Spent last night working on the Landing Gear. I am not feeling confident about these retracts. Almost every screw was loose...barley hand tight so I completely disassembled them and used locktite on all screws when I put them back together. I also disassembled the air cylinders and re lubed them. As long as I had the retracts apart I thought I should look in there too. There is considerable slop in the units and I am particularly worried about the amount of slop in the nose unit. In general the retracts feel very light weight and I suspect they are not made of the strongest aluminum. I am worried that these units are not up to the job. The struts on the other hand are very robust and should provide dependable service. The only thing here is how stiff the springs are in these struts. It take so much force to compress them that I wonder if the will ever compress under the jet's weight alone during normal operation. I am also having some clearance issues where the wheels enter the fuse. They don't fit without hitting the openings. There is barley enough clearance between the door cylinder for the tire. I have to study this before I decide to grind anything away. I'll get some pics when I get things worked out.
I am really leery of these retracts. Compared to Robart 635 these feel very flimsy.

Wagner....has the Factory upgraded these units? Do I have prototype units? If there is something better, can these be exchanged?

Thanks,
Dom

Dom,
My friend Joe has these same concerns and issues with the retracts.

Good to know.

If we all have the same issue than Fei Bao should make some changes and send new units to those Customers that have the poorly made units.

Dom,

I have my retracts installed and have probably cycled them over 200 times in the course of getting the retract and door valves right. The wheels have never hit the fuse and there have been no other issues I could see. I agree with you on the struts very robust but the springs are either to stiff or there is some binding in the struts. I have noticed a little slop in the retracts, nothing major, and a burr in the nose retract was keeping the nose strut from coming down, I hit with the dremel lightly and it is now fine.

Hi Gary.
Which way to you have the scissors on the main gear facing? They should face forward but it looks like mine was setup with the scissors facing rearward. I have them facing forward now. This should not make any difference with the wheel clearance however.
Thanks,
Dom

Dom,

In my last visit to the factory the retract was commented in the meetings, solutions were proposed and FB is redesigning and replacing the material that they use to manufacture those retracts, also we had studied the mains and nose strut springs, nose springs in some cases are too soft and mains to stiff, this has been corrected, I'll be back to China in 10 days and I'll recall all the F9F retracts and replace all the strut springs for the right ones.
For those customers that had issues with the F9F retracts, please contact me after Jan 20th, the springs I'll send to all the customers.

Happy Holidays to all.

I have the scissors facing back, I guess that is reverse of what is scale but it looks better. Anyway if I get a chnce this weekend I'll reverse them and see if it makes a diff.

Did some more work on the Panther today. Solved the rubbing between the wheels and wheel openings. The correct toe angle is critical. Still the wheels just barely clear. The gear was installed at the factory with self tapping wood screws. I mounted my gear with 6-32 bolts and blind nuts I ran my airlines being careful to maintain a sterile environment in the wheel wells. Proper routing is needed. I had to make some brackets to secure the wire and airlines so I used brass strip with shrink tubing over it to prevent sharp edges that could fray a line. I made new straps from brass to hold the gear door linkage. The supplied items were too loose. I then painted the linkages. I had a problem with one of the inner flap air cylinders. It leaked to the point of not even allowing the flap to extend. I disassembled it and replaced a couple O Rings and re lubed it. Works fine now. I finished routing the elevator and rudder wires and insulated them. I also insulated the top of my hatch in the area of the pipe gap. This bird is really tail heavy at this point. I will put all my equipment as far forward in the fuse as possible. I anticipate still needing to add ballast up front.
