Wow guys. Thanks for all the kind words! Like I said, I'm into this hobby for fun and I'd rather build it.

I need some help in a couple of places. One is I'd like to do a "detail" that's unique but not killer. Such as, I'd like to make a copy of the crash pylon inside the canopy but I'm not certain if I'm going to do a full blown cockpit. I'd really like to stay with my trade mark "frosted" or blacked out canopy to keep as much weight aft of the CG as possible to a minimum. 5 ounces (12" aft of the CG for a cockpit detail is 10 ounces on the firewall. That's 15 ounces I could really live without. I thought of doing a sliding canopy, but that just makes matters worse. I'd really like to find a dummy radial. It would keep the needed weight forward. Any ideas are welcome!

Second, I am in a desperate search for any documentation on the Gulf Oil Bearcat known as Gulfhawk 4th. Any black & white or color photos... Anybody get some pictures of Elmer Ward's replica at Oshkosh a few years ago? I've got a good start, but I really need a bunch more. You know the drill when it comes to documentation.

Thanks guys!

Dave, I think I have an article on Ward's Bearcat in an old EAA magazine. If I can find it, you can have it. Drop me a note at cvnkv@aol.com and remind me to look for it. Great looking Bearcat you've got started but I could not imagine such a fine airplane with a blacked out canopy. Even if you only do a partial cockpit, from the shoulders up, it will look good.

Dave,
as a Bearcat fanatic, let me tell you what a great job you are doing on your Civil Bear.
To Echo Chads inputs, with such work that you are doing, seems a shame that you would sell yourself on the cockpit. The roll over bar, armor/head rest should be relatively simple now.

My latest Bearcat is at the above link. Built more rugged and sturdy mostly because the power is huge, a Brison 5.8, and the added weight makes for more scale landings than if the plane is very light. I know I know, but the plane has so much wing area, and the flaps generate so much more lift when deployed that I kept getting remarks from judges about how unscale the landings looked cause it came in so slow.

I also think I may have a couple of pictures of the Gulfhawk, I will let you know what and if anything I find.

Great job,
Ray

Dave scanned a couple of images, black and white, send me your email addy and I will get them to you.

Cockpit Kits - 5/6/2003 7:07:23 AM

Okay guys, I'll confess. I really didn't want a "blacked out" canopy, but the idea of adding the weight from a scratch built cockpit has me concerned.

Does anyone know if one of Ziroli's F8F vac-u-form kits can be used, or are they just plain too big.

Is there any "chop and pick" vac kits that could be made to work and still keep the weight way down?

I'm just not a big fan of something getting a ride for free. On the otherhand, my wife's cat could be persuaded to fill that cabin up and it may need armor and a chute! LOL

How about a favorite Dummy Radial? Tianos looks good for the price but weighs 12 ounces. Aerotech's looks terriffic, even at $70.

Ray, that's a BIG Bearcat! Geez. Where's the cockpit kit from that's in the 109?

The Tiano radials are a bit heavy but I think that is on purpose. I used one in a project and was pleased with the results. If you want to go lighter use the Williams Brother's cylinder kits and build up your own crank case. I've done this also and it works great (I just used the front half of the cylinders mounted to a plywood baffle). If you need the nose weight, and you probably will, go with the Tiano product.

Chad, thanks. I've been following the thread where "Neo" is building a Bates SBD. He's just finished the radial in it and used Tiano's dummy. Man, that was a lot of work he went through to clean it up. Sure looks right though. Be sure to check out his web site for the entire build.

It's post #30.

For all who were sure I couldn't leave well enough alone, you were right. I redesigned the wheels with thinner spokes and got rid of the plastic hub. The machined hub gives support at the center and the rim. This really was the key to having some depth in the wheel itself.

Here's a shot of the back (inboard side) It may be hard to see, but there's a tiny rim machined on the perimeter to "look" like where the bead of the tire would press against. Hopefully, this'll show up better once they're painted.
that's a BIG Bearcat! Geez. Where's the cockpit kit from that's in the 109?
yeah, its a good size little guy. 86" wing span, lots of them have been built from what I have been told and what I have seen. They are from American Eagle, with dimensions very close to the Ziroli plans version. 1/5.5 scale.

That 109 is the PCM kit, and the cockpit kit inside is Pats offering for that model. I am working with the Diviley cockpit and some scratch built parts as well. This will build into the -1, earlier version than the -2 you are doing.

Dave,

Great work. Thank you for selecting my Bearcat plan. Feel free to contact me should you have any questions regarding construction methods, etc.

For your information - Elmer Ward's Gulfhawk 4th replica utilizes a two-seat cockpit and an extended canopy. The plexiglass was specially blown to fit an extended framework to allow additional room for a rear seat.

Photo-paks are available for the original Al Williams Gulhawk IV from Scale Plans and Photo Service, 3209 Madison Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27403, phone 336-292-5239. Ask Mrs. Ann Pepinp for the Grumman F8f?G58a, Gulfhawk IV phot-pak. It has 19 color photos.

Also check with Bob's Aircraft Documentation, 3114 Yukon Avenue, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, phone 714-979-8058 (www.bobsairdoc.com). Ask for photo-pak 3664/54. Ask Bob, but I think this is a photo-pak of Elmer's Gulfhawk.

Best regards,
Jerry

Wow Jerry, thanks! That's really hitting the nail on the head. I didn't know Elmer's was a 2 place, but I guess a lot of the restored war birds have a 2nd seat, or room to squeeze a second person. I'm going for the original, so it's Al Williams bird that I'll be documenting.

Thanks again!

Dave,

I mispelled Ann's last name. It is Pepino. Her late husband, Dr. Lyle F. Pepino, was one of the most respected plans designers of this hobby.
