I have a pack of new nicads that were once charged but never used. The have been in a box for about 3 or 4 years. I heard that I should first try to discharge them and then recycle them about 5 times. I have a triton charger and will give that a try. I need to verify the correct discharge rate. This is a pack of 8 cells rated at 1700mah. They have cp-1700SCR on the side . I think they are considered a sub C battery made by Sanyo. I figure when I charge them I will do it at the .1c rate of 170ma. Can anyone tell me the best discharge rate? I know the cut off discharge voltage should be 7.2volts.

Thanks....franko

yeah, 7.2 to 8.0v for the discharge voltage. The packs may be toast though because of how long they've been sitting. You'll want to make sure they cycle really close to 1700mAh, if they are less than about 1400mAh on your test, it's probably best to just replace them.

It sounds like you've got a good base on all of the info. To get specs mfg's often to a c/10 to a c/15 discharge rate. It's best to compare them to your own eq, like a base test right when you get the packs. Basically on your discharge you probably want to go slower than a 1C discharge, and as slow as a c/10 discharge rate, and just see where your packs end up. Do this about 5 times like you already said, and the capacity should keep climbing. If it gets above 1400mAh, then you should be good to go, and if not, I would just replace them. Batteries are alot cheaper than a downed RC (unless it's a car, then just use the heck out of 'em until they are completely dead).

GL and frrel free to ask q's
