Very nice, I like the clean lines of the scheme.

Rainy day = slow day for me. Time to work on the plane!

I ended up putting balsa cap strips top of the 1/8"
ply root rib. This will make a better blend line on top.
On the bottom I just have to keep test fitting and sanding
to make it just right.

The only quality epoxy I had on hand was 3 hour... so that
is what I used on the root rib.

I also whipped up a clamp to glue on the LE and TE
of the wings. This eliminates having to put all that tape
on and then peel it all off. Without the tape in the way
I can scrape off any extra glue at the joint.

Built the razor plane today and started to shape the
leading and training edges.

This razor plane is great! I have to find the original
poster of the plans and send him a heads up!

If you can find the original poster of the plans, I'd like to get them and buiid one for myself. Does it use standard single edge razor blades?

Tnx, Jim

P.S. I'm really enjoying your build thread and am learning a lot.

Thank you, and yes, standard single edge blades.

I posted the plans on page3, post #64.
His name is on the plan.

Made a second razor plane with a wider throat so I
can have one set deep and one set shallow.

All 4 stabs now have the root rib installed and the
leading and trailing edges installed and shaped.

I was able to the LE and TE on one 1 wing.

I am about to set up servo placement on both wing and stab. What the heck. Too many choices and not much guidance.
I am setting up for IMAC only. Only two servos on wing and one on stab and very little bevel.
Tapered aileron or straight?
Start aileron how far from fuse?
Should this be parallel to the fuse?
How far should the servo be from hinge line?
Any input or opinions would be appreciated.

I've been flying mine for the whole 2007 season now- it's great. Here's my advice:

-Bevel the surfaces for 3D. It won't hurt a thing and not doing it will make it more difficult to sell someday if you choose to do so.
-Taper the ailerons as per the plans.
-I left my ailerons exactly like on the plans- but on my next one I'd extend them in about 3" or so like Kelly did.
-Not sure what your question is (Should this be parallel to the fuse). If you are talking about the inboard edge of the aileron then it's just a personal choice. I make mine parallel to the tip.
-Distance from servo to hinge line not that critical. Set it up so that a 3" or 4" control rod will work. That's not 3-4" from servo to hinge- get a 3-4" long control rod, add the ball links to the end and then measure out that distance from your control horn (hopefully it is near the hingeline) to the output shaft on the servo. That will determine where to place the servo.
-Opinions? Hurry up and get it done. You'll be glad you did.

Dave

You can check out www.edge540.com
it is a build for a Carden 540. Bob has a few drawings that show exactly how he set up the servos with measurements etc.
Even if you opt to do something different, he gives you a good starting point.
I believe if you use a 2.5" pro link rod with rocket city type hardware/ball links you will end up with a overall control rod of 4"
+/- with adjustability
Most builders now set the control hard point about 1/4" less than the length of the servo arm they are using.
For example. With a 1.25" servo arm, place the control hardpoint 1" from the center line of the servo output shaft.
This gives better geometry through the full travel of the servo.

Thanks Kelly. Between those plans and your excellent pictures I'm in business. I always love using tools I've built.

Before and after trick or treating I was able to get some
work done today.

I finished gluing on the LE and TE material to the main wings.

Back to the frame....

I cut the lightening holes in the firewall and drilled engine
mounting holes. We will be using ZDZ Super 160's, the carb
goes through the firewall. Dave supplied a template for the
mounting holes and carb cut out.

I also lightened the upper motor box and lower motor box.
On the upper box I left the center section in place so I have
a place to mount the ignition.

Next up, assemble the motor box's.

Mark786, if you need me to take measurements I can.

Kelly,
Thanks, I am past that now. I have the fuse boxed and all foam sheeted. I have more work on the wings then it is time to set incidence.
