Hello..Me and a friend of mine Dave are both building Jerry Bates
Bearcats and are looking for anyone w/ experience with this model. We are looking for weights of finished models, engine
choice and how each engine's performance was w/ the aircraft.

Thanks,

xanaphyst

Pretty smooth pal, That's a pretty subtle way to start a new thread .

While we're getting started, and not to bust into anyone else's thread, I'd like to find some of you who have used the electronic inner gear door sequencers. We'll be using Gene Barton's scale gear and the sequence is pretty easy... Inner doors stay down until the gear are up. I've used a pressure (air) valve to do this but not an electro style. Any comments?

I am also interested in finding scale wheels and comments on a scale 4 blade prop. Just interested in how those dudes do it at the big shows!

I'm sure there'll be more questions later. Maybe we can post a few pictures as these two come together.

Well. looks like this may be a place to keep my builders log and to give my pal some incentive to catch up on his bird, when he receives his wood kit.

Since this project is really a scratch build with the wood pieces virtually done I'm gonna build it like that. I found the first of 2 discrepencies with the terrific wood kit from Cornell Michaels. The F-6 former should be supplied in 2 pieces since the bottom is canted to accept the wing and the hardwood for the engine rails is twisted and warped. The former was split and the rails remade.

The Bates plans intend for this bird to be built on the "crutch". The formers for the fuselage are not all supplied split, so instead of sawing them all up, I built a fixture to hold the 1/4" crutch material in one plane, and have a way to fasten each former to the fixture.

This pix shows the general idea of each fixture upright. The building bench was laid out with each former location and the uprights are screwed to the bench. The top of the upright is removable so the fuselage can be removed once all the stringers are installed.

And here's all the formers in place with the top of each upright at the "crutch" location.

The firewall material is not in place at this time.

Now all I have to do is build it .

After searching the web, instead of building, I've come across these fine looking scale wheels by Glennis. There's even a scale tailwheel!

Man, I'm really gonna need to search for someone else's wheels and tires to use on this project. A pair of 4 1/2" wheels and tires from Glennis are $285.00! Plus they're not stocked and don't include the brake detail. These folks are pretty full of themselves.

What's anyone else using???

Dave,

Take a look at www.unitracts.co.uk. I think I am going to use their wheels on the AT-6 I expect to start next week. Bob Holman said he shipped the short kit today and I'm looking forward to receiving it. It's a Brian Taylor 94" deisgn.

I heard from Cornell Micheals today and he should start my Bearcat cutting next week.

How's your fuse coming along?

Walt, thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye open to see some, first hand. I picked up a pair of wheels that Jerry Bates recommmended (Williams Bros. 4 1/2" balloon type). They "look" right, but will need some detailing if something else doesn't really appear better.

After taking a week off to go to the EAA's Sun-N-Fun fly-in, for homebuilts, I'm back at the Bearcat, and my fullsize project.

The first order was modifying the #10 former for the retractable tailwheel. The 1st two pieces of 1/4" square balsa could be glued in place, locking all these formers in position.

Here's the stab support, V-1, and V-2 being installed. This sure locks up the aft end. The cockpit balsa and the ply that makes up the tank box is next.

Here's the last piece of the fixture added that holds the firewall at the required 4 1/2 degrees.

The modification to the #10 former and supports for the retractable tailwheel. It's a good thing that a larger tailwheel isn't needed. It would interfere with the bottom of #11. While not exactly scale to the Bearcat, this Robart #160 will do the job fine and does "look" correct.

Now it's a matter of adding all the rest of the stringers and...

The Bearcat scale wheels start out at 5 1/4" - if you want 4 1/2" they can be manufactured, but are more expensive as they have to be machined from billet material - they are not in stock as Bearcats in general are not popular subjects, and in 4 1/2" diameter they surely aren't.

Just to clarify.

Dennis, Just to clarify, I take offense to a vendor having to list his inventory on my thread. You need to carefully look at the rules of the forum and notice:
If you are a rep, manufacturer, distributor or retailer for any product you cannot solicit, offer, promote, or market this product in the discussion forums.
I have stewed over your reply on this thread instead of building my project. If I were allowed to flame you, I would have mentioned that members should visit your web site and pay attention to your FAQ.

Even after posting my own response to your product, I still considered them as an option. While this project is not on a budget, after having your remarks on my thread, I'd rather mount floats on it.

Just to clarify... I'm back to building and still looking for wheels.

Marc Vigod (who runs R/C Universe) assured me that I would be allowed to post when the information provided either: wasn't correct, or isn't portrayed accurately.

I did not so any of the following: solicit, offer, promote, or market this product in the discussion forums - I simply stated facts that pertained to the situation.

Your original post on the wheels painted the subject in a light that wasn't exactly clear to everyone else reading the thread.

Well...while i'm sure behind Dave a good bit i do have a little
done..Here is a picture of my jig under construction..while it
looks a bit stout..I'm trying to make it somewhat universal for later projects..Power looks like it will be a tartan twin and
scale articulating retacts from Gene Barton, Perry smoke pump,
and Robart handling the pneumatics. My Bearcat is going to
be Lyle Sheldons Rare Bear !!
