I started to build the He-162 from my own plans about two years ago and it has been quite an experience so far. It all started when one of my buddy brought an old Axiflow RK-049 kit at work and I offered to buy it since I had a couple of Tee Dee 0.051 at home to put in it. He wanted to build the fan so we agreed that he would build it with my Tee Dee engine an I would make an airframe for it. I started to look for a suitable aircraft design and found a 3 view drawing with a picture of the He-162 and decided that would be the perfect plane for our project ( I just love the strange look of the He-162 ). This was my first attempt at designing an r/c aircraft. The plans have been drawn using the following drawing as main reference.

My initial numbers where somewhat wrong and after having build most of the airframe I realized that my Heinkel was actualy too big and heavy for the weak glow-powered Axiflow fan. I've decided to convert to electric althought my buddy did a good job building the Axiflow fan. Initialy the plane was really going to be stand-off scale so the dimension are not exactly to scale. Wingspan has been increased a bit to improve flyability(Not looking for a speed demon here). Model is all build up with balsa and ply.

Some more photos of the build. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures but those were taken with a regular camera and then the prints have been scanned. I have now a good digital camera so future pictures should be better. Although it is a relatively small aircraft ( wingspan 43", lenght 44" ), the tail is all build up including the control surfaces. The rudders are functionnal although probably not required but it was a lot of fun to make...

Wings are fully sheeted and the fuselage is stripped with 1/8" balsa.

The inlet for the jet engine is made of 42 balsa profiles(1/4" sheeting) sanded with somewhat of a V to fit around the yellow cardboard template you can see on the first two pictures. All the control surfaces are built up and covered with 1/32" sheeting.

Here how it look right now except that I decided to retrofit the plane with retracts ( I should have thought about it earlier ). I am now trying to instal a set of mechanical Robart retract and it's a bit of a pain because I have to modify my somewhat complex control system for the four moving surface of the tail to make room for the gear in the fuselage. The wing is fixed and it make the task even more complicated but it should be not too bad. I will post pictures of the instalation as I will progress. I haven't done much work lately on the Heinkel as I have been busy lately installing a retractable nose gear and a speedbrake on a Long EZ 46 ARF. The Heinkel has been painted using dope but I will probably finish it with acrylic. I made a mold to vacuum form the canopy. In the pictures you can see on the lower right corner the mold and the shoe box under the plane was actualy my vacuum box...

I made some progress on the project. I am now testing the fan and I am ready to install it in the plane.

[:D] I LOve This plane too!!! , I've bought the same fan unit ready for the build.... But I've never got my head around to start the build. I got into gas plane first. :)

Wingspan is 43" Lenght 44" I made some work on that project since the last post. I modified the aircraft and installed retracts with working gear doors. I will post some pictures of the retract instalation later. The Heinkel is not yet ready to fly but it should be completed soon.

The retracts are Robart mechanical units. They are all operated by one servo including the bear doors.

Hi Alain, Nice job on the He 162. I'm finishing work on a Horten Ho 229. I'm using mini-fans. You too? Looks like it from the pictures, but can't tell for sure. Gary

Hi Gary The fan in my He-162 is a Haoye 3" fan with a KDA 28-47 15s Inrunner. It is a little bigger than the Wemotec Minifan and should produce more thrust when I will have the proper battery. I have tested on a bench my Minifan and the Haoye fan but my lipos don't have enough capacity to power the bigger fan. I'm still working on that project and hope to test fly it this summer. Do you have a building thread for the Horten? I would sure like to see it.

Lovely work on the Salamander. It's nice to see folks persuing orginal design options in this highly ARF world.
