In reading a book on the history of RAF aircraft I found two photos of WW2 carrier aircraft with unusual markings. One was a Grumman Hellcat (attached) and the other was a Grumman Avenger. After staring at the photos for a while a strange idea came to me; it looks this was a hasty overpainting of the US insignia. Anyone have a more authoritative explanation?

I seem to recall reading about French Carrier pilots flying off British carriers. If those roundels were just in color!!

You will also find Corsairs in these markings. They are RNZAF (New Zealand) Markings from the Pacific theatre.

Thanks for letting us know the facts. What threw me off is that the book is about RAF aircraft and no other Commonwealth airplanes appear there.

They are standard Royal Navy /Fleet Air Arm markings from late war .
Here is my Byron Corsair that I have just finished.
They were painted that way as they worked very close to US forces who were likely to shoot them down if insignia hadn't been modified
The Markings are the FAA far east 1944-45 design, the pacific area 1945-46 markings had the dark blue surround to the bar removed but looked almost identical.
The RNZAF colours were different and had light blue and and white, often with yellow outlines, also the RNZAF never flew hellcats though many great Kiwi pilots flew them in the Fleet Air Arm.
Good Luck
Paul
