It appears that a race is going to break out on 10-13 at my field in Monroe, NC. It looks like we will have quite a few pilots.

We will be racing Club 40, Quickie 25, AT-6's, and Race What You Bring. There will be some AMA 424 planes as well. I'm getting a flier together and will post it shortly.

Don,
I am planning to bring a truck full of planes and people again.
I should have the C-40 plane ready by then.

Vic,

Really glad you're coming. We have people coming from Mt. Pleasant, Charlotte Aeromodelers, Rowan County, and other local clubs. As well as the usual suspects. The field is in good shape despite the drought and ready for action. Now I need to practice a little more.

If you have a hard hat, please bring it to the race with you. I have some extras, but it's looking like people need to being their own.

Weather is looking good for Saturday. It should be a lot cooler though.

Even with the drought, the runway and takeoff pad are in pretty decent shape.

We will have a number of first time 3 polers. There will be some orientation practice flights to get people ready to race.

I think we are going to use FAI style racing and scoring so that people can see how they do and improve with experience.

I have plenty of Sky Raider Mach II solid color ARF kits on hand. Bring your favorite payment method (cash or credit card).

What time?
Can you post some C-40 rules or are they someplace easy to find?

Nitro test flying will start at 9:00. We hope to start racing at 10:00, but it looks like a number of people will be getting here around that time. So it may be 11:00 before we actually start running heats.

We also have a number of people coming who have never raced on a 3 pole course. Plus the trees that bound the field will take a flight or two to get comfortable with. So orientation will be part of the activities.

There are enough people coming this time that I can't afford to feed everyone for free. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for $2.

The RCPRO version of the rules is at Club 40 Rules

I apparently cut the ethernet connection to my house while putting up a tent for the race on Saturday, 10-13-2007.

So my servers are not accessible right now. The race is ON, so please come on.

You can map to my house/field at:

606 Ivah Lee Way
Monroe, NC 28110

My cell number is 704-968-2881

To Don and all the people I met today,
The two fellows who rode with me and my son commented the whole two hour ride home on how good a time we had and how we can work it out to have a C-40 race up in our area.
The racing was awsome! No mid airs but super close action. Don has contiually told me I would like doing this and he was right. He was a great host and fun competitor. After spending an hour helping us 3-pole nubies get set-up he even let me beat him racing. I can't think of more to ask from a guy. .
A bit about my Sky Raider,
The plane flew perfect. I am usually heavy on the sticks and got "coached" to tame it down...like alot. This helped me more than I could imagine. The plane handled like a trainer when I slowed it down and was as lively as the T-6 and Slo Q-500 planes I have. I am very pleased with it as both a sport plane and a racer.
When you get another one in the air at the same time it is a blast to chase each other around.

Don,
A special thanks to your family for hosting all of us and to your neighbors for tolerating us.
I know all three of us will be back.

Thanks for coming Vic. We really enjoyed having everyone and it was a lot of fun. The smiles make it all worthwhile.

All of you 3 pole newcomers did very well to not have any crashes. Some close ones, but all of the planes went home in one piece and ready to race another day. And with a little less throw for smoother flights on the course.

We wound up losing some people to the Bank of America 500 race at Lowes Motor Speedway, but we are making progress in building a core racing group. I'm looking forward to some races at other clubs. James Ross and his father are going to set up their field in Jacksonville, NC for racing and we will have another place to race in NC.

Here are some group photos with some of the pilots.

While we did not have enough people to have judges around the course, we did get some times for the 1.5 mile 348'x348'x100' course.

James Barr had the fast time at 1:27.88 for a clean 10 lap race with a Club 40 plane. The second fastest time was Tommy Tomlinson with a 1:32.68. My time was not even below 1:40. I was flying conservatively and not pushing real hard. But it was a nice comfortable pace for the course size.

Dave Keats flew a 424 plane and had a 1:06. James flew a JETT Super Sport powered Quickie and his time was either 00:50:xx or 00:58:xx ... We're not sure if the 00:50:xx was a 9 or 10 lap time. I personally think it was the 00:50:xx time. And that bears out what my thinking was about having a 1:00.00 breakout time for the 1.5 mile course.

Thunder Tiger GP25 powered House of Balsa T-6 Texans were flown on the course, and it seemed just right for them. After seeing them on this course, I think that keeping the T-6 class and possibly switching to the OS 25LA engine might be a good idea. There are quite a few T-6 and AT-6 planes around and they do well on smaller fields like mine.

I want to thank Don and his wife for the hospitality and making us feel welcome at their home yesterday. Don has invested a lot of money and a lot of his time to promote the racing. The word is finally getting out that this is a lot of fun.

The race yesterday was a big learning curve for the new comers. Tommy Thomasson picked up quickly on how it was done. Don let him fly one of his planes just to see if he liked racing. I believe We will see Tommy race again.

Earlier this year, I took a Q500 plane with a Nelson on it just to see if I could fly the short course. The Nelson is much too fast. This time I brought a Q500 plane with a 10 year old JETT super sport 40. Turning 19,500 on the ground. I went 2 wide laps getting the plane trimmed, then got down on the course. My time would have been around 45 seconds if it had been in trim. This was also much too fast for the course. I don't think we timed the 424 planes. I would guess it would be around 1:10.

I enjoyed meeting all the new guys. Very enjoyable to be around and hope to race with all of you again.

Thanks again Don. Looking forward to the next race.

James

Don - Thanks for everything yesterday . . . hosting the race, lunch, providing club-40 demo planes, and all the coaching. I had a great time! Yesterday was my first three pole race . . . I loved it. I really enjoyed everyone I met and I picked-up a bunch of ideas. Can't wait for the next get-together. I was pleased with my flying even though Vic beat me in club-40 and HOB t-6's.

You did a great job making everyone feel at home and welcome.

I am looking forward to the next race. Please let me know what I can do to help. - Seth
