On 10-16-07 while making a landing managed to hit one of the PVC poles used to make our clubs pilot stations(c first picture)
Here are the jigsaw puzzle re assembly photos at this stage its back together and I'm filling some low spots in preparation for .06Oz glass, prime and then--" Flite Metal thank goodness they are easy enough to replace."

every thing aligned and first coat of filler applied for low spots;when repair complete will laterally balance wing-
The REAL bummer is both Robart struts bent: they are quite unsatisfactory (in my opinion)for any 1/5 scale P-47 unless the entire airframe is Monokoted;and who does that?? Robarts steel tubing is VERY weak and I'm told this is to keep from ripping out the retract mounts--------

repairs look nice so far Lucky the glass held most of the wingtip together.... I must say though, Im totally amazed that a pvc pole could do that much damage to a fiberglassed wing :0 I would have guessed that the wing would destroy the pvc... Are they filled with something to give extra weight?

Yea me too- The big heavy bird had just touched down;was a reasonably slow approach to touch down using full flaps and the engines low throttle trim centered so the idle was pretty low--->kinetic energy can sure do damage when a moving object impacts an immovable object. Last season I taxied in to the same pilot barrier or one of the 5 or so pilot station barriers and it smashed in the leading edge
I applied another skim coat to the top and bottom panels;I will sand and feather the surfaces later this evening;so that brings me to glassing the panel with 2 layers of .06 oz glass cloth. won't be long before its flight ready;except for the wait on a new pair of Robart Mfg. upper landing struts. I might add I find the struts as sold for the 85" P-47 are VERY VERY weak!

Fast Richard...Please tell me this wasn't your much followed 47. With all the work you put into it, I almost feel it when it get dinged. I do admire you for both flying it instead of "hanger queening" it, and making the rest of us feel normal by posting here. Best of luck.

Are the wheels supposed to fall off when you land? No? How about the engine?
Reincarnate: yes thats me but the refinish of the Rt wing won't take long I'm so pis--- at myself letting the thing drift to the right during the flair; for such a heavy plane it seems to float in ground effect wether over the adjacient grass run way or the paved run way, there was a cross wind, which bothered non of the trainers putting me to shame ;SO I think its a trim issue so when I get my new upper struts from Robart I will be back at it and try and get the beast dialed in-

Glassed most of it finishing it Sat. later...then trim and light sand and primer--- I will post that but won't bore you all with more FM application think I covered that in a previous thread
After sanding the glassed surface I brushed on two heavy coats of Klass Kote white primer will let it fully cure ,finish sand and and make a final posting with the new Flite Metal panels applied. I of course laterally balanced the 47 before its maiden back in April but find the wing it self now balances AFTER the repair...So I will re balance both axis;also spoke with Robart today and a new set of upper struts are on the way costing me the better part of 50- I hope to be in the air this weekend if not I will fly the 1/7 which I'm replacing with another in Olive Drab and done up in Capt. Robert S. Johnson's earlier Thunderbolt called "Lucky" finished in a semi gloss Olive Drab to replicate the sanded and "waxed" aircraft that the legendary 56th FG flew. Truth be told the 1/7 kicks a with a 120pumped OS 4/C

dry sanded most of the white Klass Kote Primer off then wet sanded. Inspected it then skimmed a coat of red auto putty over the repaired area and then dry followed by wet sanding that. I've set it aside waiting for an order of Flite Metal and the upper landing struts. My final post(did I state that already will be the finished repair.
Apparently my 1/5 P-47 is not very strong as between coats of drying filler I was re reading Capt. Robert S. Johnson's book this afternoon and here is what he observed on one of his last missions,as follows:"A heartbroken Stewart chewed up the field in vicious fashion, running so close to the ground that he smashed into a telephone pole. It was impossible,it couldn't happen, but the Thunderbolt sheared the pole in two and Stewart came home with a jagged piece of the pole impaled in his wing."
