First off,
THANKS guys! Joe Hunt, good to see you, and thanks for remembering me! I sure miss reading all your posts and reviews, etc on the other forum you once ran/owned?
Bodywerks,
Yes, I have the DA-85 being delivered to my house today. I only bought a JTEC pitts to break the engine in on the test stand with, and then AFTER the 3 gallons? DA recommends w/ Lawnboy Ashless, I will THEN mount the DA85 to the plane, and put a KS95 on it, and only run clean Amsoil through the KS95 cannister.
Also Bodywerks, when you say you "solder your leads" and do not use extensions, do you mean you CUT OFF the stock JR/Hitec/Fut connectors on your servos, and then solder on some 22awg Heavy Duty twisted wire, and then shrink tube the solder joints, thus ELIMINATING the connectors at this point?
I too have always considered doing this. I'm quite good at soldering anyway.
Anyone know who sells QUALITY heat shrink tubing in different colors? I HATE the crap Radio Shack, and Home Depot sell. I know there are many places online selling heat shrink tubing, but I was wondering if there are any R/C places that sell it, that I'm used to buying from.
Anyhow, I cannot WAIT to get my plane from Aeroworks. I wonder if they are shipping UPS or FedEx? I ordered the plane Monday morning of this week, and I'm in GA, and AW's is in CO.
MAYBE I'll get it Friday if I'm REALLY lucky.
Guess I'll have to break this DA-85 in to kill time. Does anyone remember HOW many gallons of Lawnboy Ashless mix DA recommends putting through an engine? I THINK it was 2-3 gallons, correct?
Also, does DA recommend regular 87 octane, or 89 or 93 octane? I cannot remember what their manual states.???

I have one more question: Is anyone here using a manual choke on the DA-85 on this plane? Is it even possible? Man how I love big Yak cowls, which let you just reach right in and flip the choke. I hate choke servos, but even more, I hate manual choke lever (usually wire) extensions, as they vibrate like hell, and ream out the hole in the cowl. Is it possible to REACH up into that big hole in the underside of the cowl, and choke the DA-85?

Also, on top of pauls question, do you guys cut a hole in the cowl for access to the mixture needles?

Paul,

DA told me to break it in on the plane with the ks95 can...

Yes, I know it's ok to break it in on the plane. That's how I've ALWAYS done my DA engines back before I sold them all.
HOwever, I like to break them in on Pitts mufflers, and let the Pitts take all that crud and black crap inside that builds up.
THEN, when I switch to clean Amsoil, I put on the KS95.
I will have the engine for a week or so before I even START this build, so I've got the time, and I like to run engines every now and then on my test stand.
NOT necessary by any means, but it's what I do...

Yup, I remember ya'. You write mature, but I think you're in your 20's? You can still read me here and on www.norcalrc.com, mostly. I also post a few other places from time to time. But, working more now, and online less. You're gonna dig that plane!

Paul, I actually just remove the pins from the plug on the servo and leave the pins connected. I then cut my servo wire to length, strip and twist about 3/16" of wire, tin it, and "plug" it into the pins on the servo lead. Then I solder the connection, making sure I also flow solder through the crimped connection of the pin - simple.
You may want to talk to DA about running the engine on the bench. The engine relies on airflow over the fins, and often times the propwash is not enough. Gyroscopic loads from flying also help to seat the bearings and such, too. and varying loads on the prop at varying throttle settings also aid in break-in.
I did a manual choke setup on mine without cutting a hole in the cowl. The pushrod comes right out the air intake - here's the pics again:

Yes Joe!
You've got a heck of a memory! However, the only thing is that it's been about 4 years now, and I'm 29!! Damn how those years pass by nowadays!
Anyhow,
Bodywerks,
Yes, you are right, I should call DA, as I too was thinking about the engine cooling, and whether or not the engine would truly "BREAK" in if only on a bench.
Maybe I'll just run it on the plane as I always have during break in. I'll just use the Pitts muffler while on Lawnboy.
Yes, yes guys, I admittadely am the most particular guy on this forum when it comes to my planes/etc. I cannot stand having all that crud buildup in my sweet can. (ok, so this is my first cannister ever, always ran Pitts mufflers in the past), but you get the point.
Not to mention the fact that I have spent out enough yen as of now, so it's time to use the Pitts I've got, and then spring for the KS cannister later.
Peace.

Oh, one more thing bodywerks,
What in HADES is the deal with those "tri-bolted" BLIND nuts? Is that what you did, or am I the one who is BLIND???
I would have thought your ULTRA light setup policies would have deemed that a big No-No. Could have just used a dab of Hysol eh?

Blind nuts are lighter than a washer and lock nut, and the screws holding the blind nuts in place are in lieu of standard blind nuts that just have a jagged tooth. I also doweled the firewall in that area so that the wood could not compress. Also, notice the near-perfect length of the engine mount bolts - only 2.5 threads protruding, and those are titanium bolts

I did a similar choke setup as Bodywerks. Check it out. Mine came out stiff enough I didn't need to support the wire up front. Light and simple. Sweeeeet!

Oooh,
SMARKS! Now THAT is how I will be doing my choke. Nice pics, and nice setup man. SIMPLE, and eliminates the need for a choke servo.
I like. Thanks for the pics.

That firewall cut looks incredible. It's perfect!

Guys,
Does anyone here have pics of their KS95 or MTW exhaust? I really would like to see the header setup too. Anyone using the SOLID drop header, or is everyone using the FLEX? I have heard the flex is necessary, but I've never seen it mounted in this plane.
Anyone know where some header/cannister pics are? Only one I've seen is on AW's site, that just shows the tip of the cannister that exits the fuse. I've never seen the rest of it.
Thanks.

Oh, Bodywerks,
Are those 1/4-20 Titanium bolts you mounted your DA with? What length is needed? I tried to find some balsa like that, but couldn't find any even close to that
