Goose the lower left picture shows the angle and it is bolted to canopy at same angle as the slide member when in the track. Angle flanges are not wide enough or heavy enough to make the angle to slide in one piece so another wedge shaped piece was cut to sit on top to make joiner. You need access through bottom to do this, glue wedge in with just enough glue to hold it together. After it's set up remove screws and pull slides out then use the solvent to weld it all together then canopy cement to finish exposed edges. It's real clean when finished and strong for what it is. You can bolt canopy back in or glue it and use bolts to hold it while it dries. I went to all that trouble because if you take brace off, canopy will spread and it's holding the shape at this point and is support when open.

To get strength I made that angle out of a heavy I beam so I could drill and tap it for the 2-56 X 3/16" screws that hold things together. Front of canopy lip will have a 5/16 strip of styrene glued under it with about 1/8" exposed to fit under front screen when closed, for alignment and keep air out thus no lifting/no worry. I'm very happy with how it came out Leroy

Hey Leroy...

Nice job!

How did you make all your switches and levers?

Hi v6goose. the switches are made from 16 ga. aluminum wire. I have a pair of bare terminal pliers that will flatten the end of wire what ever length you want and then I taper the sides with a micro flat file that makes the toggle, mine are about 3/16" long. I make the ring at base by punching out 3/16" x .030 thick styrene and drill holes in center that fit wire snugly and slide them up to toggle and a tiny drop of thin CA binds them, shake off excess glue. You can bend toggle to be off / on when installed, they are glued in whatever with canopt cement from back side.

All the other parts are made from styrene sheets of various thicknesses. Trim dials are punched out with leather punch and 3 stacked up for height and bonded with solvent cement that weldes this stuff together. Eievator is cut out on scroll saw with a raised ring on top(smaller) and edges are 1/2 hole punched to serate edge. Once you get going stuff just comes to you.I'll be glad to help you on spacific things if I can. I used pictures to guide me along, they really help Leroy

advice

does anyone know the largest diameter prop that could be used on a top flite P51 with the 85" wingspan?

i am referring to issues of clearance.

i am planning to use an engine that uses a 30 x 10 prop,
i do not know if this will clear it.

Just curious but what size engine will swing a 30x10 and fit within the TF P51 cowl? I'm assuming there isn't any kind of gearing involved?

Are you using a BELT DRIVE?
Have a club member with a G62 using a 22" prop.

No
No belt drive
Do you think a 30 inch prop is too big? For this plane?

Honest answer, yes. I'm flying one with a DA50 and 22x10 prop. I've seen mostly 50cc - 62cc engines mounted in the TF P-51. I would think to swing a 30 inch prop would require an engine way over 100cc.

Good point. Didn't consider electric. But can it really spin a 30x10 prop?

Not sure about the rimfire(perhaps), but I have seen an AXI motor that can.

Do you think clearance would be an issue with a 30 inch prop?

I'd be suprised if a 100cc engine can turn a 30x10 with any kind of RPM. But then again you won't need to. A TF P51 with a 100cc engine will be a rocket. I think it's way to much engine. Even a 85cc would be overkill.

it has 12 hp,
p51 is reinforced
there is fiberglass in the wing center section, i have stiffen the stabs, there is tight linkage and titanium servos, i think it should handle it.
the DA 100 has 9.8 hp and turns a 28 x 10 prop

i can probably put in a 24 x 16     4 blade zinger prop

It's the newly announced DA100 inline twin? Spinning a 4 blade will definitely be cool. The 24x16 should be okay for ground clearance, not sure on the 28x10.

It won't be a rocket, it'll be a pile of rubble at the end of the runway and it will not turn a 30" prop. Cripes a 170CC will only turn a32" 3 blade.

"What !, did this thread die too ?, Gotta geter fired up again.

Got the rivets and lines in my plane and it's ready to paint, just waiting for humidity to drop and air temp to get in the 70"s. Finished my instrument pannel, Had to make my own gauges. Working on a 4 blade static prop for it.

Hope to see some of you back. Leroy
