I just got a new body for my savage. it is the chevy ssr. I have never painted a body before so i have a few questions.

Do I cut the extra parts off before or after I paint it? How about the body mounting holes?

How do you mask of sections? do i use masking tape?

I am just probably going to do a two-tone black/orange and keep it rather simple. I might try to throw some silver (three-tone) in there but I don't want to make it to complicated.

To anyone that has any suggestions or can provide a picture with that fits my description, that would be much appreciated.

I use liquid masking and draw out my designs and I don`t cut anything until the paint has dried well and sealed it , but everyone has their own way .

I'm hoping to do it tomorrow. About how long does it take from start to finish? (masking to mounting the finished product)

That depends on the design and how slow or fast each person is .

Cut the body out first. Get yourself a set of lexan scissors and a body reamer - it makes life a lot easier. A dremmele tool with a sanding drum is very handy for a good finished look.
Position and cut mounting holes before painting - I do engine, fuel and air cutouts after painting but it's helpful to mark them out while the body is clear.
Clean and prep the body - this is VERY important
I use masking tape for designs - be sure to use good tape - as I've never been able to make the liquid mask work very well for me.
Paint darker colors first, several light coats rather than 1 heavy coat, let coats dry COMPLETELY before applying the next coat
Be very careful when removing masking and be SURE the paint is very dry before you even try.
When done, "back" everything with a few coats of white or silver to make the colors "pop"

The biggest/best tip I can give you is be PATIENT. Patience is your very best friend here.
The next best advice is to ask painting questions in the painting forum here on RCU. There's lots of help there.

Start (bag) to finish (mounting) usually takes two to three days for me.

Here's a pic of an SSR body I painted and put on my T-Maxx.

Thanks for the tips Dave. I think my biggest enemy will be patience. Your Tmaxx body looks good. I think for mine I am going to do black with an orange racing stripe with some silver trim on both sides of the strip and silver trim on other various parts.

Ok, I know I'm OT, but......a T-Maxx drift machine? Now I've seen everything.

Patience is hard, seriously hard!!!
But you'll get a much better result if you take your time and don't rush.

Your color ideas sound a lot like a Harley Ford body I did for a friend. It's on a F150 shell and I think it turned out pretty good.

Buzz, The T-Maxx with drift tires was a total hoot to drive. Unfortunatly it stripped the transmission pretty good so I don't do that much anymore. Not too long ago somebody in the HPI MT forum was talking about doing their Savage into a drifter too.

Here is some work I`ve done for my cars. I wish I had pics of my older cars as it puts these to shame but my point is possibilities are endless with liquid mask . I`ve done different tapes in the past and liquid mask just seems easier and faster for me anyway .

Thanks to all for the suggestions and tips. I painted the body today. I just used a simple layout. I used 3m painter's tape. Black, candy red, and silver. Here are a few shots. It's not perfect, but I'm pleased.

If all you want to do is practice take a two or three litre soda bottle, cut off the top and bottom then cut it in half lengthwise. You can clean it and practice technique, masking, fading, whatever w/o ruining a $30 body.

Looks real nice, Zud! I tend to go for simpler paint schemes where appropriate, because in my opinion, too much detail can distract from the lines of the body. I think your paint scheme complements the lines of the SSR body well.
