I have the military version and they are all gray, the original paint that was applied in China virtually falls off, some of it came off while I was prepping the servos and linkages so I took the rest off and painted them!

Paint falls off? I am not liking the sounds of all these problems with the new Elan. I about to start putting mine together. I was expecting an easy to build kit that was well planned out and high quality due to the cost of the kit. I am hoping these problems we are hearing about are just a few "lemons" that got mixed in with the rest.

DO you have the sport or the military version?

It IS a good kit, looks AWSOME and I have seen the baby and the XL fly, they fly very well and are easy to land..

Will the servo cover accomodate 8611 servos?

am willing to bet they are same part # as my XL. Covers needed to be trimmed (internally, nothing visible) for 8611s but was no big deal.

Ohmigosh that looks AWESOME. Nice install, excellent packaging. Quite a bit different from my disappointing XL experience just a few months ago. Credit where it's due, excellent job!

digitech,
The pictures look great!

It also looks like I won't have to "grind" into the new composite fuse retract rails. They do drop in don't they without cutting away at the retract rails?
Thanks,
Don

highhorse,
You would have thought if they had to same problem with the XL it would have been corrected on the Elan but sounds like it wasn't..

OK synthetic, then your servo covers are white and are not painted ( lucky you) so you have no worries

as you can see it is just 5 minutes work for both sides , the jet-1a cylinders cover the space
here is what you must do:

digitech,
It looks like just some cutting for the cylinders (which is no problem at all) but I won't have to enlarge the retract rails where the Jet 1A's bolt to correct? In the picture it does not look like any changes are needed to the rails?
Thanks,
Don

no you can even add some uprights between the gear and the rails.
i was thinking to if nessecary to add some uprights of 2mm ply.
and a cover plate to add a sort of a box , there is space for it , but i think its overkill.
the rails look ok enough for me.

also just done the front steering.
i will add some tubing to the set so that the cables cant be catched by the front wheel...

digitech,
Your design looks great!

I have a couple of questions though.

1st) It looks like there is not much deflection (off set) in the struts compared to those in the past. Is this due to the narrow landing gear channel of the Elan or are you desiging them with less off set than in the past?

2nd) The strut looks very close to making contact with the front edge of the retract slot. I realize the force from landings should cause the strut to move towards the rear of the channel which in turn would allow for more space towards the front. What are the chances of the gear binding up against the forward composite channel wall?

Thanks Again,
Don

1 : no you are right this is a brand new design from Jet-1A , that i wanted to do for some time now.
with the Elan we now had to do it just earlyer..
these have almost no offset.
(more suprises are on the way)

2 : it is close indeed , mine did not touch the front of the tunnel , not even a scratch so dont worry about that..
these where tested BEFORE they where machined..

digitech,
I am glad to see the new concept with hardly no offset. The only drawback I saw to the Jet 1A's was the problem with the offset. Some planes have a former that is right in the way of the collapsed offset and this looks like it will take care of that problem.

Good job designing what actually will work for us.

Don

Close but not done yet. It's my first EVERYTHING. 1st jet, 1st brakes, 1st retracts, 1st Powerbox, 1st RRS, on and on.

If I build another one I'm sure I'll finish in 1/4 the time as this one. For now just slow and careful, w/ lots of time on RCU for help.

then a boomerang is just the right thing m it is by far out the most simple to build and fly airframe.
you will have lots of fun with it..

Sandor,
What size wheels are supplied? They look awful small compared to the wheel well. I'd expect 2 3/4" (70mm)?
