Hi,

A clubmate gave me a tip to use a little Armorall in the fuel to prevent fuel foaming.

I've never heard of using it and thought i'd ask about it here.

If he's right, how much do you mix in with the fuel?

In West Oz we mix our own fuel 20 lt at a time. For 20 lt I use one full squirt of the small armor all pump.
For 5 litres, Just a small bit of mist is enough.

Make sure you use Armor All "Original". A small bottle goes a very long way and it does make a difference. I have tried mixing fuel without it then doing the shake test to see if the fuel will foam - it did, I then mixed in the armor all and repeated the test - it didn't foam. the mix I use is 65% Methanol, 15% Nitro, 17% Coolpower oil and 3% Castor.

Of course I really don't need it because all of my planes are so perfect that they never get any vibration transmitted to the fuel tank [:D]

If you have a foaming problem, make sure that your tank is insulated from any vibrations, your prop is balanced, your engine is tuned etc etc. anti foam should only ever be considered an insurance policy - not a repair for a poor build, out of balance prop etc.

One squirt doesn't seem like a lot in 20 litres. I was somehow imagining it in terms of whole percentages and was wondering what effect it would have on performance.

I've never had an issue with my planes but i did have the problem with my test stand on the weekend. I've realised my mistake now. The tank is mounted on foam but i secured it with nylon zip ties which effectively transfer the vibration. I'm going to attach it with rubber bands and see if that helps.

It is best not to add detergents, extra dyes and solubilizers to your commercial fuel in general. If you mount the tank in foam and use rubber bands, foaming should be minimal. Some solubilizers or other oils are used in some very high nitro fuels, but as a general rule, just use high purity dry methanol, nitro and oil(s). Make sure to clean your clunk from time to time for a good fuel draw and that it is moving freely and not gunked up.

Armor All has been used here in Oz for more years than I can remember and all that's needed is the tiniest spray in 5 litres as aussiesteve said. Percentage wise I'd guess you're looking somewhere in the .000001% or so :D. The silicone in Armor All is the active ingredient so really anything that has silicone in it should work. I wouldn't really advise one of those silicone car polishes though :). Contrary to popular belief it doesn't have the slightest affect on glow plugs.

However I've heard that the latest formulation of Armor All doesn't have silicone anymore but I've never bought any to test it because my little bottle will last another lifetime.

Armor All is an old control line flyer trick! Control line planes have tanks that are hard mounted and prone to foaming problems.

I use 2 drops per gallon. It's hard to believe that so little will make a difference but it surely does. Try it yourself! Give a jug a good shake and note the foam, then add 2 drops or so of original Armor All. Shake it again and see for yourself! Put some in a bottle and sell it to your friends!
