Can Monkey really fly?????? Or is he just a builder?

Hi Barry! Oh Monkey can fly alright!

http://www.ruddermayhem.com/monkey5.wmv

Yeah I can see that now. He's not your average monkey. Better be careful...he may not need you before too long.

Great flying. What plane is that? Looks like an Extra 260 but not one I'm familiar with.

Thanks
Barry

It is an Aeroworks Extra 260, not sure if its the 35% or the 40%. Looks like it had 2 servo's per elevator half which would make it a 40%'er....

Joe, just noticed that monkey was taking a ride at the end of the video. Where I can I watch more of that part?

Wow! You really lightened up that hatch! I assume you are going with some CF stuff, too? Poor Rocco's feelings must get hurt when he sees pics of all that fine wood in the trash, though

Yep, all carbon. Yeah, my dremel just kept cutting! I did the same thing on my Yak hatch and didn't seem to weaken it at all, so I took it to the Extra hatch. Lightened it up quite a bit.

I know, all that wood Rocco works so hard to get, now in the trash. Although, he mentioned to me that he has thought about doing a "lightened" version of these planes for people concerned about weight. You never know what he's up to?!?

Well, mine bit the dust yesterday
I was doing a low, slow inverted pass and went to push over into a low torqueroll and the engine quit at the most inopportune time - the plane nosed over inverted and pancaked, tacoing the fuse, crushing the rudder and smashing the cowl. It can fly again with a new fuse, rudder, and cowl, but I am thinking of upgrading to the 42% 260 by selling my H9 35% and what's left of this one, so I am up in the air on whether or not to repair it. If I don't, I will have a set of wings and CF parts for sale soon...

That is a very very big BUMMER ! Sorry to hear of your loss. How many flights did you have on it ? Why do you think the engine quit. Idle set to low or some other issue ?

I only had about 12 flights on it. I don't think the idle was too low because I was blipping it ever so slightly the entire time. I don't think it was too lean because the line was full of fuel and the carb was plenty wet after the fact. And I don't think it was too rich on the low end because I had 11 other successful flights with it before, and I leaned the low end a tad prior to this flight. It seemed to die off pretty hard, so I think the ignition might be the culprit. It will go to DA this week to find that out.
Bottom line, $#!+ happens. I am not thinking about selling it because I am all bummed or because I don't like the plane. I have just really been eyein' their 42%er for a long time, and I have enough money wrapped between this plane and my 35%er to afford it if I sold it for the right price...and spending $400 to fix this would be a step backward.

Nick,
Really sorry to hear about the crash. I never did get to see the plane fly. Bummer! I think you have a good plan on getting the 42%. Bigger always flies better. See you in three weeks at the Phoenix IMAC!

After reading this thread, and watching your video's with the 85's robust power, I am on the fence with the AW96" or go up to the AW104" with the 85...... Your thoughts...?

The 85 would pull a lightly-built 104"er with authority. You would need a full CF package (spinner, tubes, and tailwheel), a can or pipe and only one rudder servo and a simple, lightweight electric setup and you'd be about 25 pounds. You would also want to run the supplied smoke tank as your fuel tank to reduce your takeoff weight even further by about 6 ounces. If you are at sealevel, this will be plenty to pull out of a hover and have unlimited vertical.
