Mark,

I am still waiting on my Transmitter.

Now that sucks. I hope it shows up soon and you get some good weather to go along with it.

No. I'll let you look at the plane though. Just make sure you bring a drool bucket.

I just talked to Dave and he is still awaiting his new 9303 radio. He's bummed but again our weather has not been that great.

I got my transmitter! During my wait, I decided to change power delivery to the Spectrum Rx's as I wanted to ensure power never gets below reboot values. So, I purchased the servocity powerboards and seperately provide power to the servos and Rx. The installation is tight but hopefully it will prove reliable. I will be doing this with all of my giant scale planes.

I do have all the programming done for first flight now I just have to wait for weather. This time of year its either very cold or very cold and windy. First, decent day I'll get it out.

David.

Thanks, David - glad to hear you got your radio.
Do you happen to have a reference (url) for the servocity powerboards? I've been to their website but can't find it.

LeeHop,

The powerboard is difficult to find on their site. Here is the direct link: http://servocity.com/html/servo_power_boards.html

I have attached a couple of diagrams that show my setup. The setup shows the switch after the battshare but it would be better to use two switches immediately after the batteries. I did this arrangement as I wanted to save switch cost and weight. Also, the switches I am using are Fromeco Badger.

A couple more comments on this......I felt compelled to wire it all this way as power delivery (IMO) is essential for GS flying. The Rx's that I am using are the latest version of Spektrum/JR with the fast connection recovery (reconnects on last two known good frequencies). Even with that I still wanted to make sure that the Rx never dipped below 3.5V. If you try to measure this with a voltmeter you will never see it as the sample frequency is not near enough. Also, realize that JST connectors are only good for 3A's continous even though they can probably reach 15-20A for a short burst without meltdown. Nevertheless, with five 5955's you can easily reach 10A to 15A. All-in-all, for $18 the Powerboard is a good solution and offers some great advantages.

David.

nice job Dave and thanks for posting this info. I looked at those boards and they are simple and economical. Definately looks like a good addition to any large plane.

I'm not a big fan of the powerboards, regulators, Li-pos, and all that rigamaroll. I like to keep it simple. 1 RX, 2600mah 6V NIMH-RX, 1100mah 4.8V NIMH-ign. I've seen more wrecks and heard about more wrecks caused by all of the fancy pancy electronics that go into an larger scale plane. I've never had a problem in 6yrs. with any of my set-ups in my profiles. If you are are running 4 servos on the wings, 3 on the rudder, simply add another RX pack and go. But all the regulators and powerboards are nothing but a nucance, money vacuum, and add weight. Just my .02.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this because it's "not safe". But in my book it is safe, simple, and it's effective.

Iowa, I generally agree and don't use any of those either but this is a different item in my opinion. Check out the hyperlink and take a close look. What this little item does is allow you to run heavier current wire directly from the batteries and switches to a central distribution point other than the rx. You can do the same thing by making your own harnesses if you want. On my 40% plane I did just that so that ganged servos all got power fed from mini deans connectors and appropriate wire. Way better than trying to use servo wire for big servo currents.

IowaSilvia,

I respect that opinion and when you find something that works you should stick with it, like you have. I try to adhere to the KIS principle: Keep It Simple and believe-it-or-not this might be the most simple I have accomplished to date. So, I am making progress. I went with A123 batteries so I could get rid of regulators. I love that. As an electrical engineer I really like soldering things up, wiring, and general messing around with this stuff so I can easily get carried away.

David.
