Here is the tail. I think it looks pretty good. This is the stock "fast" configuration. There is another fin outline that is described as "sport". We don't want that one now do we!

Now I will move on to skin hinging the elevator.

I have decided to conventionally hinge the rudder as I want to maximize the control travel. It would be limited if I would choose to use a skinned hinge.

I have the rudder hinged with ez hinges and this worked good. I also now have my elevator skin hinged and that went very well. That will have to remain in the press overnight so now that I have that figured out, I will do the wings.
One thing about the wings, I have some small 3\8" carbon rod I was thinking about inserting into the center section to act as a short spar. Probably about 8" into each wing or so. Any thoughts as to whether this is needed or should I just rely on the fiberglass on the center section?

Wow! The skinned hinge method works great. Daven technique worked perfectly and am very happy. I got one aileron done and the elevator. I will post pics when I get home.

Thanks Bob, I will just go with the glass.

So here is how the hinging came out. What a great method. I am thinking of painting this thing green in tribute to Daven! I have cut the Elevator free as you can see. The aileron will have to wait as I am putting light fiberglass over the wing. I have added a small rocket tube in the wing to make fishing the aileron cords easier.
If I could just spend some more time on this I could be done in no time. Now I am off to do the Friday thing. With the weather still nice here I will be at the field this weekend as well.

I am just finishing up the .75 oz cloth on the wings. One is finished. I have the tailfeathers all glassed and they are ready to install. I have added some photos of the hinging on the ailerons. You can see the little fiberglass cover plate that goes on the bottom of the aileron to cover the gap.
Daven mentions using gap seal tape in addition to this and to be honest I do not understand that. I think I would consider this complete at this point. It sure does work good and is extremely smooth.
Next I will glue the wing panels together and glass the center section. After I get the wing mounted I can check the incidence and attach the tail. I will use nyrods for controls back to the tail. I do not think I will add a tail wheel. It will be a lot of work to run a linkage down there.

Here is the wing after being epoxied together. I have also added the center fiberglass cloth as described in the wing direction sheet. You add a 4" piece of cloth and then an 8" over that and then a 12" piece over that. This should hold it. I am using 3M foam sanding blocks to sand the glass and it is working very well. It blends everything nicely as they conform to the curves of the wing.
I have an idea about the aileron servo covers. I am going to try some sheet plastic I picked up at the hobby store. I want to use some plastic tube also to streamline the exit of the pushrod to the aileron.
Something I discovered tonight, I will have to cut a slot in the bottom fiberglass sheet cover to allow the control horn to clear. I am thinking about using epoxy to glue G10 fiberglass into the aileron for my control horn. Any thoughts?
Now that the wing is almost done, I will be able to start mounting it and finishing the Fuse. I will be using 4, 1\4 20 bolts countersunk into the wing to hold it. Just like the shoulder wing Q-500 planes except on the bottom.

VG, it looks great! What weight cloth in the center of the wing? I've never tried this, but it seems like you could inlay a T style control horn into the aileron and glass it in. I would stay with genuine nylon for durability. I use 1/16" ply control horns for 1/2A speedsters, but that's 1/2A.

OK, Now I think this plane is just too cool! I know I want to try to mask the performance of this thing from the club members but once they see it, I think I will be flying alone! It just looks fast. I really love the wing and I know it is going to perform well. I do not know what airfoil it has but it looks reflexed some. It kind of looks like an MH20 to me.

CB, the cloth in the center is 2oz. The entire wing is covered in .75oz. Right now before priming it weighs 1lb 6oz. I am not sure what the all up weight will come out at, but if I hit 4-4.5 lbs I think It should be fine.
I once heard, "it is not how much primer you put on, but how much you sand off". I think I will try to abide by this philosophy.
I think the G10 would adhere better than trying to glue nylon.

I could swear I saw a plane like that many years ago in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was a tomato red color with checkers under the wing. It had an Irvine engine, which size I'm not sure. It had a landing gear, with wafer thin wheels. The prop was wafer thin, and looked to be designed specifically for speed. There was no rudder, only the elevator and ailerons. He got it started, the engine just screamed like a tornado siren, especially when that tuned pipe kicked in. After about 10 feet, he was airborne. I NEVER saw anything fly that fast before, and I'm not sure if I have since. You could hear the air getting fried as it rushed over that thin wing. The runway was huge, 600' at least, maybe longer. He had to use a shallow landing approach, it just came in extremely quick, requiring every inch of landing strip available. The berm at the end was the only thing that could completely stop it (no major damage done, though). Exactly which model it was, I'm not absolutely sure. The owner did say, however, that it was a pylon racer.

By the way, vertical grimmace, that pilot had the air all to himself .

Vert, any thoughts of adding wing and tail filets? Potting the wing?
