Where can I see color photos/drawings of US Aviators flight suit, from the belt up. In my "Knights of the Air" Time/Life book I have photos of the goggles and flying helmut from a musieum some where. What color was the jacket and what did the collar look like for a summer outfit.

The only pictures of pilots in "flying gear" in the 94th Aero Squadron book I have shows them wearing a bulky coverall, insulated I assume, kind of canvass looking, and wearing heavy mittens. I think the taylored leather jacket and silk scarf are adaptions of the film trade. On the history channel I have seen films of Von Richtofen putting on a heavy fleece lined coveral type suit that looked like leather and then requiring aid getting into the cockpit. My pilots have the movie look, so sue me. Happy landings. Doc

I would think there were winter and summer weight flight suits they wore. However, there doesn't seem to be much photos of American Aviators in flying attire. Probably because we entered the war so late.

Can I sue you for your model pilots being dressed like movie aviators? Or, maybe a better idea would be to sue movie aviators for looking like model aviator pilots, you know, deeper pockets and all!

You would definitely do better going after them than me, Blood out of a turnip and all. Yes the temperate weather out fit was a long leather coat, riding boots. The coat appeared to be quite heavy and the photos I have show a double breasted coat buttoned tightly to the neck. Temperate was the word used in the book, they never used the term warm or summer. Happy landings, Doc

I offered you a thingy and you didnt respond. Those pics look much like the photo in my Hat in The Ring Gang book of Wait Smythe about to mount his N 28 squadron no.4 N 6230. The photo is undated but it's probably in April or May 1918.

This is my second large scale airplane. The first was a 1/4th scale Bud Nosen Aeronca Champ, built in the mid 1980s, which weighed around 15 pounds and I flew with an O.S. 1.20 4 stroke. It wasn't over powered but was realistic as far as power is concerned. I want to go gas with this airplane. If the G-26 is a good middle of the pwer curve engine, that size is what I will go for.

Are you guys members of the IMAA? Do you see articles in their magazine on WW1 equipment?

It was a question Doc geezer: "Do you see articles in their magazine on WW1 equipment?" Not: Did you see the articles on WW1 equipment.

Mode , I was looking around and Googled WWI pilot photos and it took me to a header page where I clicked on WWI Pilot Stock pictures, they show Canadian, British , French, German and American pilots mostly in dress uniforms but some in flight suits. The Frence aviator iin photo #7 is wearing the very same gear Doug Campbell was wearing in my 94th book. Doc--- Oh! Oops I misunderstood your question

Back a little over three years ago when I started to shake the pieces of my 28 out of the box, there had been a series of articles by Chris Spangenberg in High Flight, where he and three of his flying pals built four 28s all at the same time. I communicated with Chris and found out the stories didnt get printed just as they should have so he sent me the text and pictures as they were supposed to be. It was Chris that encouraged me to do more than just build the kit. It was the first scale airplane that I finished and I was proud of myself and proud of the airplane. There are nine plaques hanging on the wall here in my shop that the 28 has won at big birds/warbirds and dawn patrol rallies. My favorite being a pilots choice award from a WWI dawn patrol rally. As far as specific WWI equipment advertised or articles specifically for WWI, not so much. The Information is out there and what's not available you gotta make. If you need inspiration reread some of the Pfalz thread where Seth described making the ball and socket fittings and flying wire attatchments for his DIIIa. Look at it as intruction not as something only he could do. Dont get me wrong, my 28 isn't near the airplane Seth's DIIIa is but it's mine and I did it and I'm doing more to the next one and I'll do more to the one after that. Let me get off this soap box OK. Happy landings, Doc

I have read Seth's build and agree with you, there is a lot of wonderful information there! I have built airplanes in the past, which were far more scale in their finish and detail then I expect my Neiuport 28 will be. Sometimes the mode strikes me to do more, sometimes I'm satisfied not doing so much. I don't compete, I don't even fly all than much anymore. However, I love building.

Actually my question on High Flight should have been: Is there good information in this magazine, or is it about assmbling ARFs, like the rest of the current assortment of R/C magazines are?

Mode, no the articles in Hi Flight aren't about ARFs but I don't remember seeing a lot of stuff on WWI. They don't do a lot of constructin coverage but I'm like you building is the really fun part of the hobby for me and I read about any construction article there is cause you never know when you'll come across that solution to the unsolvable problem that's been holding up a pet project. I used to get every model mag there was but now I'm down to the AMA mag, the IMAA mag RC Report and I still read Flying Models, the tiny stuff there just blows me away. I completely admire those guys that do those peanut scale models. You want to guess what happens when I try to build a model with little sticks and then cover it with tissue? Happy landings. Doc
