Anybody think an OS 91 4 stroke would be just as strong as the Saito 100? Problem I'm having, I really don't want to spend $350.00 for a saito. Also It is very hard to find a used saito. RC universe has a ton of OS engines for sale. I'm almost ready to install an engine on my Miss America. I could lean towards a OS 2 stroke, a new one, their not too pricey and from what I've heard the new OS 2 strokes sounds very nice, almost like a four stroke sound.

Any Opinions out there?

Thanks!

I have flown one with a Saito 100 and it's a perfect combo IMO!

I think I'm going to purchase the saito 100, most of you and people in my club said it will have plenty of power. It will also save me $50.00 instead of going with a 125.

Thanks!

I have a 100 on the H9 Miss America, flies it fine. The P-51 is a floater and good sport plane. I'm in the process of replacing the retracts with LADO electrics.

Hi Guys,
I have a saito 100 and apc 14/8 prop in a H-9 Spit and it flies good. I would like to get a little more power though, what props are you guys using on your 100?
thanks,
Frank

Hey Frank,

My "Marie" started out with a Saito 100, and with a MAS 14x8 prop. I noticed after getting about 4 gallons (~25-30 flights) thru it that it had noticeably more power, so I switched to a MAS 15x8, which it could turn static at 8900 rpm, and higher than that in the air when it unloaded. That 100 has proven significantly more powerful than the one on my H9 60 Ultrastick.

With it, "Marie" was reasonably fast, and consistently beat a friend's H9 Corsair w/ Saito 100, so he raised the bar to a Saito 125. With his frontal area, the planes were then fairly even in speed, until I also upgraded to a Saito 125 (see pics in post #23).

Broke it in on the stand, and flew it in "Marie" with a MAS 15x8 until ~3+ gallons, when it really loosened up. Switched over to a MAS 16x8 (static 8900 rpm), and now it's clearly the fastest 60-size warbird in my club's 8-plane squadron (that is, until another flying buddy's 125 fully breaks in on his H9 Spit!).

Competition's tough up there!

Rip

Rip,

Do you think I should go with the 100 or 125 saito? I keep going back and forth with this, but its a lot of dough! I could save 50 bucks and just go with the 100. Can the miss america go unlimited vertical with the 100 or even close to it. I don't need this for a speed competition, but I can't stand under powered planes. I believe the 125 is 3oz's more weight.

I had one with an O.S. 1.20 Surpass III turning a 14X10 APC prop on 30% nitro all synthetis heli-mix fuel. Lots of power and reasonably fast (mid 120s)

sure

only when your engine turns above 13000RPM

happy landings

calculated on a base of 29.29Hg, that engine would produce 6.029HP and deliver 19.48 pounds of static thrust

WOW...

the realistic speed would be so around 85 to 90MPH - that engine and prop combo

Sorry to burst your bubble but sometimes these airplanes look faster then they really are....
Happy landings

David,

Sounds like you're on a budget, so its up to you where the line is on bucks spent. This ain't a cheap hobby, and while my jollies aren't had by over-populating my hangar with lots of planes (in spite of my sig!), what's parked in there typically have what I want in them, regardless of cost. Hence, for example, the 125 in "Marie" and the 220 in "Frankie."

Nice thing about the 125, besides the added power, is that Keleo makes a Pitt's-style muffler for it, allowing you to keep everything except the valve covers inside the cowl (again, see pics in post #23). Plus, IT'S FAST!

The 100 doesn't have a similar Keleo offering, though I'm sure you could fashion something "clean" with a flex-pipe exhaust. BTW, neither of these engines give me "unlimited vertical" (but, note my airfield is at 5200' MSL), but the 125 comes close (plus, my plane's significantly heavier than factory estimate). BIG loops or Split-S's are no problem. Speed on a strafing run is tail waggin'!

Also, regarding the 125, don't worry about the weight: with fiberglass reinforcing of the firewall, wing bolt plate and gear rails, on-board glow, and the heavier 125, my "Marie" comes in at 28.6 oz./ft2 wing loading (9lb-4oz dry). That also includes the added weight of bashed flaps, AND their extra two servos!

I'd recommend you make your engine choice either a $$$, or power-desired decision, not a weight decision...

Rip

JudyGuy,

Saito 125 is the way to go.

What, a DA 50, I was thinking about the DA 150. This warbird will break some speed records...LOL!!! I may go with the 3W-170, its just a little more at $2100.00 LOL.

Judsterkey,

I fly at the same 5200 foot field that Rip does. I have a sweet running Saito 100 in my '51 and it still tears around pretty good after 160 flights or so. Not unlimited vertical, but even at this altitude it has plenty of power to pull the plane through big loops and level flight at well over scale speed.

What I don't undertand is why you would want unlimited vertical on this type of plane (same reason, I think, that the guys are giving you a hard time about putting a DA50 in it). Unlimited vertical is required for true 3D and is very nice for IMAC flying, but this plane is not capable of either type of flight. Don't get me wrong, the H9 P51 is a fantastic flying warbird - but it doesn't remotely compare to even a Sig 4-Star or H9 Ultra Stick on aerobatics capability.

I think that the 125 or better yet a YS 110 is a better shot if you want extreme speed, although you have to prop it right to get there. Absorbing the extra power of the 125 through a bigger, more scale looking prop gives you more pull but not more speed.

Greg
