I would like to buy the 12FG that would let me fly my PPM and PCM receivers along with 2.4 receivers. So my question is which 12FG would be easier and most cost effective to convert? If I buy the 12FG 2.4 I would have to buy a 72mhz synth module and a telescoping antennae to convert it, correct? If I buy the 12 FG 72mhz Synth version, I would have to buy the 2.4 module only, correct? Also, I thought I read somewhere that you can change the shift modes between positve and negatvive in PPM and PCM so that you coud use JR and Airtronics receivers. Is that true?
If so, how do you do it?

Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry,

The choice would be yours, either way you purchase this (as a 2.4GHz or a 72Mhz system) you are going to need to purchase the opposite module and receiver to convert this over.

If you already have 72Mhz receivers, you may want consider purchasing this as a 72Mhz system so that you will not have the need of purchasing multiple 2.4GHz receivers for your existing models. You can purchase just one 2.4GHz module/receiver set, use this while also being able to switch back to your existing 72Mhz models.

Yes, the current software version (1.2) in the 12FG will allow for shift select for use with JR and Airtronics receivers. This is simply done in the FREQ menu and the manual will walk you through this procedure.

Krysta,
I was under the impression that the 12FG 2.4Ghz radio due out in December had some differences internally but I guess I'm mistaken. What I can't understand is the pricing of the radios and maybe you can explain this to me. The 12FG 72Mhz and the 12 FG 2.4Ghz are the same exact radios except for which module you plug in the back and the type of antenna you have installed correct? If this is correct then why is the 12FG 2.4 version going to be $200.00 more than the 12FG 72Mhz radio that is available now when the Rx that comes with the 72Mhz verion costs $120.00 more than the Rx that comes with the 2.4Ghz version if bought seperately? Now I'm thinking that I should just buy the 72Mhz version and buy the 2.4 module when it comes out as I'll have both versions for the same price as the 2.4Ghz version minus a 2.4Ghz Rx. Is it just a supply and demand thing or am I missing something else? Thanks.

Marty

The transmitter module is more expensive. It has more components and has the required antenna.

Bill,
I just want to confirm that both 12FG versions are 100% identical except that the 72Mhz version has a conventional pull out antenna and the 2.4Ghz uses the antenna coming off the module. I'm asking mainly because I know if you buy a FASST module for say a 9C, you will still have some latency between the PPM transmission to the module and the signal transmission to the RX. If the 12FG versions are identical, I would be more apt to purchase the 72Mhz version now and know that when I buy the FASST module for it later next year, it would have all the advantages as if I bought the 12FG FASST version when it is available. I hope my question makes sense. Thanks.

Marty

We've said over and over....A Futaba 12FG FASST transmitter is identical to a 12FG on 72/50/whatever MHz, except it has the TM-14 module in it. No speed degradation exists when compared to PCM-G3.

The 9C experiences no more lag when a FASST module's installed than when you have a regular frequency module installed. Any latency is mostly in the processing before the signal goes to the module.

Sorry Bill, I was looking for a quick answer and didn't have the time at the moment to start searching through the threads which is what I usually do before asking questions. Thanks for responding. Guess I know what I want for the holidays .

Bill, early on (like a few months ago) seem to recall that the 12FG was to be available as a dedicated FASST system. At that time the picture on the 2.4gigahertz.com site showed a 12FG with an integrated 2.4Ghz antenna coming out of the swivel ball and a FASST logo right on the faceplate of the radio next to the display.

Was that scrapped? Did you guys decide to change that in order to accommodate more folks who wanted to use legacy modules?

Thanks,

nick

The 12FG was always intended to be a module system. Early pictures that showed an antenna at the top were early test versions of the transmitter during development of the FASST system.

With many Futaba systems, the type of module or receiver it comes with will determine the label. For example, the 9C system was labeled as a "9CAF" if it had an FM/PPM receiver, and a "9CAP" if it had an FM/PCM receiver. If the 2.4 GHz FASST module comes with the transmitter from the factory, then it may have the "FASST" label on it, otherwise, not.
