Sweet! I like the blue fuse with the yellow.

Good luck with the maiden,
Mark

I looked back at the specs and the advertised weight is 4.5 lbs. That makes me feel better.

Thanks guys. It really was not too tough to build and it seemed to go pretty quick.

VG:

Looks great!!! Weight should not be a problem until around 6 lbs. For what its worth on the exhaust extension. I put my pipe on the belt sander and sanded a angle into it to clear the plane, and toutched it up with a good file. Yes, you could screw up a good pipe, but extensions have a habbit of de-tuning things. Think I ended up adding a home made 1/8" extension from alm. mill stock, but cleared and worked just fine. Pipe is still good and finds its way to other applications from time to time. Great Luck!!!

After looking a little closer to the pipe, I do not need much room so I think ill grind a little away from the fuselage. I really did not want to use the extension. I think grinding the pipe itself will be a last ditch alternative. That is the only holdup at this point so the test flight will probably be made on Thursday. Hopefully I will have the field to myself.

It looks good Rich! 4# 13 oz. is not bad in a one off build. Build the same airplane a dozen times, and you learn where to shave a few grams here and there. (Oops, I nearly forgot you build and fly cl combat - same song, different verse)

For reference, the couple dozen Formula Ones I built came in between 4# 9 oz and 5# 2 oz. This was with an engine that only weighed 12 oz and 50 squares less wing area, but with an engine cowling, wheel pants, cockpit and pilot.

Hope the weather holds out for flight tests. Spring is too far away.

Too bad I could not fly today. It is in the 70's here and absolutely perfect for flying. I was able to grind enough away from the fuselage for the muffler to clear. I will not need an extension after all. I may sneak out here within the next day or two.

I love the job you done it. You will love the way it flyes.
Good luck on popping it's cherry

Thanks Kevin. I am very happy with the kit and will most likely have another in my future. Possibly a QM 15 of some sort. I ran the engine yesterday and it works great. Now I just need some good weather. I will have the next 4 days off, so some time in there I am sure I can sneak out to the field.

OooH..Yah! I got in the maiden flight! Just got back from the field. I was able to sneak out of the shop early today. It was only 32 degrees at the field but it was fine for the short time that I needed.
I used a 9-6 APC to start with to keep the load down on the engine. Again I am using a Jett muffler. I did not tach it but it was turning very good. I was down anywhere from 500 to 1000 rpm from peak. I am trying to take it a little easy on this new engine.
I did not put on a tail wheel, just a Goldberg skid. I had no trouble taxiing the plane with rudder and up elevator. This is a big plus because at our club races it is nice to handle your aircraft like a typical sport plane, other than typical full throttle push off launch we use in pylon. It will be nice not having to hold onto the plane before launch and have a helper on the runway.
I advanced the throttle and it tracked perfectly straight. After about 50' She lifted off with just a touch of elevator. No trim was needed at all. I had put a little up in to start with and that remained but I never experienced a nervous, uncomfortable moment! What a great flying plane. I made several hot laps with pylon turns at the end of the field and it tracked very well. Extremely smooth. After a short time, I dropped the flaperons to see how these responded. I have them set on a switch to drop about 10 degrees. I still had solid control of the ailerons and did notice a tendency to climb. Not enough to trim out though. I flew down pretty slow to get a feel for how the flaps helped. I did not notice any negative tendancies, so decided to use them when I landed. I noticed a slight pitch increase in the sound of the engine. I knew right away the muffler came loose. Time to land! I dropped the flaps and came around with a long shallow approach. I was about 15-20' above the ground through my approach. At the thresh hold of the runway I was about 5' high. This was too high. My speed was good though and I set her down just after she past me in the snow covered grass. This is a very clean airplane but I feel confident the landings will be no problem. It was dead calm and I think with a little wind it should land great.
I am very impressed with this plane. It was a little slower than I expected but I do not have my engine optimized yet. I would estimate today it was in the 110-120 range. To anyone half interested in this design I recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

Nice build. Great job. I think I must have one under the tree after all!

I want to try and get out again within the next couple of days to do some more flying. It is really cold here though. We shall see.

I got in 3 more flight today and everything is well. It lands sweet and is pretty fast. I think if I want it to be faster I will have to get a better engine though. I flew her once with a 9-7 apc. I did not tach it though. It gets off the ground very well with this prop. Then I got in 2 flights with an 8.8-8.75. This prop took a little longer to get off of the ground but once it unloded in the air it seemed a little faster. But not much. I would estimate I am going around 120 mph. Not terribly fast but I think she will hold her own with he other club members who are willing to race.
As for landing, it is really a piece of cake and I have been using the flaperon. I am finding it best to just kill the engine in the downwind leg and glide her in. This is taking about 300' to land. This is a very easy plane to operate and flies very well. It holds it's heading in the turns very well.
I am finding the Duplicolor paint to not be the most durable and personally I would not recommend it. Maybe it needed to cure longer than I let it but it does not like raw fuel. I think I will clean it, touch it up and give it a good shot of clear on the Fuse.

Just so you know, the Jett 50LX or 60LX will slip right into the existing mounting holes. Sorry did not tell you you had to let the Duplicolor paint to cure for a few days. Coat of clear should work out fine (I hope). EnJOY
