OK Guys Watch this space the 120SX is going in the Elan tommorow and posibly will be flown in the afternoon, will be interesting to see the pitot and GPS reading compared to the P80, will let you all know tommorow.

I have a P120 in mine, albeit it is not an SX, you will like the 120 in the Elan,

Enjoy and look forward to see what figures you get from your GPS.

Peter

Oh yes
I have a P160SX in my Elan, GREAT fun on takeoff and verticals, I have turned it down to around 115.000 RPM (approx 13 Kg), but planning on mounting my JetCat pitot tube, and dialing the turbine up to max RPM's, what would be the maximum allowed speed to set the ECU to ? (200 mph/320 Km/h or is that too much ?)

too much
the max we ever got an elan to when testing with a 34 lbs thrust turbine was around 180 mph. Please remember... these models are not designed or constructed for speeds anywhere near 200 mph.

OK,

so would say 180 mph be a "safe" speed, I know that it all depends on the flying style, and I know one has to be carefull with the maneouvers going full speed, but on a strait and level flyby, would 180 mph be within "safe limits" ?

Damm, all this time I have been flying my Elan with the P120, I thought it was hitting 200mph!!!

Need a different airframe then!

Have a look at Ali's new Mach 1 airframe, not out yet, but looks like its going to be a good one, a larger version is on the cards to take a P120, but not just yet, I am sure Ali will put this right if I got the information incorrect.

Be very very carefull when going faster then 270 km/h (170 m/h) with the ELAN!!!
I've got a pitot-tube and a fast running P-120SE.
2 times I crashed almost because when I was going full power in a dive, the elevator was simply not effective anymore.
The elevator became effective after slamming the throttle back.
Thought the elevator servo's where not strong enough (JR8311) so I replace them with 2 JR8411 with thicker servo extensions wires .
The second time it happened again, so basicly its the model that is not able to handle >165 M/h.
Th fastes speed I recorded with the Elan was 290 km/h (180 m/h), that was also almost my second crash....

Thanks for all the warnings chaps, I will moderate my enthusiasm, if I can. LOL.

I will post what readings I get when I come back from the field.

Guys

The wind today was at 40mph, but I did fly and the GPS and Pitot did confirm a 40mph difference, I was over 180Mph in some of the runs, but on not one occasion did I run out of elevator authority in fact on one reversal I pulled 9.96G which did not concern me at the time utill I saw the readout, but does prove how well the design of this ariframe will withstand some abuse, don't do it too often though, if I had to draw a conclusion from all this, it has to be that this airframe does not need a P120 the P80 is perfect for it, if you want something fast and adrenaline pumping do what I will be doing next, a C-ARF Rookie with full vectored thrust and the 120SX to power it, should be fun.

Oh one other thing, the spool up from the SX is absolutly amazing its just like a petrol engine, move the throttle it responds, landings have never been so easy, you can come in with the throttle closed and it will open up to go around, but its so good you can feather the throttle and get it on the numbers without a problem.

I have not seen the lack of elevator authority either, I have 2 8511 on the elevator, and even doing dives with the 13 Kg push, no sign of problems with the elevators ?!
But then again, I don't (yet) know the max speed, the pitot will hopefully tell...regarding the pitot, I'm looking for a nice place on the ELan for it, I have the BVM pitot mount, but it's soo bulky, any other good ideas for the mounting ?

Fitted the Pito tube into the wing stub, I think it looks much better than the BVM Mount?

Mike

Post 1540 on Page 62 shows how I mounted mine, the tube the pitot is in is part of an old bent aerial off a 35Mhz Tx, by using a tube cutter it reduces the dia just enough to be an interfearance fit for the pitot, you will have to bend the bottom angled pipe to be parrallel with the other pipe and install from the outide, but then you would have to do that with the BVM mount as well.

Thanks Mike,
that makes it very clear!

Only thing is I'm scared that the protuding (sp?) tube will easily be broken off at the position during "hangar handling" etc.
Well, I must just learn to be careful

I have everything on my Elan set up for operation and accesability on the left hand side of the fus, the pitot is on the right hand side, so far so good, I also leave the wing incidence pins in and seem to hit those more often than anything else, the long one is a bit of a pain when it digs you in the side, but that is offset by the convenience of fitting the wing easier on that side.

I glued the wing incidence pins with BVM aeropoxy to get rid of the huge slob!
My horizontal stabilizer could be moved almost 8mm!
After glueing the pins there is almost no slob left! And it fly's even better than before

Is the Elan build manual (not the Digitec retract manual) available to download for pre-purchase inspection?

The only huge slob I have is my mechanic, sorry Mark??? LOL.

No insult intended Henk, I know English is not your first language, but you meant slop as in sloppy, excess movement.

I was not able to find one prior to my purchase, it is in the same line as the plastic kits of old, lots of line drawings with stick this to this with this glue, so it does not tell you a lot, but sufficient to get the job done, notes at the end on movements, C of G and mixes are all spot on, there is so little to do that you do not need a more detaild manual.

Thank you Mike.

I been flying EDFs and this would be a first forray into turbines. I always like see a manual first whenever possible as it helps to give me a sense of what I am getting into and (usually) helps to assure me that I can handle the project.

I guess there is no manual that covers the part that will be most foreign to me anyhow - the location and installation of the various turbine and fuel system components.

You will find that everyone on here has their own opinion on what equipement to use and where to put it, the most useful piece of information given to me was that without the wing, booms and tail on but with the canopy on legs down and full UAT the C of G is about 1" in front of the front incidence pin, that is a good starting point, I am now behind that position and the position recommended in the manual, but for a first flight it was ideal.

This thread is very long, but there are some good instalation shots on it, that will give you an idea of where everything needs to be put, if I get into the office tomorrow I will post a couple of my instalation shots to start you off.

LOL no problem Mike

But you know what I mean?
I could move my tailbooms with horizontal stabilizer, in my opinion you never stop trimming you plane when you tail is moving!
At a recent jetmeeting in The Netherlands I checked a few other Elans and almost every Elan hat this SLOP!! LOL
Didier also posting here at the forum told me he glued the wing incidence pins and now the plane is far better to trim.

I have to admit I have not noticed any SLOP in my tail booms, but will check more thoroughly next time I rig, I wonder if the slop develops over time? I only have 20 flights on mine so will keep an eye on this for the future.

Socomon.

A couple of instalation shots for you to digest, and a couple more of the pitot instalation.
