home built Formula Off Road Terra Climber
Hi,
After seeing these cars (Formula Off Road) on eurosport years ago I knew. I want to have a RC car like this. After that years passed until I saw a topic about Thorbob. I saw the axle of a Mad Force and after seeing the construction of the car I knew it was possible for me to build it.
About 1 year ago I bought me a Mad Force and reluctantly dismantled it. After drawing the chassis plates I ordered a factory to mill a bearing block etc.
The chassis plates are laser cut. I modeled the body parts in UG NX and sent the prt files to China. In Shanghai the parts were CNC milled from solid ABS blocks.
Also I had to buy noumerus parts to complete the car.
Only thing is, I don't dare to drive the car because I might hurt it, and thereby hurt my wallet.
I tried to start my own brand, but for me that turned out to be too expensive. Factory's show no interest whatsoever. So here it is.
Here are some pictures of the car my car is based on. It's not a replica but I used it as a guide.
Here is the model. The roll cage needs to be painted and I have to apply some stickers.
Specs:
Formula Off Road 1/8th semi scale nitro powered car
Name Terra Climber
3 speed gear box
3,5CC nitro motor (Kyosho GX-21) with pull start
Paddle tires
Chassis van 3mm thick aluminium, 6063 T6
0-100 km/h, 2,5 sec. (haha)
mass, 4,8 kg ready to go
length about 65cm
6 punts roll cage from 5mm brass pipe 1mm thick. hard soldered.
With buggy to see the scale.
Look at the rear tires, 4 wheel steering to make thighter turns.
I think it turned out great. I hope you like it to. Please respond and let me know what you think.
I'm drawing my next project, will show that to you to in about a year.
Regards
Leo

The vehicle is not at all my cup of tea but WOW,that's great work there!
Can you tell us how much it has cost you and any chance of some body off pictures?

That's nice job well done. Can we see some off body pic's please. And you know what that is right? Here in the states we would call a sand dragster, and in the photo's it looks like they are using it to climb hills. Have you seen the sand dragsters they have? They run I think a 1/8 th of a mile race flat out on the sand they run stock and all kinds of them, your's looks like a jeep that grill you made is the classic jeep grill. Nice job [sm=thumbup.gif] would sure like to see the drive line and power plant.

This is called a formula offroader. They are mainly run by people in Russia and Switzerland where people use them for hill climbing competitions. Search youtube for "formula offroad" there are some sweet vids of flips and driving on water if you search.

RE: home built Formula Off Road Terra Climber
Here some pics of the inside and bottom.
You can see the car is based on a Mad Force. Just had to relocate the RC box and muffler.
You can see I had to lengthen the car and add a mechanism to create 4 wheel steering.
The small blocks and steering levers were milled by myself, the bearing block is factory made.
Inside
Again
Bottom
Total costs, about 1800 us dollars. Materials only.

RE: home built Formula Off Road Terra Climber
I have driven it with front wheel steering only so far. It handled well but had a too big turning radius. That's why I have added the rear wheel steering. It climb's well but the engine had only about 5 tanks of fuel so I didn't push it hard. Next week I will break it in further and maybe even video some action.
I'm thinking of removing the gear box and make a fixed gearing for better power to climb.

That is badass dude. I love watching the videos of the real things run and have always wanted to my a RC version. I can't wait to see a video of you actually doing some hillclimbs with it.
I just might have to get in gear and build me one now. Mine will definately be brushless electric though
