Well, Guys,

It has finally happened. My work schedule and the weather came together today, and I got to get the maiden flight in and a few more.

I got to the field this evening and was there myself. Winds blowing about 12mph and 70 degrees. I almost called off if it wasn't for everything working out work wise. I gave the plane one more going over as I assembled it. Did the range checks and took some pics. It was now the time I have waited all winter for.

I got the engine started and taxiied out to get it in the air. I am really pleased with the way the plane flies. At 43 1/2 lbs, this planes with a DA 150 and the Greeves pipes does not know the difference. I was surprised how quickly the plane broke ground and climbed out. As Reza and others have said, there seems to be no limit to the vertical climb of this combo.
I got it leveled out and made a few passes with some rolls, snaps, and loops. This thing hold a good line. Other then a few minor travel adjustments, This this is on rails. Very solid. The snaps are solid...Very solid. After a 10 minute flight, I landed to give the plane a once over and nothing was found that was any issue. Got two more flights in and I played with some rolling circles, rolling circles with point stops. Other then a few tweek on the travels, it is smooth.
In 3D, I wangt to work with the CG a bit, bit I was able to harrier and harrier rolls without problems. Torque rollong was pedictable, but I need to adjust my throttle curve alittle here.

As for the DA 150 and Greeves pipe combo. My fears were put to rest quickly about a lousy midrange. This thing was sweet. Very smooth transition. I am happy as H*ll here. The header length and a Mejlik 32x10 is looking like it is perfect for me. With DA coming out with the new 170 soon, I don't think you could go wong.

Overall, This thing is sweet and QQ deserves an "AttaBoy" on this one. Great plane, QQ.

This planes was bought because I always wanted the 3W Yak, and thought this was a good settle to try QQ design. Besides...The price is right. I plan on using this airframe to get fimilar with 2.4 which I will soon be switching to. I just need to get some questions answered.

Overall, I am very happy tonight and look forward to getting some time on the plane.

As some know, I am a builder and have not been interested in ARF's much, I just had to try. If it would ever come a time that I could not build or needed to get something it the air quick. I hope these are still around.

Wished I had some video. Maybe another time. Hard to soot video and fly the plane at the same time.

Just alittle of my 2 cents worth.

Vann,

As you can see from above posting, I finally got to fly. What a plane.

Hope you have been flying up a storm with your plane.

Great report and pictures Joe. Thank you very much for taking time and giving us the details.
I knew power won't be an issue with Greeves!

Beautiful flying machine too

Thanks again,
Reza

Vann,

Yes, it felt good to put the plane into the air instead of just looking at it in the basement.

I took my DA 150 off of my 260, being already broke in, and just added the pipes. I was surprised that the engine ran so good through out the whole throttle range. I did not touch a thing, and I always run my low ends alittle on the rich side, but this did not need me to touch the needles. I am totally happy with the way it runs. My buddy was out with me today and he was surprised how good it ran also.

As for flying, I too have "Up" trim in the stab for flying, but I feel that the plane is a bit nose heavy. When I do harriers and Eleavators, it want to drop the nose too much. In my opinion. I am going to try to add some tail weight soon. Overall the plane is flying good. I am balanced about the mid balance range that QQ suggests in the building manual. I will have to at least try to see what it doeswhen I add some tail weight.

Well, hope to get more flying in soon.

Keep in touch.

Vann,
Sounda like you are ready to get back into the air.

I too, feel that my plane is alittle on the nose heavy side, and will change the C/G some to try. But not much because it take very little to hold inverted. I think the change will help the 3D'n more overall.
Added some graphics too yesterday, so now the plane looks a bit different.

Yes, I am going to Joe NAll. I leave in 2 week today. Can't wait. Are you going ?

Hi guys. I am about to recieve my 120"ARC and was wondering if there were any modifications you thought would have been nice to have during the construction of your ARF's. Without the covering, I will be able to make changes or add special components (lights) very easily.
Adam

Man, So far, the only thing that I would suggest and I was informed by Vann, is to not let the hatch slide under the cowling like the have. I ended up just trimming the cowling a bit. The cowling rubbing on the hatch will rub a hole into the hatch plastic.

I would also suggest to change out any blind nuts. I had a few that would just allow the screws to not tighten down. So consider changing all the screws and blind nuts to 4-40 and 6-32. To me they are easier to have extras on hand.

Overall the basic construction is to give a solid airframe. I don't know what engine combo or radio setup you plan on using, but what I have is great. But I will put a DA 170 on it when it comes out, but with a DA 150 and Greeves pipes the plane climbs straight up while doing snaps and does not stop. The 170 will be insane, but I will be using the engine in an upcoming project so it will be broken in for that project.

Good luck with your project. You will like it. The plane flies like it is on rails.

I would definately trim the top rear of cowl off,I would look at changing blinds also especially at canopy attachments,I don't like the big holes in fuse where the 6 screws go,the wood is a little soft to keep screws tight, wick plenty of ca or change !IMHO
