It's only a few months since we are allowed in Denmark to use 2.4 GHz on jets and "large models" (>7 Kg), so I'm in the process of changing all my planes to 2.4 GHz at the moment.
I'm investing all my money in Weatronic equipment at the moment (8 jets and some large propplanes that needs to be equipped)

Carsten

I started with 2.4ghz on the Spektrum DX7 and modules as soon as it came out, brown out issues still exist, the Rx just boots quicker after it has switched itself off?????? then I tried the Graupner IFS system (XPS in US) Locked out four times in the first flight sent back for refund and I got my monies back, not a credit note, but cash, I now fly Futaba FASST without any issues, personally I think the Weattronics is overkill for what I fly and there have been software issues since it came out, so I will stick with the FASST system for now.

Overkill or not...
I have one of their Micro 12 channel receivers that goes into the Elan (as well as some of my other jets), and a 12-22 (the big one with built-in "powerbox) for my Skymaster Viperjet.
The nice thing is that you can get 8,10 and 12 channels (dual) receivers at a good price (8 channel at euro 118, and 12 channel at euro 188), and if you really need it, they have the large "powerbox type" receivers if you have a large plane where that is needed.
I have had 0 issues so far with them, I know that their start was less than ideal, many problems, but according to others here on the forum, these errors seem to be gone (I hope they are right )

Mike, or any other of you guys, how did you force the plate out (below tank) mine is substantially glued in (for a change)?
Gary.

Hi,
I received one of the newer kits 4 months ago and I can tell you it's too glued in to remove. On some of the older Elans, getting it out was not much of a problem. One thing to watch for as a heads up. I deceided to use a pully system for the nose gear and have mounted it above the 2 air tanks. Believe it or not, when trying to remove the servo tray inside of the nose gear compartment, one twist and the whole servo tray came out in one piece. It was suggested by Mike and many others to really secure all the joints etc. in the ship for safety. Good idea.

Doc

No prfab, this is all built by me, everything even the truss's and the retaining wall for the earth, its located in my garden about 100ft from the house, so far it has taken about 3 months, I am just second fixing the electrics.

Back to the Elan

The front equipment tray came out very easily, I think it was only glued in with hot glue, so a bit of flexing and out it came without too much effort.

Hi Mike,

I think the tray he was talking about was the ply that supports the main fuel tank, unless I read it wrong. As a matter of fact, the equiptment tray actually has 2 retangular cut outs towards the rear of the tray that snap right into 2 male tabs on the plywood support. You can see the tabs towards the rear of the tray.

The rear tray came out even easier, it was only attached by the four tabs, two of which you showed, in fact I did not glue mine back in I used the velcro straps that hold the tank onto the longitudinal former between the three cross formers to hold the tray in place, the tabs locate it and stop it moving, and it enabled me to position my two A123 batteries under the tank to get the C of G back, my ECU battery also a three cell A123 is inbetween the wheel wells, if all that is unclear I could take a pic and post it, not tomorrow I'm going fishing, but could do it Wednesday.

Yes Doc, thanks, the plate over the air tanks just fell out, saved me a job but I need to get the tank plate out to fit some carbon dowels in for tank support.
Mine's a new late one, I am missing the feed hole in the wing stubs to thread the ail/ele/rudder cables through but when I marked the hole positions and peered through the gap outside the retracts I noticed the front retract bearer is right behind the hole I marked (using the boom as a reference for the hole). I don't know whether AC has modified how far the retract bearers go towards the outer wing rib or what.

How far have you got with yours Doc, is it finished?

Steering servo tray looks ok but a lot of joints need gluing, the first ones I did were the top of the formers where they should glue to the longitudenal canopy support plates, did you check your's?
Gary.

One thing to keep in mind when re-gluing areas that you think may be suspect is that turbines are not as prone to vibration as our pervious IC models so unless its structural they don't need as much beefing up as our old IC airframes, you could end up adding a lot of unnecessary weight with a couple of tubes of Hysol.

On the latest Elans the longitudinal ply formers under the tank plate are adequate to support a couple of velcro straps for the tank, I admit I did put in some carbon rods after I destroyed the underside of my Elan on a flame out and outfield landing in a ploughed flint field, Ohchhhhh. , but prior to that the ply formers where adequate.

I didn't realise they had been added Mike, it's still a pain to get under the plate to get at batteries etc though.
I don't intend using a couple of tubes of Hysol but when the turbine mounting plates are not glued to the support formers it requires some action!

madmodelman,

I simply made the tank support a bolt in affair after removing it. The use of a heat gun to soften the glue joints at the tank support and formers and a gentle tug should have the tank support out in short order. Having unlimited access under the tank support is a definite plus for routing and battery installation.

Here in the first picture, notice the hardwood maple blocks "total of six distributed between the three formers". These have 6/32 t-nuts inset by which the tank platform is secured.

Here in the second picture showing the bottom side of the tank mounting platform,. you can see that I have added reinforcement strips to the bottom. This serves two purposes in that it strengthens the platform and allows for drilling the mounting holes to accept countersunk 6/32 bolts.

Third picture is a top view of the tank platform with the velcro retaining straps. Here you can see the mounting holes drilled and countersunk. Also notice the mounting position of the UAT.

Last picture shows the platform in position less the mounting bolts installed. This setup proved to be more than adequate to secure the tank without the need for dowels through the formers.

Post 1926 on page 78 shows the carbon rod modification I did after my arrival, bit less effort and just as servicable.

Thanks for that, there's some good idea's there, very helpful, never thought of heat on the glue! That plate definately does have to come out!
Like the position of the valves on the wells also.

You're a star, got the plate out with heat intact, thanks very much.
Can I ask you guys another question.
How have you routed your extensions from stub wings to rx?
Mine has no holes cut in the ribs, just the main spar and anti rotation holes.
I spotted a hole using the booms as a pattern but the large hole just behind the mainspar has the front retract beam in the way so I just carefully cut a semicircle to miss it but I cant see any way of feeding the cables as there is a full depth plywood spar in the way.
Do I just bash another hole through the ribs?

Not really sure what is going on there outside changes made between the new & old versions of the kit. My leads are routed so that they run along the leading edge side of the flap servo opening and are anchored to the forward former under the turbine mounting rails. I did have to make adjustments between the holes in the fuselage and the booms as they did not line up.

Great, thanks for the pics, I'll bash another hole through where yours is.
I spoke to Alan C about it, apparently mine is the first one with the holes missing, if there's one going I always get it!

Hi,

I didn't have that problem but what I did, & it may be an over kill, is in your picture where you can see the flap servo, I glued a thin piece of ply and made a cover over the opening then added BVM Heat shield paint to the entire area. I really don't want to take a chance of heat effecting the servo and the added weight is really nothing. Just a thought.
I can post a picture if you need it.
