl/ply
parts.

I did the first major shop cleaning in preparation for the covering to start soon.

Today I set up a sanding table in the garage outside the shop and got started on the
sanding. I should have the fuses ready by Sunday.

I will post pictures when I start covering.

Looks like I will start covering tonight unless something comes up.

I have the 2 fuses sanded to 400 grit and the wings are in the garage
being worked on.

Moved my glass top down to the work shop and covered the other table
in a soft sheet material.

The covering is here along with a new iron and sock. I will be trying
Monokote again for the first time in 20 years or so. The last few covering
jobs have been done with Ultracote. I love the way the Ultracote goes down
but the lighter colors are somewhat translucent and you can see the color
of the wood grain through the white.

I purchased 3 - 25' rolls of covering, Jet White, Royal Blue and True Red and
one 6' roll of Cub Yellow.

I've been lurking on the thread and thought I'd show myself. You build 'em good, kregan.

I like Ultracote better, tho. I think it sticks and shrinks better.

Thanks OK2Fly!

I decided to start my plane first so any mistakes can be corrected on Kurt's plane.

I had to do the fuse bottom and side in 3 pieces. The covering is not wide enough
to go from side to side. I have the lightening holes in the bottom so I can't seem
the covering over the holes.

I started by cutting in the tail wheel and rear hatch area. Then I laid one piece in the bottom
center. I did one side and stopped for the night. Monokote is a bit harder then Ultrakote!

But if you take your time and work the air out it is fine. I hope it turns out nice but this won't
be a DSP quality covering job!

Honestly it is not that hard to deal with. You just have to take your time
and work the air out as you press the covering down to the wood.

With Ultracote I could reheat and the air bubbles would disappear somehow.
I guess the Ultra would lift up in large area's and the air would escape.

With monokote once you stick it down you can't go back over it without creating
lots of smaller air pockets and the air gets trapped. It seems as if the Mono sticks
better and that is why the air gets trapped.

My main reason for choosing Mono over Ultra is that for fully sheeted surfaces
the Mono will not bubble up in the sun if applied correctly. We will see if I do it
right!

BTW, the orange plane in my avatar is Ultracote.

That's the primary reason I use Ultracote. Air bubbles magically disappear when the heat gun is applied! But, yes, Monokote does not lift in the sun. I guess you can't win 'em all...

Are you going with the same scheme for both planes?

What kind of iron is that black one that you are using? I see alot of people using them so I am looking into getting one because my Tower Hobbies one is getting on my nerves.
