Continued...

Pic 13. The cockpit sides are the wrong angle, possibly because of the short cockpit, but some cutting is required.

Pic 14. Cardboard template for the instument panel comes together. This was used to create the styrene backing plate for the instruments.

Pic 15. Dry fit of the instument panel.

Pic 16. Dry fit #2 with styrene backing plate in position.

Pic 17. Lots of visualization required here... this is V1 of the canopy slide. The idea is to open and close the canopy using the rear post and leave the two supports on either side of the cockpit to slide freely. Imagine the rear top sheeting on top of this assembly and the bolt protruding up through the sheeting to connect with the rear of the canopy. The kevlar line runs around the end roller and back to a sail winch servo, similar to a closed loop sheet system on model yachts. It worked but the sail winch servo is a 4oz beast of a thing so I scrapped it.

Pic 17. This is V2 of the canopy slide. After briefly considering going back to air for this, I tried a simple servo actuator including this lite-ply plate...

Pic 18. Which will actuate this slide via a standard pushrod snake and insert. The top of the 1mm styrene slide will be fixed to the canopy.

It works pretty well on the bench, I''m hoping the same will be true in the airframe.

Thats about it for now, the weather has finally broken here and flying is on for the weekend!

More as it happens, your comments and suggestions are always welcome...

Cheers!

Goose

hi everyone. Just got my P51 TF kit. getting things togeather to build it. One question. I have a twin in line 60 from super tigre. two 60 size engines in line for 120. Do you think this will handle the P51. I have the engine all set up to run on gas. It came out of another big P51, but i don't know who made it. Going to try and find a exhast that will hook to the P51. I saw one that a guy made and it worked really great.
Just came to a standstill on a ziroli b25.. Big job. also have a DC3/C47, but that is on the burner for later date. Have enough war birds . Everything i have is a war bird. I have the retracts for the P51 and the spinner. I keep picking up material every time i go to the hobby shop. Wife says, just what i need another plane.. lol.. She has been great about my hobby. She bought me a new radio last Christmas. Hope to get another one this Christmas..
Keep watching your build. Hope mine looks as good when done..

Hi..

I am embarrassed to admit that the glorious Mustang has not been touched since mid April, which coincides with the winter thaw and subsequent opening of the Stetson Flyers field.

After destroying my Edge 540 in a rather unceremonious inverted 'arrival' I have been working flat out to A: Get flying again quickly and B: Put together a warbird for last weekends event. I slightly kit bashed an H9 Corsair which is fun and by this long weekend, I should have all the interesting bits worked out, including learning to fly the thing!

The good news is that the P51 is back on the bench, and whilst progress is generally slower in the spring/summer/autumn as compared to the 'building season' (4 months buried in snow), I am making a big effort to include build time with everything else.

I'm really not sure about your twin idea.. someone who knows this will chime in.

You said "Have enough warbirds. Err, you might want to see a doctor about this...

Mine is exceptional with regard to this hobby, we are lucky men.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Goose

Hey BG...

*sigh* Nope. No sooner had I cleared the bench to resume working on this, I became part of a team charged with building a scale flying model of the Silver Dart for the Aviation Museum... Canada's claim to first powered flight.

At 1/7th scale, it has a 7' wingspan and needs to fly late February to coincide with the anniversary. I had intended to do the drawings only, however a large part of the construction is now in my hands.

All that to say bad news for the Mustang... for a few weeks anyways.

Fear not, the mighty '51 is not gathering dust somewhere in a corner. As soon as it starts again, pics and posts will be here.

Keep an eye out for a powerplant change

Cheers!

Hey Benny...

Thanks for the bump in the thread!

Nope.

Now the Silver Dart is finished and out of my house, the H9 Corsair bash and TWM Ultimate are on the bench simultaniously for the fast approaching summer flying season.

The Mustang will be back on the bench in autumn of this year and my plan is to have it flying for the 2010 season.

No more interuptions!

Cheers mate

Hi guys...

Anyone still watching?

Projects run hot and cold for me, whether its time, money, enthusiasm or whatever... but the Mustang is back in the queue (albeit 2 years later )

I have four projects for winter, so don't hold your breath on this... weekly updates in effect.

This week...

  • I spent some time looking at the build to date and re-establishing where I am at.
  • I changed my mind on a couple of things including going back to air for the retracts and doors instead of the Lado solution (due to cost).
  • I was reminded how much a pain in the butt the turtle deck is and will have to spend some time figuring that out.
  • Colour scheme will be P51-D 44-13573 Isobel III flown by Flt. Lt. Jack Cleland (RNZAF) as he was the only NZ pilot to fly the Mustang in combat with the 363rd FS, 357th FG.
  • Given that this scheme is entirely painted, I will be doing panels the old way versus Flitemetal but will use FM where appropriate.

Cheers

Goose

Hi Goose!

Yep, still here. Waiting for Tony Howard to finish his new cowl design... looking very good and I just must have one. Haven't been building very much as going through some tough times with divorce... Will be a good project to keep my mind off sad things once the worst is over and done... Have made minor improvements on my Stang like functional gun-hatches that will hide charging sockets and switches.

Good to hear you're at it again, mate!!

Benny
